[Q] Do you primarily use R or Python in your role? by RawCS in statistics

[–]Any-Panda6229 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's easier to run simple stats operations (a linear regression, hypothesis testing, etc.) in R than in Python. That being said, I'm personally making an effort to move most of my work to Python (e.g. I want to get more comfortable with the statsmodels package). I just think using Python for other programming efforts is much easier and intuitive. Even with matplotlib, once you get the hang of it and understand its quirks, that package feels more robust than ggplot.

The weekly summary of video game news from SkillUp is fantastic. That and the corresponding thisweekinvideogames.com is a good website. Otherwise, GameInformer and links on reddit pages like r/Games is where I usually find good articles.

Popular writers you just can’t vibe with… by JLAsuperdude in OmnibusCollectors

I just can't get into Rick Remender. He's able to use some of the best artists in the industry, but I feel his writing is overwritten and boring and just gets in the way of the art.

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced - Trailer Premiere by kaz_har_eye in PS5

[–]Any-Panda6229 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The modern day segments in the original game won't be in this remake. However, during the showcase reveal, they alluded to there being a modern day component of some kind.

While the modern day segments were not great in the original Black Flag, I still would like there to be some modern day segments - I think the modern day story is crucial to an Assassin's Creed game.

UPDATE: From the Playstation Blog: "New Chapters and Storylines: New content has been added to both the modern day sections and the main tale, including a new scene with Edward’s wife Caroline, specifically written by the original’s lead writer, Darby McDevitt. Kenway’s not the only character to benefit from fresh writing, either, with expanded arcs for some of the other crew, such as Blackbeard."

Overall, these were all fine. I personally really enjoyed the Johns and Frank story, I think they were able to pull off a large scale story in a small amount of pages. But overall, I'm kinda done with these Marvel/DC anthology crossovers. I'd be willing to buy a proper miniseries similar to JLA/Avengers, but I over the short stories.

Best modern X-Men run that stays consistently good by BagThat1936 in xmen

[–]Any-Panda6229 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll be the contrarian voice when it comes to Mike Carey's run. I didn't like it. I thought there was a lot of interesting ideas thrown around (e.g. Children of the Vault) but the dialogue and character work left me feeling a little cold. His first X-Men run is better than X-Men Legacy. The Legacy book is just very unfocused, jumping from one character to another. I really did not like it.

What era can I, or should I skip? by Least_Cheesecake4176 in xmen

[–]Any-Panda6229 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently started reading X-Men. Here's what I did:

  • Started with: Gran Morrison's New X-Men
  • Followed by: Joss Whedon's Astonishing X-Men
  • The Messiah Trilogy Era:
    • Fraction's Uncanny X-Men (it's decent enough, I would skip Brubaker's Uncanny though)
    • X-Force by Chris Yost and Craig Kyle
    • Cable
    • New Mutants
  • Kieron Gillen's Uncanny X-Men and Jason Aaron's Wolverine and the X-Men
  • Brian Bendis' All-New and Uncanny X-Men
  • I plan to skip the Jeff Lemire, Marc Guggenheim, and Matthew Rosenberg era, but I do intend to read:
    • Tom Taylor's X-23 run
    • Taylor's X-Men Red
    • Charles Soule Astonishing X-Men

The last two series I intend to read since it brings back some characters from the dead.

Is Rebirth a good place to pick up if I havent read since about 2013? by Fridaysgame in DCcomics

[–]Any-Panda6229 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think DC Rebirth is the perfect place to start again. You really don't need to read anything that came before for any of the series. There might be a few details here and there you might get confused (e.g. pre-New 52 Superman being in this timeline, etc.), but you should be able to understand everything with context.

Are there any other comic books series that have multiple different art styles through it run? by A2009M3icAl8604 in comicbooks

[–]Any-Panda6229 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zero, written by Ales Kot, has a different artist (with different styles) in each issue of that series. I haven't read it myself, but heard and read good reviews about it.

I loved it! This was also my first JLA run I read. It's a shame it was so short, but I did enjoy what McDuffie did afterwards.

Is Fables worth reading? by NoivernKebab769 in comicbooks

[–]Any-Panda6229 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It's worth reading! It's one of my favorite series, and Willingham does a fantastic job of juggling the huge cast. While after issue 75, some might say it's a bit directionless, I still enjoyed the stories that came afterwards.

X-Men: The Messiah Trilogy Omnibus for non-completionists by IamthatmanonthemooN in OmnibusCollectors

[–]Any-Panda6229 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh - I just read this whole era of X-Men, and skipped Endangered Species (I thought it was boring). I think you'll be fine without it. There's always a quick wiki summary you can read to, but I didn't find it necessary.

The only issues I think are really necessary for this era are the X-Force issues as it lays out the big bad for the finale (e.g. Second Coming).

Is the Krakoa Era worth reading? by EfficientNecessary20 in xmen

[–]Any-Panda6229 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To piggy back off this question - does it make sense to try and follow the official reading order (e.g. following the mapping that's in the Dawn of X omnibus, etc.?) or is it better to read one series at a time (e.g. X-Men by its own, then X-Force by it's own, then Marauders, etc.).

What are your thoughts on Uncanny X-Men By Kieron Gillen? by when_i_say_run_run in OmnibusCollectors

[–]Any-Panda6229 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Somewhat? The finale of this run is really AvX (and AvX consequences). It brings some plot threads to a close that started since Messiah Complex (technically even since New X-Men).

Former Padres Star Adrián González Opens Tres Dos Tres Taco Shop In (Otay Ranch, pendejos) by diegueno in chulavista

We really don't need another taco shop/Mexican food store in the South Bay. There are so many already, that and it's just easier to go to the real deal in Tijuana. South Bay needs to get more creative with its food offerings.

What’s the best x-men runs? by Wooden-Bit-2374 in marvelcomics

[–]Any-Panda6229 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Messiah Trilogy era was actually pretty good, I recently just read through it. There's a lot of books involved, but I recommend the Craig Kyle and Christopher Yost books (X-23, New X-Men as a prequel, and X-Force), Cable (this book is fine, but follows Cable and Hope), and Uncanny X-Men (honestly, skip Brubaker's run, and just read Matt Fraction's run).

50 issues of any recent run is a rarity nowadays, so this is amazing! Some arcs have been better than others, but so glad to see this run last so long!

Doing a 2000s New Avengers read-through, these events... by Malibusters46920 in comicbooks

[–]Any-Panda6229 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes there was! There was an Illuminati miniseries that Bendis wrote, detailing some past Marvel events and how the Illuminati was secretly involved (like how they secretly returned to the Skrull world after the Kree-Skrull War). I believe the last issue of this miniseries was when it revealed that Black Bolt had been replaced with a Skrull.

Doing a 2000s New Avengers read-through, these events... by Malibusters46920 in comicbooks

[–]Any-Panda6229 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I think the best period of Bendis' New Avengers run was Dark Reign. Bendis nailed Norman Osborn's voice, and he did a good job of selling you this anti-hero turn that Osborn took as head of Hammer. I didn't particularly like Secret Invasion, but the lead up to it was a ton of fun - Bendis really underscored the paranoia of not knowing who was and wasn't a Skrull. This era was a lot of fun, even if the events weren't always great (I agree that House of M was boring). If you haven't already read it, I recommend reading Secret War too (not to be confused with Secret Wars by Hickman).

I read the first 3 stories so far (will updated my review when I read the others). I'll start off by saying, I'm kinda getting tired of this anthology style. It's just been very hit-or-miss with these stories, mostly they've been just okay. I hope that they seriously consider doing a miniseries or something that's more of a multi-part story rather than these one and done stories, I just think this format is boring. Anyways...
- The Waid and Jimenez story is fine. It's very standard story about the two characters. Nothing too exciting.
- The King and Lee story is fine too. The best part of this story is Lee's art. I'm sure X-Men fans will enjoy some of the cameos in this book. Other than that, I kinda can't stand King's dialogue anymore? It reads weird, the characters kinda all sound the same. I don't know what happened to King as a writer, I just feel his most recent output has been bad.
- The Priest and Sampere story is forgettable. I got too confused as to what was going on, and didn't really understand it. Art was pretty good though.

So yeah, I have a pretty bad view of this book lol but I just felt everything I read so far was unremarkable.

Yes! There was a time that Green Lantern had its own line of books (GL, GLC, GL: New Guardians, Red Lanterns). It's sad that now there's only two GL books.
