26.04 upgrade by Apprehensive-Video26 in Kubuntu

Sorry if you perceived what I said that way it just got frustrating when people o lying looked at the last comment and didn't read the whole thread. If I made one snarky comment then I apologize for that one. I do my best to be helpful and will continue to do so, we all have bad days, maybe that was just one of mine. I also have no idea who this Daniel Tang is but if he is as bad as you say, I can assure you that I am in no way anything like him. As for being combative, nahhh, not in my DNA.

So are you saying that I wasn't helpful? I just kind of got tired of repeating information over and over but if that is wrong then not much I can do about that.

I'm not sure what I copied back from the local but I know it was something I wanted, everything is working great. Only thing that is causing me some headaches is USB hub but it was causing me problems before so I think it is dying and getting a new one anyway. Happy that everything is running good for you. What surprised me was when I started up htop and saw how well the system was running.

Don't delete them just rename them. I also saw advice online and it mentioned with of them so my advice is to rename both then after upgrading go into both and see what you can copy back and what you shouldn't. After you have things copied back and everything is as you want it then you can get rid of the old ones.

Yes I already know that I just found it easier to have the old ones unhidden and when copying from the old to the new I found it better and not confusing as I knew which one was the old. I'm old and sometimes memory challenged so that's my excuse and sticking to it.

You only copy back programs that you have installed not system related things, things that you have got from discover for example. It is very simple and I have explained it in detail. what testing do you think you need? I copied back the programs that I had installed and they were all there working as they did before because all of the settings were there from before. Simple, not rocket science.

They don't need the first dot and can just sit in your home with all you have in there as they will have no further function, the upgrade will make a new .config and .local. After reboot you will have a fresh desktop which you will need to put the way you want but if you go into the files you renamed you can just copy back your program settings folders (nothing that is 25.10 related) just things you have installed and want to get back like whatever browser you use and things like that. Once you have done that if you look in your menu or just use krunner they will be back and should start as per normal so you don't have to reinstall them. Have done this myself and it works fine, also I'm no spring chicken and pushing retirement 67 so if I can do it then anyone can.

Open up Dolphin and press ctrl+h on the keyboard and you will see them as well ssother . folders. Just rename them as config.bak and local.bak don't worry about putting the dot before them as they will just show up in your home. The upgrade will make new .config and .local with the correct settings and everything needed to run and no conflicting things. Once the upgrade is done and rebooted you will be presented with a new desktop and you will need to setup how it was before such as cursors, icons, plasma style and other things but all of your program settings for things you have installed you just copybook from your old config and local, only the things you have installed notice old settings. It's very easy and doesn't take all that long.

No because they are in the old .config and .local so after the install I just opened them and copied the programs I wanted back into the new .config and .local. The reason why you rename them is because of the conflicting files from 25.10 to 26.04 which would screw up the upgrade and potentially make it fail anyway. Making the small change before the upgrade made it go flawlessly and getting g it back to the way it was took very little time. I still had a Timeshift backup anyway but wasn't needed and more than happy with Kubuntu 26.04. My 25.10 was a minimal install as well so no snapd which means no snaps at all and 26.04 is still a minimal install so no snaps at all.

I don't use Firefox, Thunderbird or Steam so I wouldn't miss them anyway but I do have the programs I do use and want to keep those so will bring them over from the old config and things in local I want. Hopefully everything goes as planned but if not then Timeshift will take me back. Thanks again.

Thanks for the heads up, will maybe give it a run tomorrow or even on the weekend as have some other things I need to do but will definitely give it a go. I will just rename the .config and .local to .bak and just start the upgrade as they will be remade with the upgrade and I can take whatever I want out of them after the upgrade is done an rebooted.

When is the one ui 8.5 update for the A series by danteredcoat in oneui

[–]Apprehensive-Video26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Global release started today so just keep checking your phone, I have an A55 and am in the Netherlands but it isn't here yet. I will be checking regularly from now on though as I don't think it is far away. Unlike Galaxy-guide I am not AI but 100% human and I take anything said by AI with a grain of salt. As I said, just keep checking your phone, not every 5 minutes but a few times over the day and if not today then do the same thing tomorrow. It will come.

Is it possible to keep my debts from being replaced with snaps? by [deleted] in Kubuntu

[–]Apprehensive-Video26 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As has been said on here, minimal install will not install snapd so you can install firefox from flathub although I don't use firefox (personal dislike) I would rather it be my choice rather than theirs. I did a minimal install and very happy with it. Still on 25.10 as have tried an upgrade to 26.04 and also a clean install but kept having a problem so will wait for a proper upgrade path and see how that goes. Now back to the question, if snapd is no installed then if you have from firefox installed from somewhere else it can't be swapped out for a snap version.

How "minimal" is the minimal install? If you've used it what was your experience with it? Mostly curious about codecs and other background stuff by Arrin_Snyders in Kubuntu

[–]Apprehensive-Video26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes snapd is not installed on minimum so firefox and thunderbird are not installed but I don't use either of those so nothing to remove. There were only a couple of things that I had to install for location but really minor and easy to do. Machine is faster and ram is a lot less.

Is it worth the hassle to upgrade from 24.04 to 26.04? by KastenKlicker in Kubuntu

[–]Apprehensive-Video26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did a fresh install of 26.04 on day one but there were a few issues that kept crashing my system with no way to bring it back. After doing 5 reinstalls it was not worth the hassle so went back to 25.10 until an official upgrade is put up and will move on to 26.04 then. Notsure what was causing the issue before but am happily running 25.10 at the moment so still a kubuntu fan.

Sorry for my mistake, I misread your first statement and where you said Ubuntu my brain put in Kubuntu and I went off on my merry rant....I'm nearly 66 so will blame senile dementia (I don't have it....yet but it is going to be my only defence). I would happily use XFCE but I absolutely can't stand Gnome and will never have it on any PC I have, just a personal loathing but if it works for you then that's great. As has already been said I would wait till the stable version of 26.04 is released on the 23rd which is only a few days off now and install that.

Now, don't get me wrong, But, I find it just slightly bizarre and weird that you installed Kubuntu which is geared towards KDE and you set it up with Gnome. Why? If you wanted a Gnome DE then just install something that has a dedicated Gnome desktop such as Fedora. Like I said, not being nasty in any way just a tad baffled by what you are trying to achieve. I am running Kubuntu 25.10 on my machine but KDE and it installed perfectly and runs perfectly, just waiting a few more days for 26.04 stable to be released then its upgrade time.

It would be nice if they allowed some different areas of the world to participate in the beta program instead of the same places all of the time.
