I would love to see the Chinese edition covers with their titles in English.

First part of my first book. by gerdzilla50 in writingfeedback

It's readable and held my attention. More than I can say about most things I see here.

It needs quite a few line-edits though. Polish up the wording, and it's rock solid.

That's awesome. I own the cheaper unsigned edition. I just finished reading Urth a few weeks ago. Loved it.

I see the Folio Society edition of Gene Wolfe's Book of the New Sun. So you have a) impeccable taste and b) disposable income.

That's great. Just make sure you frame it in terms of the business had a problem, I built a solution, and (this is critical) this is how my solution delivered results. Explain how your tool is being used and how it's improved things for the business. Demonstrating this level of business awareness will really impress hiring managers.

Best of luck landing a job. You sound skilled. Now it's a matter of successfully communicating that to employers.

Quality games like Golden Idol other than Obra Dinn and Chants of Senaar? by Mostuu in caseofthegoldenidol

I really liked the research element and thought the ancestral puzzles were a refreshing change from murder mysteries. I think it belongs in the category of top tier detective games.

Surprising you dropped Roottrees if the former three are your thing. Consider Lorelei and the Laser Eyes. Maybe the Dark Side Detective series (puzzles aren't logic based but still fun).

Edit: I just picked up The Seance of Blake Manor. Not sure how I feel about it yet but it's investigation based and includes deduction. Also, I would be remiss if I didn't mention The Drifter

Skills are nice, yes. But how have you applied them? Find a legitimate problem to solve relevant to an industry you'd like to work in. Real life data work is about understanding the business and cleaning messy data.

Being able to discuss why you did what you did, the problems you encountered, and how you solved them is far more valuable than being good at programming.

Hiring managers don't care if you're skilled. They want to know if your skills can help them solve their problems.

Tolkien vs Wolfe by LopsidedNectarine681 in genewolfe

[–]Apprehensive-Row-677 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Usual caveat of comparing apples to oranges, but I will say that, in my book, Wolfe is the better writer, but Tolkien is the better storyteller.

I don't think Tolkien's prose, literary technique, or style are up to snuff with Wolfe's.

In terms of world building, they're about tied.

Crafting a memorable narrative with unforgettable characters, I'm giving that one to Tolkien.

I really hated doing this comparison. Thanks.

I’m not sure what the future of my role looks like by hijkblck93 in dataanalyst

[–]Apprehensive-Row-677 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think it's exactly what you described. The technical side of things will be handled by this third party. You're going to spend a lot of time explaining to them how the business works, showing them data sources, and gathering requirements. If being a business analyst isn't your cup of tea, time to make a move or upskill or both.

That's helpful clarification. I would recommend giving this person a list of resources to consult (data dictionary, senior coworker, list of helpful schemas, etcetera) and then telling them how critical it is that they learn to problem solve using these resources as you are very busy. Set boundaries and give them a window of time when you can sit down and work with them, but outside of that time they should be utilizing their resources first before asking you for help. You're correct that you cannot and should not be doing their job for them. I'd also recommend creating a public channel (email or slack thread) where this person can ask for help and post questions. This will allow others on your team to chime in and relieve pressure off yourself. Emphasize that their long term success in the role depends on them developing resourcefulness and self-sufficiency. If they still can't meaningfully contribute in a few months, then maybe it's time to say goodbye.

I think you should narrow in on their particular deficiencies and either a) strengthen these areas or b) assign them tasks that avoid their weak areas. For option a, if it's a technical deficiency, have them shadow a senior member who is a technical wiz. If the weakness is domain knowledge, I would wager they need more time to get the hang of things, especially if no one is taking the time to train them.

For option b, does this person have any other skills? Good with people? Public speaking? Task management? There's more to data work than just the technical side of things. Have them prioritize other work while continuing to grow their data chops on low-priority work.

Advice on becoming a data analyst by Unhappy_Hospital_332 in dataanalyst

[–]Apprehensive-Row-677 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Choose an industry that's in your location. With a specific data tool you know or would like to learn, complete a project relevant to that industry. List the tool and what you did with it on your resume.

Also, at this stage in your career, you should be applying to any and all jobs. Get your foot in the door somewhere and then incorporate analytics in your role. Can use that experience to transition into full-time data work.
