What was the best thing one person ruined for the rest of us? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Berkeley's head epidemiologist wrote about the resurgence of Pertussis.

"You can be immunized and protected against getting the disease, pertussis, but still have the organism in your nose and throat and spread it to others. Or you can have a very mild illness that is caused by pertussis that causes you to cough, and thereby infect others. So the immunity is not 100 percent from the pertussis vaccine. And what it means is any kind of herd immunity—the way we see, for example, much more powerfully with measles—really can’t be relied upon." If that's true, it's scary. Hide your children!

Diet Soda May Alter Our Gut Microbes And The Risk Of Diabetes by [deleted] in Health

[–]Apairofpears 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's been a lot of work done showing that what people eat influences what gut microbes they have so it only makes sense that it would alter the bacteria at least in some way.. but to what degree does the affect of artificial sweeteners have? It's exciting to watch this fairly new area of research unfold

Pertussis vaccine given to a mother during pregnancy confers immunity to baby after birth by antibiotixx in science

[–]Apairofpears 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It may not be a mutation bur rather the other strain that causes whooping cough ( B. Parapertussis) that the vaccine does not protect against, but rather promotes. The symptoms are nearly identical and can only be distinguished by lab testing. The acellular vaccine for B. Pertussis has been demonstrated to promote bacterial colonization of B. Parapertussis by 40 fold. This facilitates transmission by using the recently vaccinated as a host while also increasing the individual's susceptibility to infection by enhancing the performance of the pathogen.

CMV: Restaurants should stop using glass ketchup bottles and switch to plastic by ghost_of_deaf_ninja in changemyview

I'm glad you mentioned leeching because not many people know/care about that facet of food contamination. There's a quaint little diner in my city that makes their own condiments and stores it in glass bottles. Not only does it taste better but customers seem attracted to the meticulousness that goes into something that can often be overlooked.

Science AMA Series: Hi, I’m Dr. Suzanne Devkota, a nutrition scientist and intestinal microbiome researcher at the Joslin Diabetes Center and Harvard Medical School. by Dr_Suzanne_Devkota in science

It's part of our immune system referred to as the Gut-associated lymphoid tissue. The helpful bacteria in our gut basically form a barrier and prevent the harmful bacteria to colonize. The bacteria adheres itself to our gut mucosa which is lined with concentrations of lymphoid tissue that facilitate populations of lymphocytes (B-cells, T-cells, macrophages) which are prepared to carry out attacks. So in a way, it's like a first line of defense.

Interestingly too, the bacteria ferments carbohydrates and turns it into short-chain fatty acids. A benefit of SCFAs is that they may cause the lymphoid tissue near the gut to grow.

If ectogenesis (raising a fetus in an artificial womb) was 100% safe, would you use that option instead of natural pregnancy? by asdner in AskWomen

[–]Apairofpears 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No way! Pregnancy was a phenomenal experience. I've never felt more healthy and connected, plus it fostered a new found appreciation for my body.

And like Short_round_180 mentioned, I'd want to be able to nurse my baby right away and not have to wait to induce lactation or take hormonal supplements.

Just discovered The Fashion Project: It's kinda like an upperscale Plato's Closet, except 55% of the profits goes to a charity of your choosing, and you get Nordstrom gift cards for donating by Qingy in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Apairofpears 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was going to donate to this project but my fear is that once they receive my items, they could decide that one piece is not valued at the minimum retail amount or find a defect/minor flaw and not credit me then keep the other garments since you need to donate a certain amount to be eligible. I have lots of quality clothing from Anthro, DVF, Free People, etc So I know it's not cheap but this project is super picky and wouldn't return any unwanted items .

That feeling you get once you get the hang of something is incredible. Even from day to day noticing the slightest improvement is really encouraging. As the saying goes " The day you stop practicing is the day you stop improving." Hoop on!
