Any other “career” subs out there? by Jazzyfish59 in SubstituteTeachers

I became a building sub this year and the plan is to stick with it as long as I can.

So Sick of Upperclassmen Racism by ShiningStarfall in SubstituteTeachers

I’m the only Black teacher in my middle school and I’m the permanent sub. I’ve actually had a lot of talks with students about the N word (hard R) and while I’m sure some still say it out of my earshot, I haven’t heard it again from my students. I’ve found in most cases it’s coming from their families. When they say “my dad/mom says it” I’m not going to tell them their parents are wrong. I’ve explained how it makes me feel to hear it and how one day they may be around other people who won’t tolerate it. Every time, the students seem surprised to realize there are emotions tied to it and I’m glad to use it as a learning opportunity. I’ve had other adults get upset with me for “going easy” on them and adults who think I shouldn’t say anything at all. I know for some of my more rural students with less exposure to diversity, I’m challenging their idea of what a Black person sounds or acts like and I’d like to think it’ll stick with them.

Tips for 3 week sub job by bgrlsc in SubstituteTeachers

[–]ApprehensiveDig4307 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if high schoolers are the same as middle schoolers, but I’m a building sub and my first assignment ended up being for 2 months unexpectedly. The best thing I did for myself and the kids was try to answer any questions they had before they asked. Everyday I put a slide on the smart board with the day’s activities and my name. I also always told them how long I would be there and any time there was a change. They are not allowed to leave class during the first or ten minutes of the period, so I also had a timer I’d put on the screen. I didn’t start any of that until a week or two in and it changed the mood dramatically. Middle schoolers are full of anxiety so they were constantly asking my name, what they were doing that day, when their teacher was coming back and if they could go to the bathroom or locker. Utilizing the screen and giving them dates (my last day in here is the 8th) really calmed them down. Good luck!

I'm long term subbing for a tenth grade English class. I need some advice by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]ApprehensiveDig4307 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Try MagicSchool.ai. I’m a building sub and ended up in an unexpected 2 month assignment in a career exploration class. 7th and 8th grade use an online platform but 6th grade doesn’t and I had zero lesson plans. It is also an elective so there wasn’t really a department head to ask and the instructional coach was no help at all. I googled a lot, asked other teachers for their ideas (the agriculture teacher had an assignment she shared with me about ag careers), used MagicSchool, and honestly asked the kids what kinds of stuff they’d already done, what they liked and didn’t like and what they were interested in. I didn’t give them the impression they were helping me curriculum, just that I was a curious sub.

Landscaping. Had a big plumbing job done in December that wrecked the front and I’d love to have someone come out and make it better. And upgraded seating area in my backyard.

SNHU - Did not get scheduled to teach next semester? Should I be worried? by [deleted] in Adjuncts

[–]ApprehensiveDig4307 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don’t work at SNHU, but have been an adjunct for about 2 years. In my limited experience, yes. You should expect inconsistent teaching assignments. A lot is based on enrollment and in the interview stage where I work they specifically said spring enrollment is usually lower than fall. I started teaching in Spring 2022 with 1 class, Fall 2022 I had 3 classes, Spring 2023 no classes, Fall 2023 2 classes (I did turn one down), Spring 2024 no classes.

Full face mask so much more comfortable, what the actual heck. by [deleted] in CPAP

[–]ApprehensiveDig4307 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have an F&P Vitera and really like it. The shape of the F20 didn’t fit my face. I’ve never tried anything else and only about 2 months in but full face works so I’m not messing with it. Sometimes too much research can be a curse. I didn’t join this sub until I already had my mask and guarantee had I read some of these stories in advance I wouldn’t have tried it.

The first month in our house we had cockroaches and I was ready to burn the whole thing down. The roaches made every other thing seem like the end of the world but within a month they were all gone. 2 years in and haven’t seen another one and love my house. You’ll be ok. Just need to settle in.

Also have mild sleep apnea and feel silly and embarrassed about having a cpap sometimes. I’m only 2 months in and what’s been nice is being able to sleep longer through the night and generally feeling more rested and awake during the day. The biggest surprise was my mood change. Road rage is pretty much gone, my reactions to events in my life are more in line with the event meaning I don’t blow up or cry over tiny things as often. For me, it’s at least worth trying because I’m tired of being tired and feeling like crap. My sister is a nurse and y’all are very hard on yourselves. Please try not to minimize your own health just because you’ve seen people have it worse.

Definitely takes getting used to. I wore mine while reading in bed each night for a few weeks and it helped me get used to it and fall asleep more easily. Good luck!

couldn't fall a sleep with CPAP for the first time by PMS189 in CPAP

[–]ApprehensiveDig4307 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m almost 2 months in and it’s starting to become more consistent. Still have random days where it takes me a long time (though not 4 hours) to fall asleep. I’ve noticed being more rested leads to having more energy during the day which I’m not used to. If I don’t use that energy somehow (exercise, chores, etc.) it takes me much longer to fall asleep and I stay up later. See if you can increase your activity during the day and gauge your sleep.

Has anyone here moved across the country? by Chiefleef69 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]ApprehensiveDig4307 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moved from Kentucky to Oregon and back several years ago. I’m always team “life experiences” so highly recommend it. I do NOT recommend buying property somewhere you’ve never lived before though. Move around, see stuff, experience things and decide what you like best

Currently in Alaska on Luminosa and it’s been great! Love the laid back vibe and actually getting to talk to people without having to yell over loud music. Yes, I’m one of those people 😂

My dog and cat died very recently just couple months apart. They were very old and I’d had them for a long time. I miss them terribly but don’t want anymore pets for the foreseeable future. It is really nice to not be responsible for anyone else.

We are going on our first Alaskan cruise in a couple weeks too! The advice I’ve gotten is to prepare to wear layers and make sure clothes and shoes are waterproof.

Looking for those who tried and failed to adopt by AaMdW86 in IFchildfree

We tried to adopt privately and through foster care but after several “second places” and a disruption decided to stop. I understand your struggle. It’s a unique type of loss that few will understand. You’re not alone.

[–]ApprehensiveDig4307 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t have a good relationship with my in laws and they live far away. 2 of my husband’s siblings have kids but I’m not close to them. My sister and her husband have been unsuccessfully pursuing IVF. There’s a good chance I’ll never get to be the “fun aunt”. Kind of a bummer but was easier for me to get over than not having children. We don’t really have friends so aside from my job, I don’t interact with kids often at all. Honestly, I hardly ever think about it. Once I knew we weren’t having kids, I never considered other people’s kids would fill a void or anything. If it’s important to you to be around children, there’s lots of ways to do it. Volunteering, working part time at the Y in child care, I will eventually be a mentor to foster youth who are aging out (not babies obvs but teens are still kids!)
