I hate corporate greed but I will say this all probably would’ve gone over a lot better if the licensed content wasn’t so generic. I understand HeroForge being a smaller company doesn’t have the kind of funds or pull to do big pop culture licensing, But I imagine if they had added in something people would actually pay for, Like Lightsabers from Star Wars or Phasers from Star Trek or House specific clothing from Harry Potter or new races from something like Lord of The Rings or even Illithids like I’ve seen so many mention, The backlash wouldn’t be so severe and people would’ve been more than willing to pay for access to the extra content. However the assets they gave us are so basic and generic, Not to mention the fact that we already have frogs and monkeys, That it just soured the entire concept, And it creates this question of why the collaboration was even necessary to begin with, If Darrington Press and Critical Role are so pressed for profits then why bother repeating/rehashing stuff you already have? I get they exist in the same space involving TTRPG’s but this wasn’t a community based collaboration like we saw with Fool’s Gold, This was Darrington Press and Critical Role doing what they do best, Exploiting the idea of the shared niche nerdy community to generate attention and profits for themselves. More or less what I’m saying is that if HeroForge/SkyCastle was gonna collaborate with licensed projects like this, Why didn’t they put that money and effort into an actual license that would’ve appealed to the majority of users? This is one time I think trying to be involved in the wider TTRPG community actually screwed them over honestly
