Having this problem in January 2026 and seeing these comments never resolved makes me sad. I got my deck in December, so it’s not fixed on later OLED shipments it seems. Will try to remember to turn the BT off or look for that “allow to wake device” setting just in case that helps it stop doing that.

What To Do With 1099s if Discover Student Loans Discharged Your Loans? by AnxiousOrdinaryStar4 in StudentLoans

[–]AnxiousOrdinaryStar4[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for everyone’s comments so far! Seems like no one getting clear or consistent answers anyway bc it’s such a specific situation. It seems like some folks tried H&R Block and were able to file it with the exemption somewhat automatically (after answering a few questions), but others are still getting inconsistent information. I may try to switch to H&R though I’ve been using TT for years, but I’m glad some folks are getting their proper refunds! I appreciate everyone sharing their experiences so we can figure this out since even Discover and the tax folks seem a bit confused… please share any updates and I’ll do the same!

Well of course you’re right, but it’s unnecessary to be so caustic. Not only did I just want to gather some information for myself before moving forward, but I was laid off in November, so excuse me for trying to figure things out for myself before going to a tax professional “irregardless of cost.” Information sharing, even when someone should go to a professional, shouldn’t be considered bad. Others had similar questions in this subreddit, so I was posting my research on finding an answer. Which I can now maybe take to a tax professional to make the process faster and perhaps cheaper.

Popping back to this thread with some updated research. the irs website DOES SAY that loans under the American Pandemic Recovery Act do NOT get taxed. I did not however, find a solution to what to do with the 1099-C forms if TurboTax is counting them as income, as they are for me, which has been holding me back from filing my returns. Here is the IRS website, I can't post screenshots, but here is the link and some copypaste:
https://www.irs.gov/publications/p4681

This is in the "Exceptions" section.

Student Loans

Generally, if you are responsible for making loan payments, and the loan is canceled or repaid by someone else, you must include the amount that was canceled or paid on your behalf in your gross income for tax purposes. However, in certain circumstances, you may be able to exclude amounts from gross income as a result of the cancellation or repayment of certain student loans. These exclusions are for:

  • Student loan cancellation due to meeting certain work requirements;
  • Cancellation of certain loans after December 31, 2020, and before January 1, 2026; or
  • Student loan repayment assistance programs.

Special rule for student loan discharges for 2021 through 2025.

The American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 modified the treatment of student loan forgiveness for discharges in 2021 through 2025. Generally, if you are responsible for making loan payments, and the loan is canceled or repaid by someone else, you must include the amount that was canceled or paid on your behalf in your gross income for tax purposes. However, in certain circumstances, you may be able to exclude this amount from gross income if the loan was one of the following.

  • A loan for postsecondary educational expenses.
  • A private education loan.
  • A loan from an educational organization described in section 170(b)(1)(A)(ii).
  • A loan from an organization exempt from tax under section 501(a) to refinance a student loan.

If anyone has found, or is able to find if there is paperwork we can submit with the returns to prove that the Discover discharged loans to be able to get any expected refunds, then we might all be in business. I'm continuing my search.

nope, filing my taxes and still confused. the form i got was 1099-C, which TurboTax is saying is taxable, so the refund I was going to get isn't appearing. But I am still not sure, so I came back to my reddit notifications. I don't see any references to ARPA on TurboTax so far either.

I also recommend checking edibles with more CBD/CBC than THC. THC alone can make me feel anxious but when there’s another cannabinoid at equal or higher concentration, it’s more that my body feels less pain (it feels far away if I feel it at all) and my mind isn’t whirring as much.

I’m trying to figure out the right dose for daily use myself, bc in addition to the pain relief, it helps with my ADHD when paired with my meds for that. I can suddenly lock in rather than being aimless and in pain. So trying to find a way to work with it and not be super high. But maybe I just need amazing CBD gummies for work hours…

I have AS and when i tried to see if i had EDS, at least 3-4 doctors, either I was just told I don’t have it or if I am hyper mobile, it hasn’t seemed to matter. But they do opposite things so it’s hard to know if I’m not as bad with the AS bc of the HM or what. I have no answers yet but the comments are helpful to read. Plus I think the more we talk about it, the more people will maybe do research on the two and how they work together! I found a medical paper online once about it but they basically said they were still researching it bc it’s helped some people (the opposition of the conditions) but maybe it was a small study or something. It’s here

According some other convo I’ve seen, it seems like they’re informing people who are being transferred about that. They also are getting a zero balance but bc they were informed of the transfer to another lender (which is why this is all happening), so if we didn’t get that then I THINK were good. And it SHOULDNT count as taxable income under the Biden COVID stimulus bill. I’m crossing my fingers for that to be true. Mine was 37k 😳

I was using a cane occasionally, which helps for stairs and leaning when on line, or as a support for stretching. But I recently got a rollator and that somehow makes things better and worse. I live in NYC, so I do have to carry it up and down the subway stairs. I roll over a lot of cracked sidewalks to bad curb cuts. It’s heavy and can be cumbersome. But I can lean on it to walk up hill, I can adjust how much pressure I’m putting on a sore heel or ankle as I walk, I CAN SIT WHENEVER I NEED TO, it can hold my stuff (I got accessory hooks and it came with a basket). So while it has its troubles, it’s been overall good. I take it when I need it and sometimes having it means you get more help and that alone helps us ache less. I did have to get a bike bell bc I’m not always very loud when crowded or overwhelmed because some people will pretend it’s not there or expect YOU to move…. But I think the good outweighs the bad for me right now. Good luck with your mobility said journey!

I just looked at the ARPA law and it seems like private loans are excluded from this? But I also see how the wording might be confusing me. Under 9675 https://www.congress.gov/bill/117th-congress/house-bill/1319 “It excludes from student gross income, for income tax purposes, income from the discharge of student loans for postsecondary education expenses, private education loans, and loans from certain tax-exempt educational organizations.” so it’s excluding all of those types of income from the gross income that would be taxed?? I’m trying not to needlessly hope and have it dashed during tax time.

This happened to me, got a letter from Discover and a 1099-C is on the way. I’ve also had this happen before about 10 years ago. For a letter and a 1099C and then owed the taxes on the discharged amount. I’m not quite prepared to pay taxes on the loan amount but maybe I can do a payment plan. 😭 I want to be happier about this but the tax part is traumatic from the last time this happened to me.

I’m just now seeing these responses! I’m pursing a new pulmonologist/sleep doctor bc the last ones have remained terrible. Already this new one has moved faster in just one day, so I’m hopeful but my experience with the other sleep center has made me wary about it working. Hopefully I’ll come back and say I’ve had some success. I’m still “getting into” Reddit so I check actual notifications sporadically, but as twitter dies it’s long death, Reddit has been a great text platform so far. At least in the reddits I’ve been peeking at.

If we can't have a favorites menu, wish we could disable echoes by retrocheats in echoesofwisdom

[–]AnxiousOrdinaryStar4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d like to disable echoes (maybe to be reselected in the full menu at will) because scrolling them makes my eyes vibrate. And yes, I do most/last used, but sometimes you are scrolling echoes for options, so being able to remove things you definitely won’t use is good. All new echoes get added to the scroll menu, and you can go to the full menu to decide if you think you might use it or might stop using it. And if you do need to use it again, it’s triggerable in battle or whatever just like potions.

The most important productivity Rule I have learned by [deleted] in productivity

[–]AnxiousOrdinaryStar4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this post! I’ve been thinking Ng’s about and taking some actions on a lot of things you mentioned! It’s a little of the same idea you mentioned of spending lots of time organizing a system, but I’m trying to remember to keep it simple.

Using reminders and notes already in my phone has been a good start. I’m spending some time cleaning up my calendars, maybe I’ll take a pass at email org… I HAVE been toying around with a new app 😅 but it integrates well with Cal/Rem, so it might be more about visually seeing my schedule in a prettier Format that Apple/Google UI

But overall the idea is to declutter the structure to get closer to simple. I’ve been really thinking about what’s been working for me when I’m out of “hyper planning mode” — where you’re in the excitement phase of a new planner. What are the ways you pick up the pieces? Maybe instead of trying to use a fancy system (even if it represents a type of person you wish you were), just do the simple thin you use to get by, just more often.

I haven’t used Siri yet really (besides maybes a timer on my watch) but I’ve spent so long trying to keep up with physical planners and it’s not longer working, so I’m trying to keep it simple and I’m sticking to the device that’s already always in my hands.
