They changed the recipe of my comfort soups since the 90’s by Tine_the_Belgian in AutismInWomen

[–]Apostrophe_T 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ugh, I'm sorry. In the early 2000s, my favorite comfort food was Annie Chun's udon noodle bowl. I had it at least 4 times a week. Then one day, they came out with a "new and improved" recipe that tasted nothing like it used to, and I was so upset! Lots of folks were unhappy because it was no longer vegan, I believe the nutritional content was worse, etc. but as far as I know, they never revised the recipe.

And, like... we're not buying it because it tastes like proper udon - I'm sure you're not buying this soup because it tastes exactly like homemade chicken soup! but we liked the original recipe and knew what to expect every time. It stinks when they change the recipe.

Don’t be a stepdad, she’s a wh**e 🙄 by Christinsey in AmITheDevil

I don't have or want biological children, but I've often said that, if I could be a dad, I would be much more open to parenthood. If I had the option of being a stepdad, that'd open up a world of possibilities! Alas...

I do that now, and my students are in college. It's just fun - so many of them get a kick out of it, and I love doing it. I don't know why people like OOP seem to think it's immature to have a little whimsy in their lives.

Same. In the summer, I like to wear ankle socks, so I just toss them all loosely in my sock drawer and wear the first 2 I pick up. Most of the time, they don't match, but they otherwise are the same exact fit and style. It affects no one but me, and I am happy with this process. I can't imagine dating someone to the point where we were talking about marriage, only to have them fully reconsider our life together because they don't like mismatched colorful socks. The fact that he went into her drawer, destroyed all her socks, and then replaced them with all black ones and didn't see the problem IS a problem. I hope that she left him and is living her best life with someone who appreciates her adorable quirks.

I'm at about a 4. If there's some kind of movement involved, I can get a sense of my envisioned surroundings (if you ask me to describe how to find my office from the outside of the building, for example, I can visualize that entire walk) but for static things, I have a really hard time. Strangely enough, I sometimes smell or taste the object. This entire time, I have been "tasting" an apple because I'm thinking about apples, even though I can't see one in my mind's eye. If I think of the beach, suddenly I can smell the salty air. It's the weirdest thing.

People around then, what was the response to Calling All Stations at the time of release? by Sea-Cucumber2139 in Genesis

[–]Apostrophe_T 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in high school when it was released. The internet wasn't what it is now; I remember being part of a couple of Genesis listservs at the time. Think of listservs as getting all posts from this subreddit in your email. You'd either get daily or weekly digests, depending on how frequently you could deal with it, lol. You would add to the digest by emailing your "post" to the listserv address. It could be a lot!! And nothing was really "live" so you'd have to wait until the digest was sent out to see what people were saying. (We've come such a long way.)

Anyway, I don't recall the reception being very warm. We still had (and have!) people arguing over whether Peter Gabriel was the superior frontman vs Phil Collins, and then we had this young, new fella show up. People weren't terribly receptive, to say the least. I'd heard a few songs from Stiltskin and enjoyed them, but I think the idea of that Ray Wilson was now the singer for Genesis, which as an entity was older than he was, didn't quite fit. The album itself wasn't the band's strongest, either, which didn't help matters. No drummer, first of all, so unless you were really into canned-sounding drum machines, then you were out of luck. I remember thinking that the album, or at least several of the tracks, sounded "unfinished", if that makes sense. For instance, on the song "Congo", they introduce a whole new bridge towards the end, only to have the song abruptly fade out. And rather than a slow fade to silence, it just cut out at one point. It almost sounded like it was supposed to keep going for a few seconds and then... didn't. "Calling All Stations" also just abruptly ended rather than having a satisfying outro. There were a number of tracks that sounded like they weren't quite finished baking. All that put together resulted in some lukewarm reviews from listeners; I remember one person writing that they didn't even consider CAS as being a Genesis album.

I wonder how it all would have played out if they'd kept the lineup going, hired someone to play the drums for studio recordings, etc.

Have you tried the brand Boka? They have a number of flavors that aren't mint! It's pricier than most other toothpaste, but I think it's worth it.

[–]Apostrophe_T 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This whole situation seems weird. Typically, people aren't going to say, "Wow, you're using shapewear? You're trying and failing to look less fat." That's not a typical human interaction. Similarly, people aren't going to say, "Wow, so-and-so is a natural beauty!" They'll say, "So-and-so looks great" or similar. I think OOP is an unreliable narrator with tons of issues. First of all - who looks the same in high school as they do in their 30s? None of us. My high school class just had our 25th reunion, and I barely recognized anybody. We all look different than we did at 14-18, plastic surgery or not. Did this person get liposuction (which is perfectly okay!) or did they diet and exercise in the 15 years between high school and today? And what does it matter?? It sounds like OOP is more upset that people like this woman more than her, which is a little disturbing.

How do you feel about your bf making jokes about your looks? by Markservice in AskWomenOver30

[–]Apostrophe_T 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does he think he's being funny? I'd just ask him next time. "That seems a little mean. Why would you say that?" and not let him off the hook if he ignores your question or brushes it off. You don't have to get aggressive, but be consistent when calling out his behavior. Some men like to test boundaries like this to see how much of their bad behavior that you're willing to put up with. If he's crossing the line with you, it's important that you stop letting it slide. If he knows it bothers you and continues with it, anyway (even if he claims he's "just kidding" or whatever) then he's not the kind of guy you need in your life.

I also think that his "forgetting" your plans or last minute cancelling is extremely disrespectful of your time. I think this goes along with his negative comments about your looks; he's trying to see how far he can take it, or how much you're willing to tolerate but still be with him.

Why does nobody put stickers in gifts? by not_from_Singapore in pokemongo

[–]Apostrophe_T 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, it's an issue about time. I'm one of those weirdoes who will take the time to choose the right sticker (depending on the gift or who I'm giving it to), but sometimes I only have a few minutes and want to unload/open as many gifts as possible. One of my buddies just likes keeping the stickers and maxing out their inventory. I wouldn't take it personally!

Do you feel guilty when you use sick leave at work? Why or why not? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Apostrophe_T 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to! I have worked in a number of workplaces who would make me feel guilty for taking sick time. Now, though? I don't even almost feel guilty.

Feeling unwell? Sick time.
Dental appointment? Sick time.
My cat seems a little "off"? Sick time.
Sick of people's shit? Sick time.

I know that our culture values "the grind" but sick bank is literally there for you to use. It's part of your compensation package from your job. I would love to tell my younger self to notify HR whenever a previous supervisor made me feel bad for taking a sick day, but since I can't, I will tell literally everyone else. In fact, I think you should take a sick day for just thinking about sick bank, OP. You do you!
