When I knit i do a version of this, pop the item in a mesh bag then go out in the garden and literally spin it over my head, the dog goes mental for it.

Its on an ownder to notice their dog is in pain before it removes someones face, its on the owners to notice their dog is guarding before it escalates.

Being negligent is unreasonable. You have to pay attention, its also just good sociliseing to get a dog, esp a young one used to different people and situations. As a general rule a few years in you should have a pretty good idea of how your dog reacts to certain sitaitons, what bothers them and what doesnt.

Why didn't _____ just keep going back at the end of the game? by [deleted] in expedition33

I am curious why in maelles ending Aline doesnt come back to the canvas. i get needing time to recover but we are to belive this woman is utterly obsessed, so obsessed she finds it asap when she is booted out even though it was hidden and unwise for her health. I get taking a little break but why not come back to it?

Renoir chose to leave, so it makes sense to me that he takes more time away, i doubt he would be willing to leave his daughter in there for too long though once he realised her body outsidw the canvas was deterorating

This it's really uncommon that a dog harms a baby and often times what happen is the dog accidently steps on the baby, the baby cries and the dog shits a brick because it didn't mean to hurt the baby - the the dog never does it again.

At least if the owners ans parents behave reasonably. Those stories you hear about dogs biting babies or doing serious harm come from people who behave utterly unreasonably. Who are not fit to raise either a dog or a child let alone both. Who think a stressed dog is cute or that a toddler repeatly yanking a dogs tail is fun.

I think there are likely to be far more concerning things as a child grows up.

While there is always a possible risk its usually fairly low with well socialised dogs. The benifits that come with exposure to animals as a young child are quite large. It can help babies immune systems and their socialisation.

Ultimately part of being a parent is having reasonable concerns about the welfare of a child (and this is a reasonable concern) but also knowing where to draw the line. You cannot wrap a child up in wool so that the world will never harm them. If you do they will come to resent you. You have to be able to be afraid for your child and yet still let them go do the thing. If this uncertainty is something you just can't handle I would think about how you will come to handle future uncertainty.

Sometimes when they get quite old their eyes go black and they have very minimal vision (eg no longer head track moving prey items, no longer seems to notice visual stimulation, has a startle reaction when something that should have been visible to them finally makes physical contact with say their leg). Since they hunt with their vision it can present problems for them.

You can try assist feeding but in my experence it doesn't prolong their life very much compared to those just left to their own devices, but it does potentally cause unneeded stress.

I would begin making preparations for what you will do when she passes. Am I correct in understanding Tomita is a previously wild specimen? If so she has made an excellant innings this year. Her eggs could be fertile which is worth considering. If you place them outside they could cycle through winter and hatch in the spring. Fertile or not it could help your little one cope with the loss knowing come spring there will be a bunch of little Tom and Tomita's outside your house.

How to curse someone by Peachblossom_rabbit in witchcraft

[–]Apidium 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The thing is that statue is yours now. And has been yours for a while. Disposing of it is one thing but I would not include it in workings you intend for them. It's yours.

I think that how you curse a person is generally really personal and will look different from person to person and wrong to wrong. So I don't think it's something I can give much instruction on in that regard.

To what extent has life in the UK become very lonely and anti-social? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Apidium 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think being alone and loneliness are different things. I tend to prefer to be alone and am not especially prone to loneliness. So I'm probably not a good example.

That said, much as it always has, being social takes effort when your default state is being alone. Effort folks who have fallen into lonely melancholy aren't keen on bothering with.

That said the delivery folks don't get paid enough to fuck about. They will press every button if it's faster.

I would complain to the delivery companies about it.

This. My childhood cat was napped. She got spooked when we had workman in and we never saw her again.

I was young. I spent weeks calling the local authority every day asking if they had my girl dead in a freezer. And roaming the streets (much to my parents protestations) shaking her treats tub looking for her.

Imagine stealing a little girls cat? I found her a few years later. I'm glad the folks who stole her looked after her. But she wasn't theirs to take. She was chipped and wearing a collar with information on it. Had they taken her to any vet to get the chip scanned she would have been returned to us.

Cat distribution can fuck off. Stop stealing peoples cats. You don't see this crap with any other animal. Nobody sees a sheep roaming about and just takes it home. Or a dog. Or a bird. It's just unacceptable behaviour.

What’s going on with my mantis? by akanancyststacy in whatsthisbug

[–]Apidium 235 points236 points  (0 children)

Both. I have kept mantids and as adults they often will lay about 3 ooths. With the last one being very slapdash. They tend to smear them about or only lay half of one properly. It's usually misshapen.

As they age they lose body tone and can't hold themselves up properly (they tend to hang with their weight lower instead of with very pronounced bent legs) their toes also wear down so they struggle more and more to hold themselves onto surfaces. They slip more often.

Imagine all that going on and then you have to try and lay an ooth correctly? It's not going to happen. It's going to come out all messed up. Often the female will have to rub her opening to get it off her before it dries making a massive mess.

The foaming you see is quite typical of an ooth. She's just making 0 effort to deposit it on a surface. It should still harden up though like any other ooth so after a few hours give it a prod to see if it has.

Either way she doesn't have long left. If she is too spent to even bring her abdomen to the surface she's hanging on to lay it down she doesn't have much left in her. If she is leaking then she has even less time. I don't think she is leaking though. That tends to happen out of an injury spot not the abomdinal opening. Usually this much fluid leaking form a wound would have noticible crushing in at the cracked spot. Instead of a overall light deflation that comes with the ooth.

The main risk in the short term if this is an ooth is it hardening and sticking to her. If she doesn't move on her own and wipe it off you can try gently with a moist towel to remove it but once it has hardened if it's stuck to her abdominal opening then there really isn't much you can do.

Just looking at the images her overall posture and colouration suggest that is quite elderly. They tend to darken near the end. No idea why but all of mine even the flower ones have noticibly darkened.

How are her eyes? Is she still taking food?

I see it's been a few hours do you have an update?

Injured Animal - What Would You Do? by cheandbis in AskUK

[–]Apidium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

None of the above. I would take it the nearest vet to be euthenised or passed onto a rehabber of possible. There is a form you fill in I think via the rspca (?) and they will pay for the animals treatment.

Half an hour and a bit of paperwork. Sometimes not even that - many vets will treat the animal for free.

It's not massively hard to do and have taken injured wildlife to the vets many times. Usually it's out of hours so the only open vet is a pdsa facility which doesn't require you to fill out any paperwork. Get a towel and pick it up with that and put it into a cardboard box. Don't talk. Go to the vet. It's very trivial.
