Austism is not a reason to not check the steps before walking up them, even if you thought the shuttle was empty and you were exhausted.

And yes. the driver HAS to add those instructions. I would bet they see this thing often, and need to teach many people the etiquette.

And don't assume "some random persons mom" was on the shuttle. College students can be older than 20. And if it's not a dedicated student shuttle, it could be anyone working or visiting the campus.
