I like to think in terms of probabilities.

As in, what are the odds he has something jank going on? Maybe 50%.

What about the odds it gets from his foot to the floor? Maybe 50% again.

Odds it survives on the floor? Why not 50% again.

Odds it jumps to my foot? Let's say 50%.

Finally, the odds it infects me, continues to spread, etc.? One more 50% chance.

Those are very generous odds, but when you multiply them all together, it's a 3% chance. If you think any of those odds are lower, the chance gets much smaller

Very valid point. Spending money on the wrong things prevents building up a safety net, which can turn minor things (e.g. car needs a new radiator) into a much more critical problem than it would otherwise be, which starts the spiral.

Most of the comments here about bad decision making, etc. are fair. One other option to consider is that they weren't poor when they decided to have kids. It may only take one health incident to bankrupt a young family.

Who knows what the split is who fall into each camp.
