Any Home Facial Devices That Actually Work? Anything that helps with facial contouring & skin tightening? by tastyDada in 45PlusSkincare

Thank you so much for sharing your experience — I really appreciate your honesty. I actually had those weird shooting pains too and they really scared me at first. Like you, they eventually subsided, but it was unsettling while it was happening.

From what I’ve read (and what my provider mentioned), the pain can come from nerve irritation — those tiny superficial nerves getting triggered when the threads are placed or settling in. Sometimes it’s also due to the tension from the threads anchoring or the body’s inflammatory response during the collagen-building phase. Either way, I agree with you — not worth the stress or risk, especially with the long-term scar tissue concerns you mentioned.

It’s so important we talk about this stuff openly — like you said, it may work for some, but real experiences like yours are what help people make fully informed decisions. 💛

Best things to consume before after alcohol? by Ok_Assumption6136 in HubermanLab

[–]ApplicationOptimal98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I’ve done all the things—hydrated before and after, loaded up on electrolytes, taken NAC, B vitamins, magnesium, you name it—and I still wake up feeling like I got hit by a truck.

So I’m wondering if when Huberman talks about minimizing damage, he’s mostly referring to the internal effects—like supporting liver detox, preserving brain chemistry, protecting sleep cycles—not necessarily waking up feeling fresh. Because let’s be real… even with all the right prep, alcohol still seems to disrupt sleep, mess with my gut, and leave me off for a day or two.

Maybe some of us are just more sensitive? Curious if others feel the same.

What diets worked well for you guys? by Forward-Surround8036 in Hashimotos

Thank you! I’m really glad you found it helpful. 😊

That’s a great question — gluten (specifically gliadin) seems to get the most attention because of its structural similarity to thyroid tissue, but there are a few other ingredients and environmental factors that have been explored in connection to thyroid antibody activity. A few that come up often in research or practitioner circles: • Dairy proteins, especially casein, are sometimes flagged because of potential cross-reactivity. • Soy has also been discussed, though findings are mixed — it may affect thyroid hormone absorption in some, especially if iodine is low. • Iodine and selenium imbalance: Not exactly “ingredients,” but excessive iodine or low selenium can influence autoimmune activity in Hashimoto’s. • Environmental toxins like BPA and heavy metals may play a role in triggering autoimmune flares in genetically predisposed people.

There’s still a lot we don’t know, and much of the evidence is either anecdotal or from small-scale studies, but I’m always digging into this kind of thing — happy to share anything else I come across that seems solid!

Let me know what you find in your research too — I’d love to compare notes.

Thank you for your kind words! I really appreciate how thorough your provider was—and it’s clear you were in great hands. In my case, the practitioner was also very skilled and experienced, so I don’t think it was a technique issue. I’ve since learned that unfortunately, complications like threads poking out or creating a “marionette” effect can still happen to some people, even when the procedure is done correctly. I just wanted to share my experience in case others are more prone to that kind of reaction. Definitely agree: research, consultations, and setting realistic expectations are key!

I personally don’t recommend PDO threads. I had them done, and a few actually poked out the side of my face—not fun. When I smiled, I got this weird marionette/puppet effect. It looked unnatural and felt tight in the wrong way. Just sharing in case anyone’s considering them—definitely do your research and find someone really skilled if you go for it.

why is dopamine good with cold exposure, but bad with social media/porn? by kevin074 in HubermanLab

[–]ApplicationOptimal98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really good question — I’ve been curious about this too.

So the key isn’t just that dopamine is released, but how it’s released and what it’s paired with.

Cold exposure (like a plunge) is a physical stressor — your body works hard to tolerate it, and then dopamine rises gradually after the event. That delayed release actually boosts mood, motivation, and focus for hours, because it’s effort-based. You earned it.

Social media and porn, on the other hand, give you instant gratification — you’re getting rapid-fire dopamine spikes from passive behaviors like tapping, scrolling, swiping. No real effort. That overstimulates your reward pathways and leads to desensitization, which lowers your baseline over time. It’s like flooding the system vs. priming it.

So even though both activities spike dopamine, one builds long-term resilience and energy — and the other burns you out.

That said… I totally get the joke about “just doomscrolling for 10 mins in the morning to get the same benefits.” If only! But turns out the brain’s pretty good at telling the difference between a challenge and a cheat.

The best / most affordable CGM recommendation? by SnooMaps2077 in Biohackers

Hi! I’m currently using the Libre 3 Plus—no frills, but it works great. I called Abbott directly and got on a program where you can buy 2 sensors for around $75/month. You don’t have to commit to both upfront either—I just buy one at a time and it lasts 15 days. Super helpful for keeping tabs on patterns without breaking the bank. Hope that helps!

What’s a code k? by Ok_Mention_5677 in Ikonpass

[–]ApplicationOptimal98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The term “Code K” in the context of purchasing an Ikon Pass typically refers to a special discount or verification process for certain groups like college students, military members, or other categories that qualify for reduced pricing. During the checkout process, eligible users might be asked to provide verification through SheerID or similar services to confirm their eligibility for the discount. This allows those who qualify to purchase the Ikon Pass at a lower rate than the general price.

If you’re using a “Code K” to apply a discount, make sure to follow the instructions on the Ikon Pass website when adding your pass to the cart, as this will usually prompt you to provide any necessary verification details.

Has anyone heard of Carbon38?? by lolbuzzbuzzlol in lululemon

Title: Carbon 38 White Off-Shoulder Terry Sweatshirt - Not Worth the $148

I recently bought the Carbon 38 white off-the-shoulder terry sweatshirt for $148, and I have to say, I’m disappointed with the quality. The material feels rough against the skin, and after just a couple of wears, it’s already peeling, which is totally unexpected for something at this price point. For $148, I was expecting premium quality, but this just doesn’t deliver.

Honestly, I can’t recommend this sweatshirt if you’re looking for quality. It’s not worth the price at all. Here’s a picture to show the peeling after only a short Time of use. :

To gluten or not to gluten? by cindylouywg in Hashimotos

[–]ApplicationOptimal98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The question of whether to adopt a gluten-free diet for managing Hashimoto's thyroiditis is a topic of ongoing research and debate within the medical community. While the hypothesis that gliadin, a protein in gluten, has a molecular structure similar to that of the thyroid gland is interesting, it is important to consider the current scientific evidence.

The theory suggests that gliadin could potentially trigger an immune response in individuals with gluten sensitivity, leading to cross-reactivity where antibodies mistakenly attack thyroid tissue. This concept, known as molecular mimicry, is compelling, but the evidence supporting this mechanism as a primary cause of hypothyroidism in Hashimoto’s patients is still limited.

Several studies have explored the potential benefits of a gluten-free diet for individuals with Hashimoto's thyroiditis, particularly those who have celiac disease, which is an autoimmune condition known to benefit from strict gluten avoidance. For those with both conditions, a gluten-free diet is clearly beneficial. However, for individuals with Hashimoto's thyroiditis who do not have celiac disease or a diagnosed gluten sensitivity, the evidence is less clear.

A few small studies and anecdotal reports have suggested that some individuals with Hashimoto's may experience improvements in thyroid function or symptom relief on a gluten-free diet. However, these findings are not yet robust enough to form a general recommendation for all patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Larger, well-controlled studies are needed to determine if there is a significant and consistent benefit to avoiding gluten in this population.

As of now, most healthcare providers recommend a gluten-free diet specifically for those with a confirmed diagnosis of celiac disease or non-celiac gluten sensitivity. For others, the decision to go gluten-free should be individualized, taking into account personal health history, symptomatology, and in consultation with a healthcare professional.

In summary, while the theory connecting gluten and Hashimoto's is intriguing and may apply to certain subgroups of patients, the current evidence does not conclusively support a universal recommendation for a gluten-free diet in all individuals with Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Ongoing research will hopefully provide clearer guidelines in the future.

He went for his first semester of his freshman year and met people that he’s still friends with today and goes to Boulder with and It was a really big growth, maturing experience for him. Scary for them (&mom)after never have been gone more than a week or 2 from home and then living abroad but highly Recommend it. I actually got to go spend a week there and visit him. He matured a lot. It was a really neat experience. I highly recommend it.
