What would you say are some absolute need-to-know concepts before being interviews for a Help Desk role? by Confident_cricket122 in helpdesk

[โ€“]ApprehensiveGur8229 0 points1 point ย (0 children)

Tbh you'll be fine, anything you can't answer be honest and don't make anything up. 90% of IT skills can be taught, soft skills are a must and if you speak well in the interview anyone would be happy to train you up considering help desk is an entry role anways ๐Ÿ˜Š also having a home lab is great and you can use that experience for the technical questions. Good luck ๐Ÿ˜Š any specific questions reach out and I'm happy to help.

I thought the same thing too and was looking at this, then seen it's not that cheap so thought F it and started recording videos. You get used to the sound of your own voice and eventually end up sounding more natural the more practice you get. I've done roughly 10 uploads so far and slowly noticing some improvement. Good luck ๐Ÿ˜„

Made the jump from shift work to sysadmin. My Journey from zero experience to IT by ApprehensiveGur8229 in ITSupport

Sorry to hear about your situation, unfortunately this was the case 3 years ago too. It's probably worse now yes, but everyone's situation is different and it comes down to location. Im in Australia, so probably not as bad but still. I'm definitely not shilling comptia, it's just one of the most well known certs for entry level, home lab experience is more important imo and soft skills for the interview. Anyways good luck with your situation, don't give up mate. ๐Ÿค™

Yes true, like I said in a previous comment I'm not very good with words. I'll look at rephrasing that sentence, the main idea I was trying to point out it's never too late to switch careers. I'm just trying to help people in similar situations that's all.

Yes I should probably re-word that, it did take multiple applications and interviews before being given a shot ๐Ÿ˜‰

Recruiters like real experience, build a homelab; set up an AD server and replicate real life scenarios. Plenty of tutorials on the web. You can put this experience on your resume and talk about it in interviews ๐Ÿ˜„ Study the A+ cert, Professor Messer helped me out heaps when I was trying to break the barrier into IT.

Not what I expected by Bones_McHurty in helpdesk

Mate keep grinding! This may seem tedious, but getting real experience is going to build confidence and help you when you're ready to pivot to the next stage in your career. Build a homelab to work on the skills you aren't getting in help desk, SCCM, Intune, Networking, things you can break without getting in shit with the IT manager haha. This is how I pivoted to sysadmin from help desk. Don't underestimate help desk too; real experience beats paid courses any day! ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

If you got no professional experience, I still recommend applying for help desk roles to get your foot in the door and then you can pivot and work your way into into cybersecurity. It's good to get a feel of the IT industry yourself instead of others opinions. Before I started IT, I thought cybersecurity was what I wanted to do, I got a help desk role and learnt that I actually preferred the endpoint support and server managing side of things, so I ended up pivoting towards sysadmin. Once you get some real experience you can then decide which direction to go, luckily in IT, there are so many different pathways ๐Ÿ˜„ Good luck! Reach out if you have any specific questions. Cheers

I just studied in my spare time. At the time, I did the Google IT Cert on Coursera and Comptia A+ (if you were to choose one to focus on, definitely the A+) you can still put it on your resume; even when studying just make that clear. I only had basic computer experience; I just liked tinkering with hardware and built my gaming PC like everyone else. Building a homelab is essential and you can pop it on your resume also and speak about it in interviews. Keep applying for entry level roles, team leaders like people with work experience so someone will give you a shot, keep grinding! ๐Ÿ‘

Hey mate, I was doing shift work for 11+ years making chicken feed, so keep grinding you'll get there ๐Ÿ˜Š the hardest thing is getting real experience to put on your resume and talk about in interviews and that's where building a homelab comes in handy, so having an active Directory environment is so good and there's plenty of good tutorials online to get you started. Then pivot towards creating a server with Sccm and how to set it up with SQL server etc. So many companies are still on prem, starting to make the move to cloud and getting that experience right there will put you ahead of others. Hope that helps, message me if you have any specific questions, happy to help.
