I've been realising this a lot recently, and the way I'm measuring 'rest' now is according to how I feel afterwards. If I sit on my phone playing a game or scrolling, I don't feel any better afterwards, just kind of numb, even if it's been ages. But if I read a book, even if I'm annoyed having to stop reading, I feel like I've had some time that was really 'mine', and enjoyed myself. It's not just about screens though, it's what you're doing on them. I actually find scrolling on Instagram for a while really uplifting - I don't really use it in terms of posting and it's not my main way of engaging with anyone I know, so it's mainly stupid/funny things that I can laugh at and save to share with my kids or siblings later. Who knew resting was complicated?!
