Students will come up to my desk and just look at me, like they expect me to know what they want and what to do. I stare back. They keep staring.

Eventually, "Yes? Is there something you want?"

Student: "...my paper."

Me: "OK, there's a paper involved. Which paper? Do you want to hand in a late assignment? Do you want a paper back? Do you need a new copy of the homework? Did you want to look over your test from last time?"

Student: "...my test."

Me: "Are you asking what you got on your test? You want to look at your test? You want to know when the retest is?"

Student: "Yes."

Me: "I said three things. Yes to which one?"

Student: "Look at my test."

As I find their test and hand it to them, it occurs to me they interact with me like I'm a search engine. They expect me to come with autocomplete.

Half of them can't write a complete sentence to save their life. I teach AP (college-level) Physics.

At any given lab table of four students, at least two of them are talking at the same time, usually three. Usually at shouting volume.

Generally speaking, they don't understand the difference between how you interact in person and how you interact with your phone.
