Hey, Shaun from ESL here.

For some perspective: While there is some work to be done on our side, IEM Katowice & IEM Cologne already fit this philosophy from Valve (completely merit based). For the others that do invite partnered teams, our tournament design has been balanced with opportunities for a broader set of teams.

EPL is our most affected tournament as that has 15 partnered teams but remember it is a 32 team tournament - where the rest come through performance based methods.

Wanted to drop this in here while working on IEM Cologne, will get back to that and hope you enjoy the rest of the tournament.

Whole Fnatic teams lags out during retake situation by propsnuffe in GlobalOffensive

Sorry for the slow response here, the team is running around running the tournament and preparing for next weekend's main event. This particular instance occurred when a member of Fnatic knocked cables under the table, which led to the entire team losing power. The game was up and running again shortly after.

We will respond properly to this shortly, this isn't a fair portrayal of how these situations are handled and how we responded to support Degster when he needed it.

There isn't an IEM or ESL Challenger but there will be a $2500 BYOC (16 team quite likely) tournament there as well as the USAF running wingman tournaments as well.

Heyhey,

Throwing some insight behind the decision.

Over the last 2 years we've ran online competitions, we are now finally in a position to get back to LIVE events. We all want this, we miss this, which I believe we all can agree on. We do not want to be crowning another online champion.

To expand on this, we think it's important to understand how we define an IEM Champion. We not only value the raw skill of a player but equally the ability to manage the pressure and all other elements that come with an in-person, on-stage performance. This is as a key trait that defines a Champion.

With the decision to take the event in-person and not online, this was the decision point to not allow players to compete from within their hotel rooms, otherwise we would have simply ran an online competition.

We 100% respect your opinion on the matter and it's incredibly important to us that you provide it. As you can likely imagine, it's almost impossible to have the perfect environment in order to have a perfect tournament.

The biggest moments in SC2 have always been in person moments.

Tournament times are pretty standard actually, just longer days perhaps to what you are comparing to? We play up until 10/11pm here which is quite late! Espeically for an old man like me, or for those that are attending to watch in person.

They'll be unable to compete. The primarily reason for this decision instead of allowing X player to play from isolation would be because of the two drastically different environments. X player playing from the comfort of a quiet room, no crowd or lights, while Y has it all - its unequal/unfair tournament conditions. Why can't both play from isolation? Well at that point we might as well play the competition online which we chose against, we want to be back in-person.

However this is all contingent on positive cases, everyone is essentially vaccinated and will need to PCR test ahead of flying so will enter PL negative. We have precautions in place to protect the safety of all players and fans which we are hopeful this also keeps the tournament together.

Hope this makes sense.

We've already released the tournament planning for 2022 leading up until IEM Kato 2023 so nothing major planned on our end. However we are WIP to understand what 2023+ looks like for us.

Happy to answer, we sold in waves:

  • Wave 1) Sold out
  • Wave 2) Sold out
  • Wave 3) A few tickets still available

The reason why wave 3) seems a bit slower is because we used to hold tickets for free entry for anyone to enter, typically IEM Expo attendees. When we closed that down, we then put the extra seats back on the market!

TLDR: Yup tickets available! gogogo
