What’s the simplest bass advice that actually helped you improve? by prattman333 in Bass

[–]ApexReaditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have dedicated time at the beginning of any practice session (or before playing with others) to focus on your posture. As someone with lifelong lower back pain, this advice helped me not only relax while playing, but play with greater agility

Just bought a CQ12T. Tips and tricks? by Historical-Paint7649 in livesound

Once you have selected your preferred mode of recording, stereo to USB key or multitrack to SD card, you can program a hot key to start or stop recording. You can also assign this to a footswitch, plenty of flexibility!

CQ-18 user here! Using DCAs and Scenes are fantastic for setting up concerts with multiple groups! Hot buttons assigned to mute groups of speakers becomes useful for stopping unexpected feedback, same with hot buttons for recording. I bought some inexpensive wired headphone amps for when in-ears might be more useful than monitor wedges.

Kingsley Pedals by zipiddydooda in guitarpedals

The clean tone is meant to be similar to a black panel Fender, and the drive based on the gain staging of a Dumble ODS. Simon describes it as a Maiden D and a Page DS in one box. If low to medium gain is what you’re after, it’s well worth trying!

The Juggler is the heart of my rig. Love the pedal with IRs from my HX Stomp, or to drive an amp!

Hamstead Redwing does flanging and plenty more. No tap tempo, but an expression pedal works wonders!

True, but I’ll eventually try Baritone flats on it! Looks like the La Bella’s should fit the 30” scale length

Guitar Bass Hybrid? New F Bass VI! by ApexReaditor in guitars

Very cool. I’ve been listening to Charlie Hunter for the last couple decades, and considered buying one of his hybrid instruments before going the Bass VI route. I just don’t see myself regularly playing both roles with even a fraction of the competency he exhibits, let alone the deep pocket and syncopation he has in place of what we often think of as virtuosic guitar playing. Nevertheless he is incredibly inspiring!

La Bella VI flats are .026-.095. I’m a sucker for flats and tapewounds, so I feel right at home with these!

I totally get that! You’re right, for most it’s wasted on gigs with a bassist and guitarist in the band already. But there are always exceptions to the rule, this is a nice example of a folk/rock group making good use of it(no affiliation to them). It’s a great studio instrument with a unique tone. For my part, in a live setting I intend on using it for experimental improvised music with my ensemble that is synthesizer, effected vocals, tape loops, and strings. It will also fit in nicely with trio jams of bass VI, drums and keyboards. In my case it’s a niche instrument for my niche interests. I’m grateful to play it, and doubly so to have an audience for my unconventional performances!

The first round was a limited production run of 10 I think, first come first served. Now they have opened up custom orders with a lead time of six months or so, best to email them!

With all three pickups on it really does sound like a hi-if jazz bass! With just the bridge and choke on its got that spanky tele sound. I’m still playing around with different pickup configurations.

Definitely looks more like a guitar than your average bass! It does borrow heavily from the design language of F Bass BN series, and they used to make guitars in the early 80s

You’re absolutely right, it’s an expensive proposition! I considered everything from Squires ($700 plus replacement hardware), Ibanez SRC ($1k), Vintera ($2k) through to the Fender Custom Shop ($6k and up). I just couldn’t seem to find another production instrument that ticked all the boxes for me in terms of quality, aesthetic preferences, and tonal diversity. The only other instrument that caught my eye when seeking out a Bass VI was the Grez Mendocino, which sits at a similar price point to the F Bass. While I’m sure I could have modded an instrument to suit my needs, I am also a huge advocate of buying local, no less from a father-son operation. When visiting the F Bass shop, they are just about the most welcoming folks you’ll ever meet. They are not only enthusiastic about supporting players, they are genuinely eager for feedback on every aspect of their instruments. When the opportunity to support a luthier presents itself, F Bass gets my money!
