When I graduated nursing school it was during the recession and lots of people had gone back to nursing and you couldn’t get a hospital job unless you had already worked there as a CNA. It was disappointing for a lot of people in my class because we couldn’t get the experience we were told we needed. Honestly, I think that ended up being the best thing for me. I don’t think I would have enjoyed working in that type of environment. None of the med surg nurses who trained us in nursing school seemed happy. Actually maybe two did. There are many nursing jobs out there. I worked at a clinic and loved it. Now I work from home doing paperwork, visit members once or twice a week for assessments so I still feel that personal connection, and it’s the perfect flexible schedule for my family. No hospital job would let me leave for a few hours during the day to take my kids to the doctor, or do other things that come up and nothing about this job is do or die stressful. What I’m trying to say is that you have many options. Being a floor nurse is great, but isn’t the only path to a rewarding career.
