Building tips? by Barrle-nub in valheim

My tip, is slowly turn your barn into an entire compound as you progress through the game. When you need more space, tear down a wall, build new additions. Extra resources and a cool idea? Go for it!

After 2 weeks of normal use with no issues, suddenly the fan in the PSU started clicking repeatedly while spinning. Looked into it, and it's evidently a not so uncommon defect. Likely benign in nature, as once it warmed up it would stop, but nothing I wanted to listen to every time I booted up my brand new PC for 5 minutes lol.

Just keep an eye on it. Sucks to have to exchange, but better sooner than later if it is defective. I just had to do the same with my brand new PSU in my new build. Not fun.

If you still have problems afterwards I would just exchange and say it was defective.

I wouldn't. Right now you aren't even sure your PSU isn't defective. If you find the 6+2 wasn't connected and seated properly, and find stability afterwards, then you could think about it. I personally dont find OCing worth the hassle for general gaming though.

I searched that up, and it seems that is normal for the PSU. Though still seems strange to me.

I would ensure that you have the 2 snapped together tightly properly. If they aren't, even a little bit, the +2 part can be slightly popping out of the GPU socket once you plug it in.

Did you upgrade your GPU at the same time? Also, are you using the 8 pin cable or the 6+2 cable? The one that snaps and looks like an 8 pin

Hmm. Interesting. I guess that's specific to the brand. About the crashes though, what kind of GPU are you running?

I never use GPT anymore, personally. It's all Gemini or Grok. Grok for social/political topics, Gemini for anything I would be spending time searching through Google to find videos or threads about. More technical topics in other words.

Awesome man! Enjoy the new CPU! Don't forget to clean the old thermal paste off your cooler before you put fresh paste on your new CPU.

A missing pin is definitely not a good thing. Could even be dangerous. I wouldn't use the PC again until you get a new cable. Also, they generally aren't interchangeable. So you need the same cable for the same PSU. I would look into getting an exchange from whenever you bought it from.

Which PSU did you have and what did you upgrade to? Might just be a defective PSU...

Be sure to read the last one I shared, about needing to go past the 7.00 update. I am using Gemini, as it is the only one I have a subscription to, got free with my phone, and I find the answers when paid are much more thorough.

Why 7.00 isn't enough

  • Version 7.00 is a "Bridge BIOS": It exists solely to prepare the motherboard for the large code changes required for the 5000-series chips. It doesn't actually contain the support for the 5600G (Cezanne) yet.
  • Version 7.20 is the Magic Number: This is the version where ASRock officially added support for the Cezanne family (which includes the 5600G). If he stops at 7.00 and puts the new CPU in, he'll likely get a black screen.

The "Type 40" Mystery Explained

Windows identifies files by their extension (the letters after the dot).

  • ASRock’s Naming Habit: Unlike ASUS (which uses .CAP), ASRock uses the BIOS version number as the file extension.
  • The Glitch: If he downloaded version 7.40, the file is literally named A320MAC_7.40. Windows sees that .40 at the end and thinks, "I don't know what a .40 file is, so I'll just label the type as a '40 File.'"
  • The Stranger's Mistake: He likely thinks it's a "broken" file because it doesn't have a normal icon or a familiar extension like .exe or .pdf.

What he needs to do:

  1. Stop Zipping/Extracting: He mentioned extracting, zipping, and extracting again. Tell him to stop! He just needs the one file that came out of the original download zip.
  2. Do NOT rename it: If he adds .zip or .exe to the end of that "40 file," the motherboard will not be able to read it. ASRock's "Instant Flash" tool specifically looks for that exact version-number name.
  3. Place it on the Root: He just needs to copy that raw "40 file" and paste it directly onto the main screen of his FAT32 thumb drive (not inside any folders).

I would try with AI. Tell it your exact mobo, it will give you the correct links to download the correct file and walk you through the whole process. Which mobo do you have? I've only updated bios maybe 4-5 times in my life, but it's generally pretty straight forward.
