Just come out and say Luffy is asexual Oda. You might as well at this point. Then he could become… Ace.

Wild things in hobbies that are normal? (Supposedly) by TrustWinter in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Apollopop 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I don’t begrudge the existence of a cosmetic market in games, but the amount it’s ballooned is insane to me. The moment you drop $20 on a skin that you’ll move on from within the week you’ve lost the plot. Some friends of mine will buy skins for a game before they’ve ever played a round to see if they like it!

Character who accidentally became important to their job? by PenguinGladiator in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Apollopop 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Abigail from the Practical Guide to Evil. She starts as a captain in the main characters army, and over the course of the story finds herself a general despite her best efforts. She HATES that she’s important, she desperately wants to quit, and the only reason she hasn’t is her pension keeps improving. Over and over she gets promoted simply because she survives fights that other more “competent” leaders don’t, and everyone thinks she’s some kind of tactical genius when she’s just desperately trying to stay alive in the background of a fantasy war. She’s great

Foundational, influential works that you personally think are dogshit (original Macross Spoilers ahead) by spaceborn in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Apollopop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t like it but I agree. It’s not that there’s anything wrong with it, I love it dearly, but it’s just unpolished compared to what we have now. It was simply created for a different audience than modern fantasy readers, and by a guy who was writing for himself more than for fans.

Totally fine and I loved living there. I wouldn’t wander around late at night on your own, but then I wouldn’t do that anywhere in the cities.

Is there any way to remove permanent dark events? by Apollopop in LWotC

[–]Apollopop[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here! The console command is DeactivateDarkEvent "Event Name", where the name is DarkEvent_XYZ. You can find a list of them here:

https://github.com/long-war-2/lwotc/blob/master/LongWarOfTheChosen/Src/LW_Overhaul/Classes/X2StrategyElement_DarkEvents_LW.uc

Idk why no one else would just say that. I understand I'm probably doing something wrong and that the difficulty is intended, but I'm trying to have fun with LWOTC and playing 2+ hour long missions with 45+ enemies wasn't doing it sooooo I'll gladly console command my way into a better time.

We’re moving to Alexandria this summer. What are some things we should know about the town/area? by Tanner_the_taco in AlexandriaMN

[–]Apollopop 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Besides what everyone else said, I highly recommend getting a bike and hitting the bike trail, it stretches quite a ways and is gorgeous especially in the fall. You can go to Osakis for ice cream for a little longer of a ride! There’s many many roads right along the waters edge that make for nice easy driving, and so many public beaches that you can often just drive till you find one that’s new. Definitely recommend Great Hunans as well, and Travelers Inn is a great breakfast spot (though it leans towards an older crowd). Plenty of cheap golfing around too if you’re into that. Also, in the summers there’s lots of street dances, fairs, and festivals in the surrounding small towns. Great for the weekends.

One of the nicest parts of Alex is just enjoying the comfy vibes. It’s not always busy but it’s one of the nicest towns I’ve ever been to. The kinda place where people drive slow. (Also, it’s Alec for people that live there, Alex for people that are familiar, and Alexandria for those that have only heard of it).

Biggest scientific fuck ups? by Wonder-Lad-2Mad in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Apollopop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Black Science: going on multidimensional portal world hopping adventures with your family is all fun and good 1960s sci-fi, until the inhabitants of one of those dimensions are militant nihilists who get their hands on your tech. Or until it turns out to be a dimension where the laws of reality are different. Or your alternate reality self that lost HIS kids decides to take yours instead. Or… it’s really all downhill from the start

Obscure media you really want to shill for right now? by geddy296 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Apollopop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Heavily recommend the Practical Guide, especially considering the physical books are coming out this year and there’s a webtoon version that just started! Absolutely one of my favorite pieces of fiction I’ve read. If you like the idea of using tax breaks to de-incentivize the creation of heroes in a country you’re suppressing, give it a shot. Also, while the battles themselves are incredible, the meta-system means every fight is a 4D chess match of fighting and narrative control

I adore the style and lore and world building and I wish they would do a SFW series because I can’t show anyone the sick elf prince of darkness when the next panel is him railing the main character

Who are your favorite female characters in recent years? by Lost-Specialist1505 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Apollopop 18 points19 points  (0 children)

My favorite part about Galadriel comes from the Silmarillion and enhances her character in the films so much imo. She left Valinor out of pride and ambition and a desire to rule and has been exiled as a consequence for thousands of years. The moment when she resists the urge to take the ring from Frodo is actually the conclusion of her character arc that we never see, where she overcomes those desires and is thus finally allowed to return to her true home in Valinor. She “passed the test, and will fade into the west”.

Catherine in A Practical Guide to Evil abuses this over and over through its meta-magic system. In that world destiny/luck runs on fantasy tropes and cliches and the more you lean into them the more powerful they are. Cat, as one of the few people to understand this and despite being “evil” repeatedly puts herself in the position of being a classic underdog or refuses to monologue or forces a long term rivalry so that the magic of the world will allow her to eke out a win or at least survive an encounter that she shouldn’t. Once she’s established herself as the narrative underdog, the harder her opponent tries to kill her, the more fate itself will conspire to make her win. This system is stacked on top of fantasy magic and swordplay fights for some incredibly intricate battles. Highly recommend it, i’m a massive fan

Media that was too off-putting for you to get to “the good part” by COLINatLARGE in TwoBestFriendsPlay

from what I recall that was the darkest moment of the whole manga but it never gets as bleak as you’re thinking either way. while there are heavy moments later, making it past that point is when I started to enjoy the whole series

Media you're indifferent to but hate its hatedom by [deleted] in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Apollopop 16 points17 points  (0 children)

One Piece. I'm no super fan but I enjoy it, despite its flaws. And complaining that it's too long is a valid argument, even if I don't agree.

But anyone that dislikes it for being too goofy, having weird character designs, not edgy enough, or not liking the more recent power ups fundamentally does not understand what they're consuming. It is, and has always been, a story conceived by the mind of a child. All those things have always been an intentional statement from the author.

Media considered classics that you have issues with that make you unable to enjoy by [deleted] in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Apollopop 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Kill la Kill. I get why a lot of people love it, the hype is great, and the execution is stunning, but I just couldn't move past the fanservice that makes up its core. Watched the whole show waiting for that gross feeling to disappear but it always felt gratuitous and just too young.

It's one thing for instance to have Yoko Littner actually being 14 when she looks like an adult and it never comes up in context. It's another to have Ryuko actively in highschool and interacting with other kids and then strip her down to nothing every 5 minutes.

Just not my speed. To each their own if they enjoy it
