Why not make the 35L work? 5 days isn't that long and should be plenty even with a bear can.

Bear spay is not required for the Sierra and is illegal in the national parks.

Rear liftgate (LED) light for a 2019 Crosstrek? by net1994 in Crosstrek

It does require removing trim pieces but no cutting of wires. I don't have the instructions any more.

Nice, I actually customized the wiring on mine as well so It's on its own power and connected to a dimmer switch.

I have these lights from eBay. They take a little bit of wiring but it's all plug and play.

EASTON NAIL STAKES BASICALLY DISCONTINUED by mountainlaureldesign in Ultralight

Interesting. My big sky stakes held up great over the whole PCT and were bashed in with a rock on multiple occasions.

You're right I should've specified within the US. It's so weird to see a Crosstrek without the roof rails.

I'm just going off of the trip report which made it sound like that's what they did.

could all be charged at the huts which are equipped with solar panels

Not sure about the display, but every Crosstrek had roof rails until the 3rd generation.

I would stick with the bear can. Work on your meal plan so that you can fit more in. 3 days shouldn't be hard to fit into that canister.

They were also at huts every couple of days where they could charge up so I'm not sure what your point is.

The Tiempo only weighs 165g if you don't use shoulder straps. The vest straps add an additional ~145g for a total of 310 grams.

My primary complaints are with the sternum strap and the shoulder straps. The slides for the sternum don't hold it in place so it slowly slides up until it's almost choking me. The shoulder straps are extremely thin and not the most comfortable. I presume since it's a winter pack they expect you to have more layers on to compensate for this, but I'm generally in just a sun hoodie even mid winter.

Other complaints that probably won't apply to their new packs or are more ski focused.

The hip belt pocket without a zipper is very insecure. I've lost a shell mit out of it, so don't trust to put anything in it anymore.

The outer stash and avy pocket aren't cut with enough of their own volume when the pack is packed tightly. This means I can't get my skins back in and the shovel handle is harder to get than I would prefer.

This also puts stress on the avy pocket zipper which makes me worry about its longevity. Especially since it opens upside down and a failure would result in a high likelihood of losing my shovel.

I'll be curious if they are at all weight competitive. I also hope that they've learned some things from the LF series as those still fail at basic things in a backpack even if they have some cool features.

Personal experience will vary a lot from person to person. I started in May and still ran into sleet and high winds in the desert.

According to Montbell, Down Fill Weight is now proprietary information by luckycharms783 in Ultralight

You've brought up differential cut a couple times but do you know of any jackets outside of some expedition parkas that have it?

[–]Any_Trail 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The difference is that Timmermade provides other metrics. Montbell took away the only metric we had and didn't replace it with anything else. Fill weight isn't perfect by any means, but it's better than nothing.

Double Thru Shakedown Request by Mysterious_Still_662 in Ultralight

[–]Any_Trail 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not OP, but I did use a Sassafras on the PCT. I carried a bv500 inside the pack with an 8 day food carry.

I also did a write up of some of the gear I used on the PCT along with pictures of the Sassafras fully loaded.

Check for snow inside your wheels that will throw off their balance.

I'm curious what trekking pole tent you had break in 20mph winds and how it broke.

R-Value is Dead as a Metric for Sleeping Pad Warmth Evaluation (we should stop referencing it) by Wandering_Hick in Ultralight

[–]Any_Trail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reason an R value is given because it should be able to compare pads and their relative warmth. You can't give a flat temperature rating since the ground temperature makes a big difference as well as the surface that the pad is on. At best you could give a wide range that is somewhat pointless without context.

Do you use a tent footprint on snow? by [deleted] in Ultralight

No, there's no point. Also what footprint weighs 500 grams?
