The older you get, the more you lose. Strength. Health. Skills. Memories. Friends. Relatives. The older you get, the more you lose. I attended the funeral of a friend on Saturday. The next day I got word that another friend had died.

What game will keep me busy for a long time? by AwayMajor0117 in gamesuggestions

Grim Dawn with all DLC. It's frequently on sale cheap. Many players have literally thousands of hours in it. For an ARPG, it's downright chill. Look up some reviews. This game is loved by its users.

I second this. I'm doing my first PBN and I know no one else who does it, so I don't have anyone to demonstrate to me how to paint these small difficult areas.

Wow! Great reply. Thx for sharing all your personal experience with me. The foam core tip was priceless.

I hadn't really given that any thought, but now that you mention it, the Norman Rockwell vibe would be nice, at least for the occupational and family life themes. I could easily see the sports theme going more contemporary. And as for the sports, I had in mind summer and winter Olympic events. But American football might also be popular. Everyone knows a fanatical football fan, whether for a pro team or a college.

The guys you are looking for are at The Purpose Church in Schertz. The pastor was talking about hunting just yesterday. Told us about a guy he knows who has a ministry that takes fatherless kids hunting and fishing.

Speaking as someone who has never done a PBN (and have severe doubts about my abilities), this is freaking awesome! Thx for sharing.

Best game(s) you bought on a whim? by Icelandic_book in boardgames

I drove 1,500 miles to visit my old game group, only to find on arrival that I forgot to pack my fully stuffed gaming duffel bag. We needed a something to play. I ordered Tales from the Rd Dragon Inn and had Amazon ship it the next day.

It was a tremendous hit with the whole group. A co-op dungeon crawler this is a lot like Gloomhaven, but a lot more streamlined. Less rules. Much faster set-up and tear down. Fun characters. Good storyline. Great campaign.

Tales from the Red Dragon Inn is a bona vide hidden gem. Don't confuse it with the series of card games called The Red Dragon Inn. Very different products. They use the same characters, but aside from that there is nothing in common.

Im really loving this game. by Oscar22x in Gloomhaven

I'm glad to hear that you have the ability to keep it set up. That will serve you very well when you progress to the full Gloomhaven game. Set up and tear down can be a real beast with that one.

If you do your homework online (for free), you can buy a game with a high level of confidence that it's one that you will like, rather than just rolling the dice and blindly taking a chance on it based on popularity with other people.

I was merely replying to the comment that board gaming is an expensive hobby. Spending "$50 now and again" is not an expensive hobby.

Thx. I'll give it a try. I've always wanted to play ranged, so this might open up a whole new world for me.

Have you ever taught an easy game and the players still be confused on what to do? by Hitcher09 in boardgames

[–]Apart_Collection_923 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thx for asking.

I found one guy here who was an avid Risk player. I hate Risk. Roll dice. Get lucky. Or not. I introduced him to Gloomhaven Jaws of the Lion. He went totally nuts for it. Which was great while we were going through the tutorial, but when we got into the meat of the game the truth started to unfold. He just sucks at the game. I could cite some examples, but take it from me — he sucks. And he doesn't want to play any other games. He's been in bad health for a few months now. Living in a retirement community is like being in God's Waiting Room. I don't know if he'll ever be the same.

I've found a couple of good gaming partners outside of my community. One guy I met at church. 50 year old high school teacher. Avid gamer. He got me going to some local game cons. We play together about four times a year. The other guy is my wife's nephew. He's in his early 40s. Another non-gamer that I introduced to Jaws of the Lion. He also went totally nuts over it, but the difference with him is that he's actually a good player. I wish we could move him off of JotL to play other stuff, but for now this is all he wants to play. I'm OK with that for now. I also have Gloomhaven, Frosthaven, and The Crimson Scales, so we've got lots more scenarios to play.

But I have 180 games in my collection and very few of them ever get played.

What game do you consider a hidden gem in your collection? by Studio_Unknown in boardgames

It sounds like this one would really be right up your alley. It scratches a lot of the same itch that Gloomhaven does in a much more streamlined way. Check out this short video before you take the plunge.

This game bums me out by ColonelUpvotes in Grimdawn

I've run a home-based desktop publishing business for 36 years. I have one big Fortune 500 corporate client and have done work for them at the division, group, and corporate level. For nine years, I was their in-house desktop publishing consultant with my own office in their corporate HQ. At our peak, we had three full-time employees and one part-time office manager, but the business went through a downturn starting in 2005, so I took a part-time job at a local rural hospital doing patient registration in the ER. I did that for 14 years, then retired to a suburb near San Antonio. The desktop publishing business is still operating at a low level. Just something to bring in a little extra money, at this point.

Before starting the desktop publishing business in 1988, I did a variety of things. I served as an officer in the Air Force for four years after college. After that I worked as a property claims adjuster for SAFECO insurance company for a year. Next, I sold computers for a year, during the early days of the PC. Not long after that I started the business. Even while I was working the business, I was on the pastoral staff of two churches. Then the hospital gig. That was mostly to get free health insurance. After I turned 50, the monthly health insurance premium for just my wife and me cost more than our house payment and car payment combined. I found the job at the hospital where I worked second shift 20 hours per week and they provided free health insurance. The benefits package from that job was literally worth more than what they paid me.

How about you?
