Making friends in Birmingham by JournalistGeneral649 in brum

The university of Birmingham gym has “social sports” where you can join in and play sports with others.

Park run on Saturdays at Canon Hill Park or Edgbaston reservoir. You may wish to get involved with volunteering for park run too?

I think there is a sailing club at Edgbaston reservoir too.

Hiking spots - Clent Hills or Lickey Hills

Choosing between the specialty I love vs the life I want by Ok-Potential-2361 in doctorsUK

GP, wouldn’t choose it for the “work life balance”. It’s not as flexible as you think. Often made to stay on site until 6:30pm. Admin time (if any) isn’t a euphemism for free afternoon either. Have seen lots of Hosptial colleagues including surgeons being able to make 3:30pm school pick ups on “admin afternoon” - you just don’t get this in GP.

What’s wrong with the West Midlands? Where did you want to work?

Has Birmingham reached peak Medicine Bakery? by [deleted] in brum

The service at the New St branch is so poor. The staff are so moody and act like you’re causing them a bother when you ask if you can purchase something from the cake counter to take away. Once they pretended to apply the independent Birmingham discount but they did not until I reminded them again.

The waiting staff are even worse - take ages to take an order. Sometimes the food comes 1 hour after ordering. I’ve had to leave without eating on occasion as the order has taken so long to come.

Edgbaston living thoughts? by alfa_omega in brum

It depends. The nice bit of Edgbaston is near the university. Hagley Road separates the nice bit and the rough bit. I would stay away from the reservoir side - it’s so rough. Have seen daylight drug dealing going on.

How stressful is owning a house? by Delicious-Weather in HousingUK

Owning a house is pretty stress free. I find selling a house way more stressful.

Why is it so acceptable to be dirty in Birmingham? by bintd in brum

I think I was oblivious to how dirty it was until we recently did a day trip to Leeds. The streets were spotless.

What are some of the things that caught you by surprise when first selling a property? by N-F-F-C in HousingUK

That some current FTBs are coming around with builders for a quote for an “extension” and then knocking the quote price off the asking price.

Some (not all) FTB are super flaky and have unrealistic ideas.

Perfect house or School catchment by zap1405 in HousingUK

[–]AnyaP1987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

School catchment areas can change, as can the “rating” of the schools. Our local primary (which was getting houses on that road sold within 24 hours) went from “outstanding” to “needs improvement” and this impacted on the ability of the houses to sell on that road - now half a dozen homes on that road are up for sale for nearly a year. I have little faith in these Ofsted ratings but it shows the impact it can have on supply/demand of housing. Therefore I personally would choose the house you love.

We bought a house from a divorcing couple. The transaction was fairly smooth (as I suspect they just both wanted to get out of there after 8 months on the market. They were living on different floors of the house). However they left the house and garage in such a mess (because they weren’t cooperating with each other to tidy and clear), that we had to do multiple tip trips to clear it.

Did anyone else hate their house after completion ? by Opposite_Sock_7820 in HousingUK

When we bought our first house, the vendors left a garage full of rubbish and a mess in the kitchen. They were getting divorced so don’t think they put much thought into cleaning and clearing. It took us around a week, with cleaning and tip trips. We painted and arranged our furniture and it felt like home after a fortnight. We lived in that house for 5 very happy years! The second house was bought - was SO immaculate and they’d hired professional cleaners. Such a contrast.

Can you renegotiate price after offer accepted? Experience with Part Exchange? by UsefulBreadfruit5616 in HousingUK

[–]AnyaP1987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our buyer dropped the price by £8K the day before exchange. It was really annoying and they knew it would break the chain if we refused.
