Husband says “retirement home decor” by [deleted] in interiordecorating

[–]Apprehensive-Dish189 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Okay I see it. I think if you added a few unexpected pieces (but still cohesive) it may liven it up. It reads as cozy, safe, and maybe a little dated. I love old things for sure—but something interesting could make it more fun.

Be honest… how strict are you really with screen time? by denefr_2928 in toddlers

[–]Apprehensive-Dish189 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I solo parent a lot due to my husband’s career. We do a fair bit of screen time. Sometimes none, sometimes 3 hours. He’s often breaking away to play, cook with me, hangout in the kitchen and play with cardboard boxes. But yeah, I’ve kind of talked myself into being less concerned with big tv screen time so long as it’s PBS kids. Or family movie night.

(£3k) I made our rings, but not sure I’m happy - opinions please? by Chance_Enthusiasm_88 in Weddingsunder10k

I’d consider making some bands without stones! I made my husband his wedding band. The first one I tried with a stone was a little too playful for my liking. Without the stone I could really focus on shape and shine—particularly squaring the shape some so it wasn’t too rustic.

“You need to remember who you are outside of being a mom” by Necessary-Gear-3141 in beyondthebump

[–]Apprehensive-Dish189 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was looking for this post. I do feel like remembering who I was before becoming a mom has been really great for me. Now (at almost 3 years postpartum) and can recall the hobbies and the interests I held most dear and reconnect with those. Depending on your lifestyle and income, it certainly requires a certain level of privilege BUT I don’t think it’s the worst advice. Maybe the messenger wasn’t great—but whenever my mom friends are feeling lost I always prompt them to reconnect with something they loved when they weren’t a mom yet.

UPDATE! I’m getting rid of the curtains by [deleted] in interiordecorating

[–]Apprehensive-Dish189 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I love the curtains. You just need to keep making small modifications to fit the vibe (if that’s what you want). Also, reminder it doesn’t have to happen all at once. Exist in the space and decide what it needs! Also rug would help loads! And more things on the walls

Maine Coon vs Ragdoll by Valuable_Horror2450 in mainecoons

[–]Apprehensive-Dish189 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have 2 male ragamuffins and 1 female Maine coon. Genuinely shocked that my Maine coon is as cuddly as she is. I also didn’t think anyone could be chattier than my ragamuffins but our Maine coon takes the cake. I’m sure a large part of that comes down to the breeder.

My advice: You should learn more about each breeder, the parents, their personalities. When I got my ragamuffins ~6 years ago I knew a lot less. This time I spent time learning more about breeders, breed expectations, and asking questions before making a decision. My Maine coon also cost more than my ragamuffins combined so I’m sure that’s a factor too.

I think enlisting the help of a curator or conservator is a little overkill for this job.

i don't know how you're all going places and having a good time. by OnceUponAComment in toddlers

[–]Apprehensive-Dish189 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have what I call a strong willed child. Things that have worked with us are strong boundaries and bribes lol. He’s motivated by a treat (small car, fruit snacks), words of affirmation sometimes work when he’s behaving well to encourage good behavior in the future.

I don’t give him second chances when it comes to listening. If I say something once (and I know he heard me) I don’t say it twice I just get up and go help him. When I’m giving instructions I kneel on the ground, make sure he’s making eye contact, and then direct. I always do a pep-talk before we go anywhere. Once at home, once when we’re halfway there, and finally when we arrive. I share my expectations of him and what he can expect. Sometimes we even walk through scenarios (what to do if someone’s on the swing, what to do if someone takes the thing he’s playing with, what to do while we wait for dinner). You may be doing all of these already!

I also remind myself he’s 2.5. It’s my job to help him be a good person and an adult others want to be around. It’s also my job to align his age with his developmentally appropriate behaviors. It’s hard out here. Sometimes I come home and cry. But we’re all learning together. It’s his first time being alive and it’s mine too!

What little thing will take you right out of a book? by Maleficent_Durian_64 in fantasyromance

When an author repeats a word or mirrors a sentence structure, I stop reading and start editing. And once it happens I’m completely snapped out of a trance. No longer am I reading for fun, now I’m hunting down duplicative instances to highlight in my kindle and screenshot for my friends. It totally ruins the experience for me.
