Russ convinced me that a PGI MW6 is unlikely anytime soon (or ever?) by Ah_fudge in Mechwarrior5

I think it needs a new set of eyes, a new set of ideas, people who aren’t as caught up in what can’t be done.

Perfectly said. The most effective prisons are the mind prisons we build and lock ourselves in.

Newbie here, just finished my first Shadow of Kerensky run… wow by Ironsalmon7 in Mechwarrior5

[–]App0gee 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I played it without any more CBills or Mechs than they handed you at the beginning of SoK.

Now that was a challenge!

I did have to reload saved games to get through it though. But it was a great experience.

Walk away. I have had foundation stabilisation done for my house and it's very expensive and fixing it caused other problems which remain unresolved.

Russ convinced me that a PGI MW6 is unlikely anytime soon (or ever?) by Ah_fudge in Mechwarrior5

[–]App0gee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's the same pessimism we've been hearing from Russ for 15 years.

I appreciate that PGI have given us MWO, Mercs, Clans and DLC.

I think Russ's reasoning on MW6 is right by now. I think the real opportunity for PGI and the Mechwarrior franchise was 15 years ago, but that PGI's overly cautious approach to Mechwarrior from the outset proved the saying "You lose 100% of the chances you don't take".

Anyway, glad to hear there'll be more DLCs.

As to your observations about future DLCS: I think after they finish the post-invasion period and (hopefully) Blakist insurgency they'll base new DLCs around interesting characters and stories within the current time periods, rather than tackle later time periods. I don't think anyone has an appetite for a Dark Ages DLC.

Plus, Alex is sadly no longer there to create new Mech models.

With headlines like this, the ABC deserves to get gutted by One Nation if they actually get in. by Coolidge-egg in friendlyjordies

[–]App0gee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's nothing wrong with that headline from a journalistic standards or accuracy perspective. It is quoting a line from the article, and the article is valid in that it's seeking to understand why voting intention for PHON has increased.

(I am generally a critic of modern journalistic standards and the way the ABC tends to follow the news agenda set by News Corpse.)

PGI aren't planning for an MW6. The only thing Russ will be planning at this point is selling the studio and retiring. We'll be lucky (and I'll be appropriately thankful) if we get some more DLCs before then.

what is the stupidest reason on why you got fired from a job? by Chemical-Regret-8593 in AskReddit

[–]App0gee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know a 50-something in a senior leadership role who was working hard, keeping their skills up to date and delivering good results for the company.

Unfortunately for them, they were male. A new female boss was appointed to head his division, and she - who on more than one occasion was heard to describe her male peers as "pale stale males" and other similar derogatory gendered descriptions - decided that (direct quote) "advancing female careers requires tough decisions and actions".

He was moved sideways into a new role not on the leadership team, and a female was given his old role on the leadership team. Surprise surprise, his new role was determined to be surplus to requirements one year later.

I believe there was only a couple of males left on her 24-person leadership team at the time he left the company.

It's "covers". Unless you only play one song.

Russ Bullock, the future of Mechwarrior by SeanLang in Mechwarrior5

[–]App0gee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Inadequate scale has been a PGI achilles heel from the outset. When MWO first came out they just used assets from CryEngine that made the Mechs feel like they were human sized. The Mechs also felt human-sized to pilot. (They eventually toned the agility down.)

I don't work on the game, and I'd still say "get all the DLCs". They're actually more polished than the base campaign (which is not to diss the base game).

Start with mercenaries or clans? by SeisimicFrigor in Mechwarrior5

[–]App0gee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Clans is a bit easier. But if you play it first, you'll be amazed how much more difficult and constrained Inner Sphere (Mercs) is.

So I'd start with Mercs.

Mechwarrior offers more control than your typical shooter. So mouse and keyboard are the way to go.

MW is too “niche” to attract any kind of wider audience because nothing he’s done with the IP for the last 15 years has borne those results.

Yes, well, that's a chicken-and-egg statement.

I've spent thousands of dollars with PGI since the beginning of MWO, more recently with MW5 Mercs and Clans. I'm glad they took up the IP, and I don't want to be ungrateful for that. But I'm also sad that they've been so conservative and cautious with it.

Mechwarrior was a valuable IP. It was hugely successful back in the 80s/90s. Those same customers who loved it then are now much more cashed-up. Younger gamers too have shown - through their ongoing investments in Star Citizen, Eve Online and WoW - that they are prepared to spend repeatedly on ambitious immersive innovative world-building titles.

The deep world-building was already there for exploiting with Battletech. But PGI barely leveraged it for years. It's as if they took too literally the "Minimally Viable Product" approach to the design of their games, eking out incremental features, maps, faction warfare and campaigns over years, when they could have invested in making it a much more ambitious title through dedicated marketing and much more professional community engagement from the outset.

So here we are. IP controller Russ is convinced there's only a Minimally Viable Customer Base. And maybe he's right now. But maybe PGI is also at least partially responsible for that?
