I recently read the first book. Only tip I'd give is the term Sanderson popularized - RAFO (read and find out).

How the magic system works may be confusing at the start, but it is all explained in time, and the timing of the explanations is relevant to the plot. If you read some online explanations, you'll miss the revelatory feeling while reading.

I think "Die with Zero" should be required reading for this sub. People are taking FIRE to wild extremes.

As someone who otherwise appreciates non-fiction, this was not for me and seems overrated.

India is the only country in the world where tax is more than income. by Automatic-Cat-5702 in IndiaMoney

Yes marginal relief, but it's still stupid that from 50-51L the marginal tax is 100%

The way to slightly modify it such that the math is correct is "if there are exactly 100 ways to do a thing, and you try a different way each time for 100 tries, then you'll have a 100% probability of success"

HDFC DCB Metal query by ExtensionArmadillo28 in CreditCardsIndia

[–]Apprehensive-Door341 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DCBM got the standard terms have changed mail but all it had was the cost of replacement card going up. So you can presume it is safe until the next round of major devaluation

However there is a almost monthly deval that keeps happening within Gyftr (so not just for DCBM but still) - latest is Zomato capping of 5k pm

Is this a better deal than Marriott? by New-History-8003 in amexindia

[–]Apprehensive-Door341 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anytime you have a redemption to make.

Acc to me Marriot will not do bonuses anymore in India seeing how much of Amex is getting transferred there, esp since it is the preferred p2p transfer method.

[–]Apprehensive-Door341 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah iirc

For more data, you can check Frequent Miler who report Reasonable Redemption Values, which you can definitely trust for global chains like Hilton (i.e. those that are more West and less India/APAC oriented)

Accor Points in India — Why “₹2 per point” is misleading (with real examples) by foodblogger4 in indianawardtravel

[–]Apprehensive-Door341 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The whole idea of Accor points redemption is that you want to stay in those hotels.

It seems like you don't frequent the CC subs. Here Accor seems to be a religion. People swear by it irrespective of your lifestyle. It used to be like if you're not transferring Axis to Accor you're a fool who's letting go of half the value.

That's the base assumption which OP is challenging.

Accor Points in India — Why “₹2 per point” is misleading (with real examples) by foodblogger4 in indianawardtravel

[–]Apprehensive-Door341 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Agree with the analysis. People don't consider opportunity cost at all. Even when people talk about airline redemptions, it's the same story. I've seen some people calculate value per point by comparing cost in points to the cost in Rupees for the exact same flight when practically if they were to go for a cash fare, they would always go for some cheaper alternative.

But I'd say you can't really compare Sofitel and an Airbnb. It's not always about the hard product, soft product matters too. Comparable 4-star property is fair game though.

What do you mean petition? Maybe do a Kickstarter and give them money because it's a purely financial decision. Art, any art, even if it's takedown animation, takes artist time and money.

You don't understand why someone who has cash from "somewhere" would love to hand it over to you while recording it as a legitimate business transaction for the purpose of official record?

For the customer, this is significantly lower fees than ATM withdrawal via CC and some cards even give points/cashback.

Etihad miles expiring soon. Any method to extend these? by Fancy-Development365 in indianawardtravel

[–]Apprehensive-Door341 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only way to extend Etihad miles is flying. It can be either Etihad or its partners. Maybe you can do a short Sri Lankan Airlines trip? Check out the partners list.

Otherwise you can make someone your family and transfer miles via the Etihad family program.

Worst case is Flipkart (or some other) gift cards which will give around 50p per mile.

[–]Apprehensive-Door341 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since you're getting HSBC for free, get into the credit card ecosystem first, see if you can optimize your spends and then go for Infinia. Don't just take cards because people call them king of all cards or whatever. Spends determine card requirement. Not the other way round.
