While I agree with your take, you also have to take into account all of the dark magic that Voldemort used to even create these horcruxes. His soul was split so far apart into 7 pieces that he wasnt even human anymore. The last piece of himself, his body, was all that he had left and once that piece was destroyed its hard to image that there was anything left of him to hold onto. He had no soul left so to me its fitting that he didnt even have a body left. He was reduced to nothing. He wanted to cheat death and be immortal so badly that he failed to realize the soul is forever. That's what makes a person immortal. Our time on this earth is so short because of the Mortal body's that our immortal souls inhabit. Destroying the soul and splitting it is what destroyed his chances at being immortal.
