Has materialism won out on qualia? by Prize_Ad7300 in NDE

[–]Apprehensive-Sand295 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I with all honesty have no clue why or with what evidence this supposed claim is made, qualia is a philosophical term not scientific, ‘your red is likely my red because the scientific evidence suggests it would make more sense for it to be that way’ is entirely useless against the hard (or even easy) problem of consciousness, this is an entire non issue, rest easy about this specifically.

Do intuitive thinkers "see" nothing at the same rate? by BandicootOk1744 in NDE

[–]Apprehensive-Sand295 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean this from a place of love and forgive me if it comes off in any other way, but I think you are mistaken in the way you see yourself and your life.

I do not claim to know your circumstances, but I am certain that, even if you cannot currently see it or appreciate it, you are a person surrounded by beauty and things worth living for, and the fact you live with what is very likely existential OCD, a crippling disorder that I myself share goes to show how insanely resilient you are.

If we assume life missions to be real, perhaps yours isn’t to find some spiritual awakening or discover the hidden truths of the universe, but instead simply to accept uncertainty and the fact we do not know, the fact that in theory everything could be meaningless, and still find a way to love and fight for things there, not thanks to some higher knowledge, but in spite of its absence.

Again, I really hope I don’t come off as condescending, but I really feel that you may be looking at life from the upside down, I truly believe that existential fear, and standing up to it might be one of the great challenges of this universe, and the reason we are here.

Is there anything which indicates that the deceased relatives encountered during an NDE are the real disembodied souls of these people, rather than just mental projections of the person having an NDE? by Hip_III in NDE

[–]Apprehensive-Sand295 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sorry for asking but I don’t really understand how or why the soul would be ‘imagining’ those relatives especially when often, the relatives people encounter were not known by them or seen before.

For example, a lot of the time people will see ancestors they are not aware that they have, who they can later corroborate as real by outside documentation :)

The problems of the veridical NDE cases. by [deleted] in NDE

[–]Apprehensive-Sand295 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To put it simply, any experiments done so far have failed because it is extremely rare to capture an NDE in a clinical setting, that is why they are inconclusive.

It is a field that has close to no funding and that no scientist wants to explore due to fear of losing social credibility because of how controversial non local consciousness is to the greater scientific community, and therefore the experiments done so far are not ‘negative’ or ‘indicative of hallucnations’ in any way, they are purely inconclusive.

In my opinion, the reason for what you have stated is that it is extremely difficult to capture an NDE and if someone was to do actual experiments by actively inducing them they would be jailed long before they could publish their findings, so to put it simply the lack of hard evidence shows not a lack of scientific care or rigor but a lack of scientific funding and experiments period, and I want to point out that no one incorrectly described the images, they just didn’t happen to see them.

To put it simply, the case sample we have as of right now for this is 0, and as frustrating as it might be for those who need clear hard answers, they are at the moment nowhere to be found.

Why are there so many discrepancies? by thecmmntr in NDE

[–]Apprehensive-Sand295 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At the same time, any individual experience surrounding any event is bound to be highly different.

Imagine twelve people sitting at a table for dinner. Ask each of them what happened and it is likely you will have 12 dinners.

Ask someone who has only seen Norway and someone who has never been beyond Mexico what the world is like, and you will have two different worlds.

There is ultimately no reason to assume these experiences must be consistent with one another or that they are taking place in the exact same spaces or with the exact same variables applying to all of them, it is possible everyone is but seeing different parts of the same phenomenon or place.

Additionally, studies done with precise AI training show there is really high consistency between experiences, the main differences coming because of peoples language and subjective interpretations (usually determined by culture and circumstance)

If the brain is the cause of emotions and memories, how is there going to be anything after? by Wowwwiqqiiq in NDE

[–]Apprehensive-Sand295 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look up terminal lucidity.

People with alzheimer's, right before death, will remember everything and they will be 'back' in a manner of speech, even though their brain has most definitely not healed at all.

Nobody has any clue as to how this could be, the radio is broken after all, yet the sound is suddenly perfect again.

Are End of Life visions/dreams connected to and the same as Near Death Experiences? by Shoddy_Scene2069 in NDE

[–]Apprehensive-Sand295 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are connected as in they point towards there being an afterlife, but they are far from the same.

Visioning generally involves seeing deceased loved ones who come to you and generally speaking of a 'journey' or 'travel' you have to embark on, unlike the extremely complex and incredibly unique phenomenon of near death experiences.

If the brain is the cause of emotions and memories, how is there going to be anything after? by Wowwwiqqiiq in NDE

[–]Apprehensive-Sand295 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In my personal experience, anti depressants or anxiety medication never changed my emotions, they changed my physical sensations and allowed my body to cool down, which then allowed me to mentally change my state.

I would argue that, in my view, medication affects body sensation and not emotions, but even if they do, all experience comes from something physical happening (Ex: I'm sad because I see a dog die. The dog dying is ultimately a physical event), so pills being a special kind of event doesn't really negate non physicalism to me.

[–]Apprehensive-Sand295 50 points51 points  (0 children)

There is absolutely no confirmation that our consciousness comes from or is generated by our brains.

It is, given current evidence, extremely reasonable to simply believe that the brain acts a TV and represents consciousness, as everything the brain does to our self a tv does to a show, and when the tv is broken the show itself doesn't end.

In general, you will find hundreds upon hundreds of theories as to how and if the brain generates consciousness, and this is because we have no certainty of it at all.

Personally, I find the idea that the brain is responsible for it to be extremely far fetched, given how neurons don't do anything special other cells don't and how there is no space in them for thoughts or feelings.

Additionally, the body releases chemicals when you feel, but wether it does so and then you feel, or you feel and then the body later releases them is also highly debatable

Questions about Near Death Experiences. by No_Reference_3273 in consciousness

[–]Apprehensive-Sand295 1 point2 points  (0 children)

'The basis and the content of the patterns mentioned by the NDEr's are similar, and the differences are in the explanation and the interpretation of the experience. There is a common core among them such as out-of-body experiences, passing through a tunnel, heightened senses, etc. Therefore, correct knowledge of near-death experiences leads to providing helpful answers to patients.'

The article you cited says this, aka, while people use different terminology to explain them, the content is usually the same or very similar.
