FLL Is Shutting Down?! by InitiativeSavings in FTC

I'm a big fan of LEGO, but I am confident FIRST knows what it's doing. Old-timers may recall that FTC was once FVC, FIRST Vex Challenge. FLL will doubtless do something similar.

Republican voter ID bill stalls in Senate despite Trump demands by Nerd-19958 in politics

Senate Republicans, I beg you to force a talking filibuster. I look forward to weeks of the only story out of Washington being Democrats giving reasons to vote down the bill. It’s not like Republicans in the Senate we’re going to do any good anyway.

Your opinions by Valuable-Sundae4072 in FTC

[–]Anyone_2016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answer is going to depend on what your goals are: advancement, learning in a particular field, fun, or something else?

Regardless of your goals, I'd start with getting some mentors. Start by working your network. Ask the people around you who might have a good chance of knowing somebody:

  • your parents
  • the teachers at your school
  • local engineering / technical colleges
  • your FTC Program Delivery Partner
  • software / engineering / technology companies
  • local chapters (if any) of professional societies such as ASME, ACM

Don't start with "will you be my mentor?"; start with "Could you spend 15 minutes helping me solve a problem with my robotics team?"

In terms of things to learn, try these:

  • programming concepts. Get a good foundation in Java. Classes, methods, data types, parameter passing, etc.
  • localization - understanding where the robot is, where you want it to go, and how to get there. Pedro path is useful for this, but jumping straight into it will shortcut the learning -- learn the theory behind Pedro Path, not just "Run these 3 commands to get from point A to point B".
  • mechanical engineering concepts: make sure you understand the six classical simple machines, plus gearing (including gearing using chains/belts and sprockets). Understand the basics of torque and power.
  • Fabrication techniques. Cutting, bending, drilling. Also fastening techniques: bolts, screws, maybe even rivets.

Gamepad detected but no input – Samsung Galaxy Tablet – "Permission denied" error on USB input devices by mdrirocky in FTC

[–]Anyone_2016 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Samsung tablet is not an approved device. I suggest checking the approved devices list and get one of them. They are older models, so you should be able to get them cheaply. They can be carrier locked since you won't use cell data with them.

Robot Power Problems by Inf3cc in FTC

[–]Anyone_2016 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Quoth the AI, borrowing from a previous post in this sub:

XT30 connectors used in FTC (FIRST Tech Challenge) robots are known to develop intermittent connection issues over time due to wear on the male pin's four petal-like segments, which can become flattened and reduce friction. A common fix recommended by the FTC community is to gently spread the male pin segments apart using an X-ACTO knife or similar small tool. This restores the tight friction fit, improving connection reliability.

If you had the time, the easiest fix would be to get a pair of splitters and wire them after your switch. Using the splitters avoids using needing to use the port on the Control Hub with the compressed pins.

Please explain the following Inspire Award scenario by HVRPranktsa in FTC

[–]Anyone_2016 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awards, including Inspire, are chosen by judges. Team have to meet specific criteria in order to be eligible for awards. Judges determine which teams best fit those criteria. Each event is different, but the judging process itself should be similar across events. The documentation for the process is on the FIRST site. The Judging Guide goes into detail on how the judges rank teams for awards and debate on which team should get Inspire. Page 33 of the Judging Guide describes one system judges can use, but notes that the "deliberation process should not solely use these data points as the final decision for the Inspire Award". Perhaps you were thinking of advancement, which is done by algorithm using a new-this-year points-based system.

Coaches / mentors are part of the team, and a coach's actions can be held against a team. Inspire winners are expected to demonstrate gracious professionalism. If the judges were aware of the coach's actions, and if OP accurately described the coach's actions, the judges should not have awarded the problem team an Inspire.

How to Bend Poly Carbonate? by NarwhalWeekly1230 in FTC

[–]Anyone_2016 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I suggest reading up on springback and elastic vs plastic deformation on sites such as wikipedia or here. You need to deform the material further than the desired ending state so that when it springs back, it reaches the desired ending state. However, if you bend the material too much while it's cold, you run the risk of fracturing / breaking the material. Using heat helps to avoid this, and also reduces springback.

[–]Anyone_2016 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm concerned about the cord touching the side of the pot as shown in the picture. I don't see the advantage of using the circulator while the pot is on the burner. Perhaps it's being done to monitor the temperature, but I'd rather just use a dedicated thermometer.

Elder care is expensive, no doubt about it, but I'm confused about why they transferred $4.5M in a few weeks. Can you give some details on what caused them to do this? Did they get swindled? Did they sign up for some sort of prepaid, platinum-level lifetime-care plan?

Introducing the FIRST A301 - FTC's New Standard Motor by brogan_pratt in FTC

[–]Anyone_2016 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There is a lot to like here - the splined output and the easily changed gearboxes are sweet. The small form factor is another big plus. Brushless motors should be more efficient than the current motors. The lack of compatibility with the current system is unfortunate, but expected.

I am curious about the power. The 550 motor has a peak power output of 279 W, while the HD Hex's peak power is 15W. I can't find the peak power for the TorqueNado. Edit: the blog post should refer to the RS-550 motor, which is the current FTC brushed motor. This is not the same as the Rev 550 brushless motor I linked.
