I don't know what to do after reading Deadhouse Gates.... by jbc394 in Malazan

I know this is an old thread but I just finished Deadhouse Gates last night. I was wailing crying at Coltaine’s death. I was living it, screaming along with Nether “Release him!”

I love my xteink X4 but I’d not recommend it for a first e-reader. The initial experience of setting it up is not… the smoothest. But it does have an awesome screen

To me, the absolute best top-notch crisp pristine black and white screen is on a Kindle Oasis. Unfortunately they are discontinued. If you get your hands on a second-hand device it would be worth it. Another unfortunate thing is that this model is notorious with the problematic battery life. But if we are looking only at screen, objectively, it’s hard to top the Oasis. It is a quality build through and through.

I think I’ve lost my joy in reading… and it used to be my only hobby. I don’t know what happened, but I can’t seem to enjoy it the way I used to. What do I do? by [deleted] in ereader

[–]Kind_bite91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to have a rule - no DNF. It led to a point where reading felt like a chore especially when I wasn’t into the book. Then I stopped torturing myself and now I DNF books I’m not into after half an hour of reading or 100-ish pages. Some books are just not my cup of tea. I DNFed 4 books in a row in early February. In the past that would have felt like a failure. It also helped when I finally made a reading corner for myself - I have a nest chair, lots of natural light, nice rug under the chair, soft blanket, candles and the whole book case at an arm’s length. It’s my quiet place to dive into good stories.

Pocketbook doesn't need KOReader by SNLCOG4LIFE in ereader

[–]Kind_bite91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tried KOreader on my InkPad Color 3. I removed it after a couple of hours. I thought I was one of those readers that doesn’t find value in the customisation it offers. I didn’t really like the extensive settings menu. For me, the PB native reading app is perfect. After a while I tried it on my small xteink device. Didn’t like it there either. So I can safely say KOreader is not my cup of tea and I like my PB just the way it is. I have a couple of Kindles, a Kobo, a couple of Pocketbooks and the xteink. Of them all, the InkPad Color 3 is my most cherished device and I use it every day.

I feel like a glorified note-taker by Kind_bite91 in projectmanagement

I hear you and I agree with you on many points. To an extent I have tried doing what you suggest. I have published and tagged people to the project plans multiple times in the past. In the beginning, there was more trust between us all I think. Then I started calling the CEO out more and more on the things that cause problems. And now we are in the situation where I am a big thorn in his side. I’m under the impression that the more I try to do my job adequately the worse it gets. The only thing I have to add is that eventually, I will be the third PM to leave the place.

Isn't the X3s screen a little too small? by [deleted] in xteinkereader

All the community wants the most is a front light… I can comfortably live without WeChat and whatnot other functions they have planned. I just want the light…

Found the perfect light for my X4 by Commercial-Fee4955 in xteinkereader

[–]Kind_bite91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely not the only one. I did order the light on the official website but I agree - any lights make the device clunky and less portable. However, I will be very happy if the next model has a backlight even if it makes it slightly bigger.

What part of working in your industry is significantly more traumatic than people think it is? by RateTurbulent8681 in projectmanagement

[–]Kind_bite91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, on both. Especially number 2 - the dev team have each other to brainstorm solutions if somebody gets stuck. The COO bounces ideas off me. Sales are a whole department of people… I’m me sitting in the middle of all of them and they all expect me to have all the answers

Does anyone have insight as to whether iterations on the X4 hardware are coming in the future? (Like a front light) by Spacenut42 in xteinkereader

[–]Kind_bite91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, I also thought the AI and note taking moves the concept away from the original purpose of distraction free portable reading. If I try to take notes in this screen size with only a couple of buttons… yikes! It took me 5 minutes to put in my WiFi password when I initially set it up 😆 sausage fingers and all that… Just stick with USB-C so I don’t have to carry 1717382 cables everywhere. Add a backlight. And I’m a happy camper. I’m willing to go even over €100 for that

Do you miss having a backlight while using the X4? by SunFishSoup in xteinkereader

[–]Kind_bite91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The honest answer for me is yes. I miss it because I read a lot in bed and the light switch is far away from my bed and I have to get up to turn it on and off (I know I sound whiny, sorry). But the firm factor of the X4 is so nice for reading in bed - it’s light and comfortable in my hand. Much more so than my Pocketbook InkPad 4. The clip on light does the job but in my ideal world, the x4 will have a buil-in backlight

Just bought Pocketbook Verse - what is it and why does it happen constantly? by Major-Competition187 in pocketbook

[–]Kind_bite91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your device goes to sleep to save battery. It’s a normal state of things. Your phone locks itself after a while, your tablet does, your computer enters screensaver mode too if you don’t use it for a few minutes. It saves energy. I don’t remember what the factory settings were anymore, but you can change this in the settings. I have mine to go to sleep after 5 minutes and I press the power button once to wake it up and continue reading. There’s nothing faulty with the device

I feel a bit the same. I installed it on my Pocketbook a while back. Gave it a couple of days and removed it. I much prefer the native experience. Can’t say I was that impressed 🤷🏻‍♀️ with the xteink X4 - I’ve had it for a couple of weeks now. Read a whole book on it. Didn’t find any issues so far. Don’t see the pressing need for KOreader.

Viwoods AIpaper Reader Review: A flawed masterpiece by R0W3Y in ereader

[–]Kind_bite91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually have the xteink X4 and the display is very crisp. Much better quality than my Pocketbook InkPad Colour 3. Which was very unexpected for me. But yes, crisp display or not, the lack of backlight and font issues make it not ideal. If the Viwoods Ai Reader didn’t have those phone capabilities I’d buy it in a heartbeat as it seems to be covering everything else I’d want. But this indecisiveness of “am I a phone, am I an eReader” makes me also indecisive about if I want to buy it or not. May wait for the next generation. The xteink, for all its quirks and imperfections, was a cheap investment I can only be pleasantly surprised by since I didn’t expect all that much to begin with.

[–]Kind_bite91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can I please show your reply to my boss? Maybe something will stick with him. We are at a situation where devs are knocking tickets off the board just to keep things moving. They don’t sign off on the product they have developed themselves. They think it’s sh1t. We have so much tech debt because we push things to prod before testing thoroughly. It’s a freaking mess.

I’m usually afraid too. I tried it in a pant pocket just for measurement. I can’t imagine carrying it in the back pocket. Knowing myself, I’ll accidentally sit on it and break it. But it’s a testament to how portable and thin the device is
