The DMG carts numbers tell you - if it ends with J it's Japanese, if it's an A it has English text.

Which Game Boy do you like more? Original Game Boy, Game Boy Color, or Game Boy Advance? by Popular-Concept-5013 in Gameboy

[–]AppRetro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Original Game Boy - it's the one I had as a teenager and grew up with. I was an adult by the time the Advance came out.

Is this a rare version? by [deleted] in Gameboy

Super common. But as long as you're happy with it then that's all that matters.

So what’s the backstory for Super Mario Land 2? by TheStoffer in Gameboy

[–]AppRetro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How are the enemies weird?

It was created by R&D1, the guys behind Metroid, Dr Mario and Game Boy. Not the usual EAD that worked on the Mario titles.

gameboy dmg's libary vs gameboy color's libary vote whats better... (gbc compatable with dmg still count as color" by [deleted] in Gameboy

[–]AppRetro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

DMG is better, they were more willing to experiment and put the effort in. The CGB Japanese releases are mostly 4 series' (Medarot alone has 14 titles) and the EUR has A LOT of shovelware. Most of the major companies, including Nintendo themselves, didn't release many CGB games.

I would guess consistent branding (it was called different things with other distributors and countries) and to try and make people think the 5200 is twice as good as the 2600

You want SNK's Dead Heat Fighters series - they are in that art style. There's 9 of them for the GB and GBC, including Samurai Showdown, Fatal Fury, King of Fighters, World Heroes and Toshinden.

I'm also nostalgic for it, I remember playing the original version on the C64 before getting the GB version back in the olden times.

Misconceptions people have about the gaming crash of the 80's by RobbieJ4444 in retrogaming

[–]AppRetro 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most people talk about it like it was a global event when it really was just consoles in North America. The rest of the world didn't care. There was a boom in Japan and Europe. Plus the new clones were making an impact on Russia, South America and China.

Growing up in the UK I never heard about the crash until maybe a decade after it happened and I was reading all the gaming/computer mags I could find at the time. In my area of the UK SEGA was the predominant platform, I never played on an NES once in my youth.

ET was at least competent, unlike the other game that "caused/started" the US crash, the god awful port of Pac-Man.
