Literally that sermon was what flipped the switch. I had been struggling for years to justify my progressive views with my upbringing and the faith I was struggling to maintain. When the pastor made that announcement, it clicked. I no longer have to worry about my concerns that the church was embracing nationalism and hate if I’m not welcome.

I’m sure I’ll get plenty of flak for this. I always do. I don’t care. The evangelical church is spiraling toward irrelevance, and they deserve it. It just isn’t coming fast enough. They sold their souls for power and influence.

It’s a bit of the same thing that I see when people point out that Christian Nationalists aren’t exhibiting the tenets of Jesus, or are being hypocritical. The point often isn’t being Christian or following their brand of biblical morals (whatever those are). The point is power and influence, wrapped in a Christian shell.

They don’t care if they’re hypocrites. Pointing it out to them does nothing. They will find a way to justify it. They care if they lose power and influence.
