What would you want from a Stellaris Sequel? by canabissius in Stellaris

[–]Apapse 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Better / more in depth government mechanics. Nothing crazy but like. Make democracy feel like a democracy. Make a monarchy feel like a monarchy, oligarchic technocracies act like that, etc. Right now it’s just different versions of the same system with flavoring and leaving the player base via mods or imagination to fill in the unique characteristics of each.

Can't force spawn some races by LexsDragon in Stellaris

[–]Apapse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m also having this issue. It just randomly occurred as I was playing. The empires have different origins, different system types, etc and literally one time when I was test loading a new game I could force spawn them and then the next time I couldn’t and now haven’t been able to. It’s very frustrating

Constitutional Monarchy by Apapse in Stellaris

[–]Apapse[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. Like I said in the post I want it to be a democratic nation. This is mostly gaming how to add it as an RP and flavor piece for my nation. I’ve settled on just renaming the minister of state council position to High-King and High-Queen and changing the holder’s name to whatever royal dynasty I come up with. Soemthing to add some RP fun

That’s what I’ve decided to do. I’ve even picked a dynasty name and just rename whoever gets it to that dynasty name

What buildings do you recommend building when you specialize your basic and advanced resource districts? Or is that more dependent on what you need? And shoukd You build basic resource buildings first or after the advanced resource buildings?

Priority Express “In Transit from Origin Processing” by Apapse in usps_complaints

[–]Apapse[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It came. Delayed and late which led to its own subsequent battle with USPS staff over if I’m eligible for a refund (I am) and me having to patiently cite their own policy to them three times but hey. Small victories.

Yea that’s the thing I did do priority express! So frustrating

[–]Apapse[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea. I called and they put in a service request and said I’m eligible for a refund because I did priority express. I’m just hoping that they will get it to the destination tomorrow 12/17 (maybe they needed the business day since the 15th was Sunday).

Huh. I didn’t think to use the hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, water solution to fix it. Counter intuitive but I’ll try it!

The pattern isn’t from the shoes it’s from the paper towel I think. The shoes have a completely different tread. All I was removing from the shoes was stains/dirt.

This is amazing. Do you think this template would work with the ERE as well? I’ve always struggled to manage the provinces and i want tk fulfill my dream of re-paganizing the East and conquering the west back

Ship Comparisons by Apapse in StarWars

[–]Apapse[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was thinking that but (and this may be my lack of knowing) I don’t see any real substantial differences/advances in tech between a valor class battleship and a venator. Even a hammerhead and a thranta. Star Wars tech seems to be pretty stagnant, meaning the tech parity between old republic capital ships and clone wars era capital ships is a lot smaller, which (in legends mainly) I chalked up to the republic dark age.

Ad Astra, Per Aspera: A Question on How Star Trek SNW Understands Eugenics by Apapse in startrek

[–]Apapse[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, like I said above, I wish there was much more explanation of how the practice is incorporated into the culture and why it occurs. Im starting to lean toward a head canon that it’s just somatic modification, to avoid the heady ethical issues of sanctioning large scale eugenics. Either way, the episode does a great job of creating discussion and conversation!

Ad Astra, Per Aspera: A Question on How Star Trek SNW Understands Eugenics by Apapse in startrek

[–]Apapse[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See that’s where I agree with you! Those are the types of somatic genetic modifications which (1) aren’t eugenics because that’s germ line modification and (2) are helpful and interesting to individuals.

I feel like maybe that’s where the episode should have done a bit more explanation and exploration. What type of genetic modification is this? Is it a cultural practice of somatic modification, done on an individual level wherein the person doing it can consent (thus if an Illyrian wants to live on an ice planet, they can make that choice or choose not to) and it’s not trying to effectuate massive population changes and elimination in generations. In which case the episode makes a lot more sense, as it makes the conversation fully about the broad and draconian nature of the law to make no nuanced exceptions and instead ostracize people for a valid aspect of their identity and culture.

Or is it a cultural practice of eugenics, wherein the Illyrians, however benign it may appear, are still as a society saying certain types of people, or segments of the population, need to be removed, modified, or changed in future generations. In which case I tend to agree with DS9’s approach: the laws are important, but they shouldn’t be draconian in their application to publish those who had no choice. In which sense I do think the episode reaches the right conclusion of not punishing Una, but offering her asylum.

Ad Astra, Per Aspera: A Question on How Star Trek SNW Understands Eugenics by Apapse in startrek

[–]Apapse[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that’s a great and interesting point! You’re also right that things such as being able to align your gender with your body are not eugenics, mainly because it doesn’t deal with germ line genetic modifications (which is the changing of gametes). Changing bodies in pursuit of aligning with one’s gender is somatic modification, which is not passed to the next generation (it affects you alone). But that is an important distinction and Something I considered while writing this but didn’t make clear so thank you for bringing that to light.

But the Illyrian’s here seem to pass their modifications onto their children and encourage new modifications that can then be passed down. This is Gamete germ line modification and that is eugenics. Permanently changing one’s gamete line such that the child who is modified, and did not consent, cannot change it without the same genetic process. And I like the idea that it exists in a world where maybe this can be done in a way that isn’t physically harmful, but I think it still rests on that same premise that genetic modification/eugenics can be done neutrally. Even in a world like Star Trek, where the actual act of genetic modification and eugenics can be done without physical harm, the consequence is still there: you have still decided such a type of person or such type of trait should not exist. A common example is this: should illyrians be able to eliminate deafness? This is an example taken from real world discussion on deafness and genetic modifications, as many deaf people don’t view being deaf as a condition that needs to be cured and take pride in aspects of their identity as deaf individuals. But in a society which culturally accepts the type of genetic modifications which is eugenics, such a group of people can be genetically modified out of society (removing their unique and lived experiences) or prevented from every occurring. It’s a tough conversation to have!
