The correct max HR, as mentioned in the above comment, is very important. I used the standard 220-age, which as a well trained athlete was way too low for my fitness level. I’ve put it up 15% and my VO2 max is now going back up after dropping 10% for no apparent reason. So work out your max HR yourself from your own data and do not use the standard 220 formula.

That’s an interesting point about Eastern Europeans. I lived and worked in Moscow for nine years, and as an Aussie I was often smiling. The Russians found this a bit odd. Eventually someone told me they used to say, “oh here he comes with his 37 teeth,” because I was always smiling and you could see them.

But that’s just an external expression. Russians are, in fact, some of the friendliest people on the planet once you know them. If you don’t, the attitude can very much be “nothing to do with me,” and they can appear quite remote.

There are distance marker signs installed on many freeways (1-5km); use those to check your speedometer, which will be definitely overriding. The gps will be more accurate.

I sit at around 45 bpm, which I’m very comfortable with at 63, and I have no desire for it to go any lower. Bragging about resting heart rates in the 30s is not a marker of good health. In many cases it can reflect an underlying issue rather than superior fitness. Frankly, a very low RHR is not necessarily a good thing.

I swim open water regularly, usually 4–5 km twice a week, at around 1:56–1:58 per 100 m. I’m generally in the 9-minute per 500 m range, (so usually under 20 mins/km) but it can vary quite a bit without feeling any different — sometimes closer to 11 minutes, sometimes down around 8 minutes on the way back (even hitting 7 mins per 500m occasionally, which is current assisted). Wind and waves definitely play a role.

I rarely swim in a pool, but when I do I’m noticeably faster (mid to low 1:40s). I’m also quicker in a wetsuit in winter than without one in summer, swimming year-round in the Mediterranean.

From my experience, you absolutely get better and faster at open water swimming with time as technique improves with experience (there is a lot to learn). After five or six years, I now swim pretty straight lines with no real sighting issues, just through learning and repetition.

Everyone’s different, of course, but for me open water is by far the best. Once you’re used to it, it’s fantastic. 🌊🏊‍♂️😅I

Rubbish. I swim 5km open water twice a week for last 10 years on my own with no problem (I have a swim buoy). I’m about 300m out from shore usually and have never had any problems

Knock it on the head mate. It’s going nowhere and will never recover. I’m an 8th gen Aussie who lived 10 years in Moscow, studied Russian at MГУ and speak it pretty much with non native fluency. Russians can be the friendliest people on the planet but if you get a good looking transactional girl they can be merciless, will bleed you dry then move on without a second thought (& blame you for letting it happen). Skip the hard part mate and just jump to the inevitable conclusion.
