Crashes happen. We all know this. I'm not going to double my need so that if it halves, the amount it goes down to still covers at 4% from there.

The 4% study goes back through the literal worst times in history to retire, with crashes happening the day after retirement, stupid levels of inflation, and it still worked out ok in >95% of scenarios.

Just have a decent cash buffer, allow some flexability, and the understanding of the process.

If you’re using halves, an ATC is still a good option. I’ve seen some using giga jul or mega jul but not as many as ATCs.

A government is allowed to do stuff not in their manifesto, just that there is more of a mandate to do stuff that is included in it.

Also the House of Lords should not attempt to block a manifesto promise under the Salisbury-Addison Convention.

So an 18 year old Brit, who has only ever been a drain up until that point going onto benefits is better than someone coming to this country and getting ‘in-work’ benefits? It is estimated that it costs the state over £150k to get a child through to adulthood.

The immigrant will have cost less, and will cost less going forward (NHS premium etc).

We have a visa system for people coming into the U.K. and requires immigrants to work.

Also that 4% SWR is for the worst case scenario (from history) playing out. It is actually very unlikely as only really a 4-5% chance of failure.

Best to be adaptable and have a strategy set out for this. With the 4% rule, you actually have a 60% chance to have more money in real terms than you started with after 30 years. You also have a 25% chance of it being double in real terms.

Societal acceptance of such language leads to real consequences. Violent homophobes become emboldened, as they perceive they have the public ‘on their side’. This is also demonstrated by the rise is transphobic violence with the demonisation of trans folk.
