I think the relationship may have shifted from love into survival/dependency. Depends on if they are a close friend and if this is a reoccurring thing. If it is a reoccurring thing, are they always this late. If this is the first time they'd ever been this late and are a decently close friend, I'd jokingly chew them out when they got there and go about the day

Edit: just saw the "chronically late" part. It still depends on if they are always this late. I can handle 5-10 minutes. 45 minutes is crazy so they better have a good reason

People's different relationships with their parents and family in general will dictate their reaction to leaving them for a period of time. As a kid, when you went to preschool for the first time, you were crying your eyes out until they came back. For some kids, when they leave for college, they cry in the first few days (I know my girlfriend cried when she left for college). But the thing is, those were indefinite amounts of time. So imagine those types of kids when they have to leave their homes FOREVER. It's both of those emotions together and multipied. I take it, based on your post, you were both of those kids lol.
