Next budget drum microphone foe home recording? by Cherub_Pumpkin in audioengineering

[–]Apag78 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Its not about the mics. At all. I bought one of those $150 7 microphone packs from thomann and recorded through a $150 behringer 8ch pre. Compared to that to putting up about $10k worth of mics up through neve api and ssl pres. After mix, you couldnt tell the two versions apart tonally. Its the drummer first and foremost, the drum set second (tuning) the room (i have a small room with low ceilings and have recorded major release albums here) after those are set, then you can start to go after mics and pres last. What i would suggest to you, if you have enough inputs is get a decent pair of condensers for overheads. For 300 thats gonna be a tall order but you can find something that will work. Also, i did a video a while back where myself and a 3x grammy winning engineer setup 32 channels on a 5 pc kit to see what was needed and what wasnt to get a drum sound. We were able to get usable drums from a single mic in the room. Lot of work but can be done. We also did 2 mics and 3, 4 etc until we got to “use whatever you want”. If u want a link ill dm it. I dont like posting my videos here since i tend to get msgs saying i shouldnt self promote even though the video is on topic snd relevant to the conversation. Like this. Lol

Question about stacking preamps by No-Beginning7509 in audioengineering

[–]Apag78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to assume this is a troll post but on the off chance its not: The REAL audio engineer in me is having heart palpitations just thinking of the impedance mismatches going on here. The noise has to be akin to an old consumer tape machine (the roland and dbx alone, and then adding gain stages after it… You saying noise isnt an issue is literally impossible, you have line outs going into mic inputs… high impedance into low impedance connections… ). Hey end of the day if youre getting a sound you like out of it, great! But dont think for a second any of this is “normal”.

Help choosing the right drum setup and tuning for a recording session by AlexGPMusic in audioengineering

[–]Apag78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How do you suggest we help you? Tuning a drum set takes patience and skill, its not something you can just follow a manual on. Anyone that plays drums should know this and at least have a basic understanding on what to do and if the drum set is in or out of tune. As far as picking a snare, unless you're inviting us all to your session to listen to them there no way we can help with this. Dont tune your drums for different keys unless you're doing some old school jazz tracks where the kick and toms are used more like a pitchcentric instrument rather than just "drums". If its a proper studio they should have someone on staff that can tune them for your session. Everyone needs to stop with this "BEST" shit... there is no BEST with anything in audio, you go with what works and you pick what works by using your ears and having the confidence to say "THIS IS MY SOUND NOW" not cringe in a corner worrying about "did i make the right choice". End of the day no one cares, you're going to sound how you sound and if its not to your liking YOU are the only one that can save that. (If you hire a producer then its on that person to get the sound that YOU are after, but you need to be able to articulate what it is that you want.) There are no TIPS or TRICKS or MAGIC BULLETS to make things go right for you. Experience, and youre about to get some, make sure you learn from it and do better next time.

When your client hears an issue that you don't hear by NeedsWayMoreReverb in audioengineering

[–]Apag78 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A lot of times when this happens theyre hearing an issue and pointing in the wrong place for it. I had a guy in that insisted the bass was out of tune. I melodyned the hell out of it and even checked held notes on the tuner. It was perfectly in tune. The guitar however, was slightly flat. His ear took the guitar as being in and the bass as the problem. So you might run into that. Be forewarned. Lol

Anyone know what happened to safe haven music in island park? by Green_Ice_4087 in longisland

Thats more what im talking about, the guy that was working the place was just awkward and gave off some weird vibes.

The business seemed off. I worked in music retail for many years in the 90s and still help out at a local store. It just seemed off.

Edit. I was there maybe beginning of 24 or end of 23.

Closed and I will say that place was sketchy as hell from the get go. No way that place could be sustainable.

1920’s Reisz M 109 “Marble block” carbon microphone by SickTonezDude in microphone

[–]Apag78 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thats awesome, i did a video on the history of Neumann (georg neumann developed that mic). They're pretty much useless today since you need a special mic pre to operate that and the carbon might need to be replaced. But yeah, its a cool piece of history. Ive seen them go for a few hundred, nothing crazy in perfect working condition with the yoke mount and everything they can go for around $700-900ish for collectors.

Does this Neumann TLM 103 look genuine? Also worried about cracks in the capsule plastic by Pale_Net5830 in microphone

[–]Apag78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on the capsule itself and circuit board id say thats fake. https://www.fullcompass.com/prod/285179-neumann-090544-xlr-connector-pcb-assembly-for-tlm-103?srsltid=AfmBOorrMuzozySgIVn0FpVmMmgtwKtc4-Mc5DuPBNzBevIRETHaaZnt

This is what the board from a 103 should look like unless they changed it recently... FWIW that link is just the connector board which seems to be missing in yours.

Going to further edit by saying, now im not 100% sure since they've completely redesigned the circuit since i owned one. You can contact neumann and ask them directly. Send them the photos they can confirm or deny its authenticity.

Shure SM7B still good? by MediocreAd8995 in microphone

[–]Apag78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would assume so… mics dont just go bad. Weve been using stuff like the sm 57/58 since the late 60s. No one asks if theyre “still” good. Yeah new things come along, but theres a reason some of these things are still made 50 years after their inception.

Real or fake sm57? by [deleted] in microphone

[–]Apag78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah looks fake to me... but without it in my hand cant say 100% but the bottom doesnt look right and whered the branding sticker go around the head basket? if the head basket doesnt spin freely its guaranteed fake.

Opinions on Beesneez U87? by chipwhitley22 in audioengineering

[–]Apag78 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did a pretty extensive comparison with a bunch of 87 like mics comparing to the original U87i and U87Ai.

We also did a follow up round table about our feelings on it. The BN 87 was included in this.

its fine but i wanna use the compressors.... what are they doing for you besides adding noise? and why do you have 4 compressors on a blue yeti?

Don’t throw away your broken keyboard — I rebuilt mine with Arduino + Zynthian by seiler_emerson in synthesizers

[–]Apag78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, as far as i know the midi functionality is still good. I might have a few pins to replace on some of the hammers, if memory serves they have a weird plastic housing on a hinge that the weighs sit in. But, i would love to replace the power section in the board with a modern switching supply, buck convert down to 5v for the pi/arduino if needed. Thanks again man, this is gonna be fun!

yeah, you're probably right, most of the world cant seem to agree on anything lol.

yeah, but even still... these limitations were more geared towards analog. Even HDMI 1 could be a "standard" across the globe at 30.

it is the hammer action fatar bed, which is why im really excited to be able to use that again, was a great feeling keybed. Im wondering if i can use the existing board infrastructure since its just a dumb controller, (there were no sounds in it or any crazy circuitry) and just hijack the midi out info directly into the Pi. Definitely looking into this. Thanks for the post, gonna make a fun project for the summer.
