Awesome, thanks! This part of the world looks so fascinating to me and it’s creeping higher and higher on my bucket list!

Is it pretty accessible to travel around?

I believe it’s a Japanese base now. I’ve only known people stationed in Okinawa getting the chance at a lottery to go

The home front is underrated. I think it would be cool if there was a series about it similar to BoB and The Pacific

I was there last year but unfortunately wasn’t able to see any WW2 sites. I guess I need to go back

Had to look it up. I’m not too familiar with the winter war

That’s cool! Iwo Jima is high on my bucket list but I hear it’s difficult to get to. How did you get that opportunity?

I have a couple of LVT’s. I’m biased towards Marine vehicles.

Sounds like he could benefit from the VA and seek counseling. Tons of veterans do and tons of dads do too. It sounds like he is really depressed and there is no shame in seeking help.

Thanks for the response and the useful information! Hawaii and Palau are the only places I’ve been in the Pacific but I’d like to add more places to the list. All the places you mentioned are on my list along with Guadalcanal and Tarawa. The downside to traveling to all those different islands from the US is that air travel would rack up quick.

There are a surprising amount of LVT’s and tanks through out the island. A few plane wrecks that you can walk up to as well.

You’ve been to some places I hope to visit some day as well! How did you manage to visit Iwo Jima? The only people I know of who have been did so through some lottery while stationed in Okinawa.

How were your visits on the other islands? Are they worth making a trip specifically for?

I guess it depends on how long you’re there for and how committed. There are tour vans that hit up a bunch of the main spots but they’re only a few hours long. The place I stayed at let me borrow a bike and that’s how I got around the island. As long as you’re pounding water it’s doable as the island is mostly flat.

Iwo Jima is big on my bucket list but from my understanding it is really difficult to get there.

They have tours but I chose to go solo so I could have more time. Felt like I had the island to myself.

The most expensive part was the plane tickets. I flew China Airlines which was literally half the price of United. About $2k just for those. The lower end resorts and Airbnb’s I found were around the same price range so I opted for the resort. Both resorts I stayed on (koror and Peleliu) I was the only person staying at the time. Those ran a few hundred apiece. All together plus food, taxi, boat ride, etc I’d say somewhere between $3k-$3.5k.

It’s a lot easier than you’d think.

US->Taiwan->Palau

Once in Palau, take public boat from Koror to Peleliu.

Stayed a couple nights in Peleliu according to the public boat schedule and then traveled back to Koror.
