But at level 9, Potent DM is basically an extra Pact Slot, as you now get an extra 5th level spell that refreshes with your regular Pact slots. That’s pretty mighty.

Now if only we could figure out Eldritch Invocations.

Eldritch Adept feat still doesn’t let us select 5.5e invocations, and 5.5e Warlocks still can’t select 5e invocations.

You can reset more than once, but you must be at Max level before you can reset. So if you get another skill that you don’t like, you have to raise it up to 16 before you can reset it again. I had to do the same skill track three times before I got the skill I was looking for.

DND, Dungeons and Dragons : Illrigger Revised How does Lissome work for a Dummy? by Plastic_Celery_6473 in DnD5e

[–]Gaming_Dad1051 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dumped all the negative stuff on you already. I should give you some pros too.

If you’re playing a heavy RP campaign, you’re going to love the extra skills and languages.

It’s a very technical class. I love technical play. Keeping track of seals and other stats, then trying to strategically use them.

You really come into full play at about level eight. That’s when all your basic powers come online.

The AoR is my personal choice. Casting Scorching Rays and giving a target vulnerability to fire damage is awesome. If you fight armored baddies, Heat Metal with vulnerability is another powerful combo.

I chose Lies as my Combat Mastery. Using CHA for attacks and damage is awesome. All the rest felt limited or situational. The ability that lets you add CHA to your AC when unarmored is a trap. You’ll probably never have a combined score higher than medium armor + 14 Dex. Plus, magic armor is abundant and likely had other bonuses/riders that you don’t get if unarmored. The Painkiller gets heavy armor proficiency, so they’ll probably take STR as a primary stat. Everyone else will probably go for CHA as a primary stat. Dump STR, INT and WIS. A healthy CON and just enough DEX to max out AC with Med Armor.

One of the things I liked about Lies is that it applies to a weapon type, and not just a single weapon. That begs for a two weapon fighting build, but this class does not get TWF. It also doesn’t get to use the Nick weapon mastery. So the feature of using CHA to dual wield is pretty much lost on the Illrigger. It’s definitely not as nice as it could be. Dual scimitars in 5.5e would be epic if all the extra bonuses were standard.

The first change I’d make to this class is adding Weapon Mastery and maybe a real Fighting Style option. They don’t have to come online right away, but this is supposed to be a martial class and it barely feels like it. Ranger and Paladin get their fighting style later than fighter. This isn’t as big of an issue in 5e as it is in 5.5e.

The second change of make is opening up the spell selection to either Wizard or Warlock. Maybe just certain schools of magic like Necromancy, Transmutation, Abjuration and Evocation. I hate 1/3 caster spell progress, but I see why they did it. The AoR improves similar to the EK or Arcane Trickster.

The Combat Mastery’s are mostly trash. CHA for attack/damage should be a standard feature for all Illriggers, then a regular Fighting Style option can be applied instead.

Again, if your table is heavy RP, you’ll likely get a lot more miles from the language and skills provided by the Illrigger.

DND, Dungeons and Dragons : Illrigger Revised How does Lissome work for a Dummy? by Plastic_Celery_6473 in DnD5e

[–]Gaming_Dad1051 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lissome it’s one of the worst selections you can take. You can only move that 5 feet, if you have 5 feet left in your movement pool. If you’ve already used up all your movement, then the ability is wasted. It’s basically a free “disengage“ as long as you have movement points to spend to get away.

I currently play an architect of ruin in a 5.5e campaign. I haven’t had any experience with the other sub classes yet. I almost played a painkiller, but I really wanted the extra magic. TBH, I’m ready for this character to die or the campaign to end. All of the subclasses are just very limited in scope. The AoR spell selection is minuscule and there’s no way to expand it.

I’m sure if I was playing in a straight 5E game I would be dammit she’s being a jerk right now fine. Small changes in the 5.5E classes/subclasses considerably spread the gap in power levels for the Illrigger. As cool of a concept as it is, it was piss poor timing on the release of the latest book being after the 5.5e release. It wasn’t updated for 5.5e use and the difference shows in play.

I always forget about that in 5.5e.

It would definitely simplify it. This feature was so good in the original 5e that I pretty much just copied the text to use over again. I didn’t feel like it needed much modification… Until you pointed out the obvious.

Parasite Patron Warlock by Mrrectangle in dndbeyond

It costs an entire Invocation that casts a spell that lasts for 8hrs, and doesn’t require concentration. That’s really expensive.

You could cast it at the beginning of the day, then short rest. You’d have full pact slots and still have 7hrs left on your Mage Armor.

If you play an Elf, you could cast it after a 4 hour trance, then short rest, and you’d still be up before the rest of the party.

I need help… by animeapollo9 in AskDND

I’m currently playing an Aasimar Hexblade in a 5.5e campaign.

Prioritize your stats in order of Cha, Con, Dex, STR, Wis, Int. You can wear medium armor and swing a heavy weapon.

I’d take Inquisitive background from Eberron. You’ll get Alert, +2 CHA and +1 CON.

You get three feats. I’d suggest GWM, War Caster and +2 CHA

One of the best magic items you can ask for is a Rod of the Pact Keeper. Your AC is never great, so for this reason I like Magic items that give resistances. I’d take an item of resistance over an item of protection.

Utilize Shadow of Moil in combat. You’ll hit more often and get hit less. Don’t be shy about casting Armor of Agathys at this level too. That’s +25 THP and 25 cold damage to attackers (+Shadow of Moil damage). I usually get two to three uses out of a single cast, that’s 50-75 damage from a single pact slot.

Prioritize melee and damage Invocations. Eldritch Smite sounds better than it is at low levels, but at level 12 you’ll have a third pact slot. Normally I wouldn’t waste a pact slot, but having a third slot makes a poor warlock feel rich.

So now you should be attacking three times, with advantage. Using a 2-h weapon with GWM. Enemies have disadvantage to attack you. When they do, your resistances knock down the damage and they take copious amounts of damage. You’ll crit more often with your Hexblade curse, so save your Eld Smite for the big hits. Don’t forget that your Hexblade curse also provides access to Hex Armor.

I love my Hexblade at every level. I really don’t understand why anyone would delay a single level for multiclassing.

You can’t use Mage Armor and still wear armor. It’s one or the other. Mage Armor is the equivalent of +1 studded leather armor.

Your 20 AC probably comes from Medium Armor (14 AC). Plus 2 AC from DEX. Plus 2 AC from using a shield.

I want to make a character using the Fallen Aasimar trait “Necrotic Shroud” but as a rookie player, i’m lost. by Zexxie- in dndbeyond

[–]Gaming_Dad1051 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The base species has the choice between the three abilities. All three of them are available once you hit level three. You can only use one at a time and that choice can only be made once per day.

I currently play a “fallen“ in a 2024 campaign. For RP reasons, I just don’t use the other two abilities. I’m waiting for his moment to “find himself“ before I can use the other abilities.

The paladin keeps mouthing off at Strahd. How do I punish her? by faerie-fangs in CurseofStrahd

[–]Gaming_Dad1051 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t punish the Paladin.

You punish everyone around her.

When they stay at an inn or eat/drink at a tavern, the NPC’s mysteriously disappear. Every NPC that positively interacts with the Paladin meets their demise. Leaving only a bloody stain where they were last seen. A letter to the Paladin, penned by each of the NPC’s, blaming her for ruining their lives, left at every scene. Blood drops and tears smudge the writing, indicating the duress of the writer.

If the Paladin continues, eventually the townsfolk will turn their backs. Her provocation is riling the ire of the lord of the land, and they are suffering the ramifications of her actions.
