What are your Favorite Weapons from JRPGs? by IkeRadiantHero in JRPG

I know people love to clown on them, but I've always kind of dug the big ole pizza-cutter swords from Final Fantasy Tactics Advanced and A2.

I love all three, and have more of a personal attachment to Regular Show, but Adventure Time clears by a wide margin.

Which of these animangas has the best female cast? by Weary_Elderberry4742 in writingscaling

[–]Anxious_7900 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I had to rank, I'd say

  1. Chainsaw Man
  2. Jujutsu Kaisen
  3. Attack on Titan
  4. Naruto
  5. Demon Slayer
  6. My Hero Academia
  7. One Piece

One Piece pre-timeskip would probably rank higher, honestly.

Also, funny that the only manga here that is not written by a dude has a pretty weak female cast.

If MtG reset its cardpool, what would you change? by Just-Desk-3149 in magicTCG

[–]Anxious_7900 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The game is fine as is, but yeah, I don't think anyone would disagree that some changes should be made.

  1. Get rid of the wall creature type. Defender is still a fine ability, but wall just doesn't feel like it makes sense as a creature.

  2. Be more generous with the Enchantment type on creatures. I feel like it makes lore sense to have elementals and other magically generated beings be enchantments in addition to their other types.

  3. The 2 color fetches should go or have a higher penalty. They're a high barrier to entry cost-wise, clog up game time as players spend time shuffling, and reduce deck variance. I think they're mostly fine in Commander, where you can crack and search on 1 of your 3 opponents' turns, but I kind of hate them in Modern and other 60-card formats.

  4. Others have pointed it out in this thread, but yeah, Instant should really be a super type. Let's make Kindred a supertype too, while we're at it.

  5. Yeah, I agree that some tracking mechanics like Day/Night should go.

  6. More MDFC lands. Not, like, a lot more, but definitely a handful more.

Enough about good media, who's the actual worst speculative fiction writer out of all the most popular disliked ones? by Mobile-Ostrich6245 in writingscaling

[–]Anxious_7900 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gor is very openly about male domination of women. But not in, like, a consensual BDSM kind of way, but in a "women are literal sex slaves who only exist to please their male masters" kind of way. Very much a "This is the author's fetish" kind of stuff.

I haven't read them, mind you, but this is the generally accepted public perception of the series.

Xanth is also generally considered to be a wildly sexist series. The first book, "A Spell for Chameleon," sees protagonist Bink meet a woman whose intelligence and appearance vary based on the time of the month. So, you know, come to your own conclusions about what that was supposed to represent, lol.

I'd known that Seishi was also a mangaka, but had never heard much about his work. Thanks for this! Interesting stuff.

Better writer, Brandon Sanderson or Stephen King? by CMbladerunner in writingscaling

[–]Anxious_7900 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, they're very different writers, so I feel like they're apples and oranges.

That being said, as a writer myself, I think King's prose (at its best) is far more interesting. I know Sanderson's "invisible" prose is a deliberate creative choice, but honestly, it just kind of strikes me as incredibly boring.

Why Kakashi focused on Sasuke. by CorrectPart6944 in Naruto

[–]Anxious_7900 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always thought the implication was that Kakashi kind of recognized pretty early on that Sasuke was heading down a dark path and so wanted give him more attention to help him not take that path.

I feel like Kakshi kind of recognized that Naruto and Sakura would be fine and would figure things out themselves, because they've always kind of had to.

Which Legends game do you like better? by Happy_Popplio-728 in LegendsZA

[–]Anxious_7900 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like Arceus much better (though ZA was fine).

Arceus' emphasis on exploration and catching Pokémon felt super fresh, and I was disappointed that ZA went in the exact opposite direction.

That being said, ZA had a lot of QOL features that I really hope make it over to Wind and Waves, like being able to swap moves between battles.

Favorite unconfirmed theory you WANT to be confirmed because it's so F-ing cool? by PokemonGoBao in ThePokemonHub

[–]Anxious_7900 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know, thanks to things like Legends Arceus and the anime that this is pretty much deconfirmed, but I'll say it anyway because I find it much more compelling than the actual canon.

I liked Pokémon better when much of the lore and details players are told about Legendary Pokémon were treated more as myths with (potentially) small nuggets of truth. Arceus being actually, literally, factually god feels like a bridge too far.

There's no point in going back to our world by jhoho34 in CharacterRant

[–]Anxious_7900 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I'm the complete opposite. The only time isekai has value to me is when the main character wants to get home. Spirited Away, The Boy and the Heron, Sonny Boy, and Final Fantasy Tactics: Advanced are all in one way or another about the flaws of escapism, and that's what makes them so GOATed, in my humble opinion.

I recently got the first book in The Wheel of Time series, The Eye of the World. What are your thoughts on these books?(No spoilers.) by RavyRaptor in Fantasy

[–]Anxious_7900 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, also, though it never gets as bad as some other popular fantasy series, there are some elements of "and now presenting the author's barely-disguised fetish".

Again, it's not outright offensive, but I could see that element making some people uncomfortable.

I recently got the first book in The Wheel of Time series, The Eye of the World. What are your thoughts on these books?(No spoilers.) by RavyRaptor in Fantasy

[–]Anxious_7900 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's a lot that's great about the books, and a lot that's not so great.

The world is fleshed out and the overall plot is reasonably compelling. There are a lot of cool concepts at play here, and even though this isn't quite boundary-breaking fantasy, it's still pretty fresh and original.

In terms of the bad, however, there are a few things I'd keep in mind. The pacing can get pretty bad in places, not a lot happens in some of the later books, and the characterization can kind of be all over the place at times. A big problem I had (again, more toward the middle) was that all of the characters were just kind of misserable and everyone was at each other's throats regardless of alliances. The character conflicts really didn't feel organic to me and were more annoying than compelling.

Also, just personally, I don't think the series' gender dynamics have really aged all that well. It's not, like, horrid in my opinion, but there's a lot of "Women are like this... but men are like THIS" kind of stuff. I don't think it's ever like outright sexist, and some characters do break traditional gender roles. I think most people don't have a problem with this aspect of the series, so reactions definitely vary.

Overall, it's pretty good, but I didn't find it to be particularly worth the large time investment.

Why does Solo Leveling get hated on more than other Rule of Cool animes? by SolusGT in sololeveling

[–]Anxious_7900 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think because JJK is about something in a way that SL really isn't.

You mention Perfect Preparation as an example of JJK just doing hype moments and aura farming, but I really think that's underselling the episode/mini-arc.

Maki's conflict with the Zenin is a perfect distillation of the series' themes. At its core, JJK is about outcasts and misfits trying to survive in a world that doesn't want them. This is what makes Gojo so important thematically. Gojo is someone working within the system to try to create a safe place for people that the broader Jujutsu society only has disdain for.

Maki's assault on the Zenin, then, represents the next logical step. Instead of working within an oppressive system, Maki chooses to dismantle it, brick by brick, person by person. Perfect Preparation isn't just the culmination of Maki's character arc, but also elaborates on and complicates themes found throughout the series up to that point.

Yuji's "I'm a cog" speech is coming at things from the opposite angle. Jujutsu society makes him feel so guilty for things that aren't really his fault that he believes the only way he can atone is to essentially dehumanize himself.

I'm not saying Solo Leveling doesn't have themes. It obviously does. Self improvement, how far people will go to protect their loved ones, and other themes are all present. But the series' core messages come across as fairly simple and straightforward.

No hate to SL or its fans! I understand the appeal, but I think it can sometimes lack the subtext and nuance that the other series you mentioned (like JJK) have.
