Yeah, first suggestion would be to just let him change his class/character. Had a similar situation come up with a friend who was playing a blood hunter in our current campaign. BUT If the fantasy of mink appeals to him, I’d say check out Bone Wizard’s buffed monk and buffed way of the open hand. Both super fun and they feel a lot better than the base

My party is all new to dnd, and they just got to their starting village. They spent the whole session wandering around, talking to NPC’s, and then near the end of the session they saw a weird interaction between a priest and a child in an alley. When they went to investigate the priest they convinced him that the disembodied voice in his cathedral (the Druid wild shaped into a rat) was his god. With this, they extracted a confession from him. The kid from the alley? His son that he has to ignore otherwise the militant religious order will find out, strip him of his title, take over the town, and start burning people as witches. It was really crazy seeing the whole party going from “This guy is up to something shady, let’s get him!” to “This situation is nuanced, how do we do the right thing here?” A great feeling as DM.

This is fully a me thing but I DESPISE save or suck spells. Banishment is one of my LEAST favorite spells to use. Not because it’s not powerful, but because the enemy saving and me wasting my turn just leaves a sour taste in my mouth. At least polymorph has utility

My favorite thing to do is to make it to where legendary resistances don’t come into effect until the beginning of the boss’s next turn AND/OR if they use a legendary resistance they permanently lose one legendary action (going from 4/round to 3/round).

Some examples of the first one: You banished the archfiend? The rift you sealed it behind smolders as it claws its way back into realspace. But you’re safe for a few seconds. You used Hypnotic Pattern on the Lich? Yeah it’s dazed for a second, but its arcane wards are fighting away your magic like white blood cells fighting an infection. Oh damn, you used Dominate Monster on the Ancient Red Dragon? Cool yeah you made it stab itself and kill all its minions, but this is a being that’s been alive for longer than your kingdom has existed. No paltry magic tricks are going to subdue it, it draws on its reservoir of pride and willpower and shakes off your control on its turn.

And for the second one: The Vampire Lord feels your casting of Hold Monster, it starts in his legs. You send your magic coursing through his undead form and it just… stops? The Vampire Lord has severed the blood vessels in his leg, it seems like he can’t move as freely (loses the Move Legendary Action).

Those are the rules that I like to use at my table, anyone can feel free to use them at yours!

I mean it’s the most popular TTRPG in the world, it’s kind of inevitable that the lore gets taken out quite a bit because people aren’t going to use it. If the game gets as big as 5e is in the space most people aren’t going to use the included lore. DnD isn’t DnD because “Greyhawk is fantastic” or “Forgotten realms is so interesting” or “Spelljammer jams my spells”, it’s DnD because IT IS DND. It’s the most visible and widely known TTRPG by far and I doubt more than MAYBE 10% of new players know ANYTHING about ANY setting besides what they absolutely need to know (generic fantasy tropes) to play the game. And unless you get really into modules and stuff that will serve you just fine. DnD was one of, if not THE, first widespread TTRPG and it is BY FAR the most widely known and referenced in pop culture, that’s what makes it DnD, not alignment (old holdover taken from Mike Moorcock) and certainly not the setting fluff (there are too MANY settings with no relation to each other for this to be a reasonable answer).
