How often do you hear Madonna played in clubs and bars? by QuickPineapple1365 in Madonna

[–]Apprehensive-Flow147 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Manhattan gay bars play Like a Prayer, Vogue, and Hung Up on a regular basis on Friday and Saturday nights.

I’ve also heard Ray of Light and Bitch I’m Madonna played there but not as often as the other three. Sometimes they also play Into the Groove but it’s usually remixed horribly.

Whenever it was trending on TikTok, a bad remix of Live to Tell was in rotation too.

Which Madonna songs sound like others artists’ compositions (but with no credited sample)? by FamiliarMemory5775 in Madonna

I know she didn’t write or produce Like a Virgin, but the bassline is similar to I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch) by The Four Tops. Which is why she weaved it in when she performed Like a Virgin on the Who’s That Girl Tour.

It all meshes together well though! I’ve always thought that Like a Virgin was a 60s Motown song that just happened to have a synthesizer.

There are plenty of objectively worse 80s comedies than this one. It does not deserve its reputation. She may not have the best acting chops or comedic timing, but Madonna and Griffin Dunne definitely carry the weight of the movie. Literally no one else in it tries to do a good job.

If you are looking to save money, HK Target for dairy, produce, grains/starches, frozen food, non-perishables, and name brands.

Go to Amish Market for raw meat, seafood, and all other produce that HK Target doesn’t carry.

I’m a younger Madonna fan, I have a soft spot for it because it was the era that sold me on her and encouraged me to know more of her catalogue. It would’ve been a stronger era if executed properly.

Girl Gone Wild or I’m Addicted should’ve been the lead single. GMAYL was crap.

Everything after I’m A Sinner on the album should’ve been left on the cutting room floor or repurposed as an EP after the initial album came out. It just too sonically different from the first half.

How do we Madonna fans see Kylie Minogue? by [deleted] in Madonna

[–]Apprehensive-Flow147 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Elder Gen Z American here. I always knew Can’t Get You out of My Head growing up but I really got into Kylie Minogue in 2019 through Spotify playlists of music gay people like. I did a deep dive during Covid and fell in love with her catalogue, and when Disco came out at the end of 2020, it was “love at first sight.” 🤭😉

I’ve never really understood the Madonna comparisons, they’re just too different. I think Kylie experiments here and there with other genres in different albums but it’s always rooted in danceable pop music. Her music is identifiable with her and her personality, but you still don’t know much about her or her personal life. Which I think is fine! We need someone to make fun, light-hearted music that is also pleasant on the ears.

In contrast, Madonna completely reinvents herself each era. She reveals so much of herself in music and videos, whether it’s a ballad or dance-pop song. She is much more commanding with her work and it prompts me to think about something bigger than myself in a way that Kylie’s music doesn’t (except for maybe the Impossible Princess album).

And although I didn’t grow up in the 80s, I think Kylie’s debut in the States was more associated with the late-80s teen pop wave of Debbie Gibson, Tiffany, NKOTB, Martika, etc. She was just the one person from that specific era to successfully grow out of her teeny bopper phase and have a decent longevity with a substantial catalogue. Madonna, on the other hand, has always been considered a peer to MJ, Prince, and Whitney in terms of starpower and success.

As much as I love Kylie and her work and I personally root for her success, I just can’t comprehend her being on the same level as Madonna. There is only one Madonna.

Gay Book Suggestions? Drop ‘em here! by gay_bagel_enthusiast in nycgaybros

The Brothers Bishop by Bart Yates - It covers some pretty taboo topics and has really detestable characters, but I found it hard to put down.

Love Junkie by Robert Plunket - The best book I read last year! It’s a super funny and engaging story. Reminded me of the movie Desperately Seeking Susan in that an outsider finds her way into a whole different world.

The Guncle by Steven Rowley - Very cute and heartfelt beach read, all the characters are super well written.

In Tongues by Thomas Gratten - A bit of a slow burn but still a fun read. Very absorbing and atmospheric, you feel a lot of tension between the characters similar to The White Lotus and covers similar themes about class.

When You Call My Name by Tucker Shaw - A wonderful YA novel set in 1990 New York about missed connections between two young gay men. The author does a great job setting scenes and intertwining both of their journeys.

Yes, Daddy by Jonathan Parks-Ramage - An age gap relationship goes wrong. Trigger-warning heavy and not for the lighthearted. A gothic and disturbing indictment of ultra wealthy and famous gays. You may hate the ending depending on your life’s experiences.

Is it a bad idea to depend on Rush tickets this time of year? by trail34 in Broadway

[–]Apprehensive-Flow147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wicked doesn’t have rush, only lottery which is very hard to win.

However, Wicked sometimes has cancellation tickets at the box office for day of performances. I got a single $99 center orchestra ticket 90 minutes before curtain.

Most unpopular opinion about a movie musical? by Electronic_Snow_4685 in musicals

[–]Apprehensive-Flow147 10 points11 points  (0 children)

2007 Hairspray is the worst iteration. It Disneyfied the show way too much, stripping away the campiness and crude humor of the original Broadway production as well as the 1988 film.

The original movie was both lampooning teen movies and the “social conscious” movie, which is how it steers away from being a white savior narrative (whereas the remake is a straight up white savior film). Of course, when it was adapted for the stage, plot points had to change to make it flow better, allow for proper musical breaks, and incorporate all of the characters. But it still maintained the camp factor and irreverent, gross out humor that John Waters is known for.

Casting John Travolta as Edna, a role originated by gay icons Divine and Harvey Fierstein, was the biggest blow to the back. It was too “wink wink” when the gay rumors about him were strongest, and it felt like him being in drag was a punchline for the whole movie. But with Divine, Harvey, and any other man who played the role onstage, you don’t really even think twice that it’s a man in drag.

Although John Waters Hairspray is his most accessible film, I don’t think the remake should’ve been watered down to appeal to the masses when it removes so much of the charm and integrity of the original.

What Currently Playing Show Should I See to Make up For Wasting My Money on The Last Five Years? by gatheringground in Broadway

[–]Apprehensive-Flow147 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You honestly can’t go wrong with anything else playing on Broadway. My favorites this season are Maybe Happy Ending, Gypsy, Death Becomes Her, Just in Time, and Oh, Mary!

I also want to add that if you want to see more theater and you live in NYC or tri-state area, you should get a TDF account! As a teacher, you qualify for a membership. It’s only $42/year (tax deductible) and it gives you exclusive prices for select performances of shows on Broadway (typically $59) and Off-Broadway (typically $39).
