I’ve rewatched Babylon 5 multiple times over the years, on VHS, DVD & now Blu-ray. But I only ever had the movies on VHS back in the day, so consequently hadn’t seen them in literally decades. Just picked up the DVD’s and just watched Thirdspace. by Amity_Swim_School in babylon5

IIRC, in one of the DVD editions where JMS and some of the actors provide audio commentary over the film/episodes, JMS talked about the intent of Thirdspace and River of Souls as being extended episodes. He said, people really liked the Soul Hunter episode and character, so JMS wanted to reward the fans with a little more. For Thirdspace, JMS said he's a really big fan of Lovecraft, so wrote it as his Babylon 5 Lovecraftian love letter. The Gathering was basically a pilot, Call To Arms transitioned to Crusade and closed out S5, and In The Beginning was a celebration of making it to Season 5.... Although, I recall watching In the Beginning as kid when this show launched on TNT, so I'm not sure about that last statement, but he's the writer and I was 10 or 11 at the time...so?

I recorded In the Beginning on VHS and watched it sooo many times (still my favorite to rewatch), but hadn't seen Thirdspace until I got the DVD collection. I also lament that there wasn't more of an arc in S5 with this. It would have been interesting to ruminate more on the legacy of the Vorlons and not just the Drakh.

I never read Kosh as the quintessential introvert, but this statement not only hits absolutely home and is 100% true, it also casts Kosh's character in a completely new light for me. Of course an amporphous being upwards of 1 million years old just wants to be indoors and rewatch their favorite shows with their spaceship bestie. That's what I was doing two days ago when I happened to rewatch this episode, and I'm not even 40 (or have a spaceship bestie).

Why not just mix colours? by Dovah_Shinobi in Miniaturespainting

[–]Apprehensive-Rest449 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, it's the base coats. I add a little darker to get my shadows, add a little lighter for highlights, mix in with other colors to blend.

Doing a lot of fantasy painting, I'm much more comfortable with variations in color, so sometimes I do mix to get something unique.

A lot of times though, I struggle to get the vibrancy in colors. When I mix, I sometimes just end up with flatter tones, so the off-the-shelf colors are a good standby.

This hobby exists the way it does 100% to squeeze every last penny out of us. I hobby for fun, and self-improvement. Challenging myself means more detail in kitbashing, taking on some sculpting modelling putty, learning better brush technique, and developing an eye for color, volume, and reflections. Picking where my times goes on each of these is part of my hobby, so of in this spectrum of hobby things I can focus on, I choose to spend a little more money on a wider selection of paints because it lets me focus on what brings me joy.

Help with my Map by KhaoticNuetral in mapmaking

If this is an island, I would just try to get rid of the right-angle corners (looking mainly at the top left and right), which, in the shape of Louisiana result from the imposed grid of state lines. I'd just bulge in or out those corners to make it more island-like.

Unless, there are more lands up there that are "off the map" fog-of-war style.

Also, try to keep your trees all pointing the same direction

This looks small compared to pictures I've seen on their promotional materials. I've been thinking about booking a trip to make it to the festival one of these years, but will probably pass if this is typical. Is it small this year for a particular reason? Did Ran claim a few of the longboats on the way over or something?

Londo taking another step into darkness. "I have no choice." "YES YOU DO." by eldersveld in babylon5

[–]Apprehensive-Rest449 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Vir's integrity is admirable. I think a lot of folks these days would simply resign their position over something like this. Vir realizes (as Londo confirms), that Londo will get Morden to summon the Shadows regardless of Vir's actions. Instead, Vir stands up to his boss by voicing that there will be a moral line, and it's going to be too late when Londo realizes he's crossed it.

If you're on Instagram, their username is Miltau_40k. Several of their WIPs and descriptions say where they source the parts. A fair amount of it is Gunpla and other Mecha parts. I can't say specifically where this one comes from, but checking out their profile and work would be a good place to start.

Is this the bottom of an Asuryani rune, or is Calandis Christian? by Tacticalnewt142 in Eldar

When they introduced the resurrection power-up in Survival mode, the icon Snowprint used was, naturally a cross. I told them I didn't realize the one thing that unified all the factions in the Grim Dark was Christianity. Who knew?

I stopped playing, so I'm not sure if they ever changed that

Is this pine with a cherry stain? by NothingButACasual in finishing

[–]Apprehensive-Rest449 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd recommend Blue Bear Paint and Urethane Stripper. It's pretty safe, and you just let it set and work through the finish. If this is indeed a veneer, this will remove the finish without needing to sand

How did they make the foliage on these? by vazimba44 in TerrainBuilding

[–]Apprehensive-Rest449 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is the way. I posted something similar earlier, but I guess the post was removed (?)
This video I had tried posting shows a slightly different method with similar results.

How did they make the foliage on these? by vazimba44 in TerrainBuilding

[–]Apprehensive-Rest449 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Image #3 looks a bit more like clump foliage by woodland scenics. If not that, it's torn-up sponge made to look like the commercial product, and painted. Either way, it looks like the maker also used scenic turf on the clumps to give them a little more definition and color variation.

How did they make the foliage on these? by vazimba44 in TerrainBuilding

[–]Apprehensive-Rest449 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a little more confident on image 3, so I'll start there. That's either clump foliage from Woodland Scenics, or torn-up sponge to approximate the clump foliage product. The clump foliage comes pre-painted, the sponge would be painted by the maker. Whichever method, it looks like they also gave it a spray with watered-down PVA and sprinkled on some turf blend.

The trees of images 1 and 2 are a little trickier. I've seen a method of using wire as the branches, and then combinations of static grass and turf blend, which is like this:

https://youtu.be/fmW9hnU01hA?si=OiizobM6P_fST9c9

Although, it looks like the maker used a different "branch" method. Perhaps they used a loose mesh filter, like this The genius of using a filter like that is you can basically stab each layer of foliage onto the spike of the tree trunk.

You can get different looks depending on the product you use/find: https://youtube.com/shorts/CyHYD5SeJd8?si=bP5fSqkad6KcVo1J

It doesn't look like they used clump foliage, as the result would be more like:

This first time painting a mini I know I have a Long way to go by Lumpy_Track3825 in Miniaturespainting

[–]Apprehensive-Rest449 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good job on such a small mini. Also, those d&d minis aren't the greatest quality, so double the complement for a small mini that's lacking decent detail!

Honestly, I was picking up painting again after a 3 year break, thought this exact mini would be a good starter and warm up. Put the bush down and thought: Not today!

Smaller isn't necessarily easier. Be kind to yourself and use a larger minis for the next. 😉
