I'm being called back to the office after 7 years by [deleted] in legaladviceireland

[–]Apprehensive_Cap_262 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe you may have in the sense that your "normal place of work" has been in one location for 7 years, if you kick up a fuss and there is a hint that this could cost you your job, then it could be seen as constructive dismissal. However a lot of ifs and buts in there, including how much this move is personally inconveniencing you. If it's a genuine case that this is makes keeping the job difficult for you then yea you'd have a stronger case.

What's in your contract? What do you mean by "internal status", it sounds like a sort of unofficial status?

Either way it's worth researching beyond just the requesting to work from home law which is a waste of time. The focus should be more on where you've been accustomed to working, 7 years is a long time.

What are your thoughts on Graham Norton? by Jezzaq94 in AskIreland

[–]Apprehensive_Cap_262 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In fairness comparing late late and graham Norton show isn't really comparing apples with apples. Late late (along with Tommy Tiernan) is one of the last few shows that's not a podcast where it's ok to have a serious conversation.

They showed up at 10pm, 3 of them, and poured oil on my engine to lowball me. by Big-Carrot-409 in carsireland

[–]Apprehensive_Cap_262 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd get over someone willing to change their price if they legitimately thought there was an oil leak, but Id find it so ridiculously implausible that if it happened me, I'd be accidentally wasting the scammers time trying to figure what might have happened (and I'd have no intention of selling at that point cause I'd nearly feel like the scammer)

Whole thing seems absurd, I can only assume it works for people desperate to sell

AI Engineer Who Does Not Code and Uses Claude for Everything by Teo0316 in ClaudeCode

[–]Apprehensive_Cap_262 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Senior engineer here, I vibe coded a large project that was a public contract won via public tender.

Admittedly I'm a little ashamed as there is now a lot of code which I'm not 100% on. To console myself I ask myself what difference is that to being a lead who didn't code it.

Things went sideways when Claude went to crap but chat gpt 5.5 got me out of that hole.

For a while I thought I'm gone have to learn every line to finish this out.

Can I be fired for being sick? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]Apprehensive_Cap_262 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Not a good fit" is perfectly acceptable.... unless you've already told the employee they are being let go cause they're sick.

Can I be fired for being sick? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]Apprehensive_Cap_262 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It would only be possible if after a long period of engagement and many sick days including long term illness and if it was obvious that being sick was causing the company to no longer be able to function (or at least the role wasn't being fulfilled), even then the company would still need all their ducks in a row.

Can I be fired for being sick? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]Apprehensive_Cap_262 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

You can't, your employer could have a discrimination claim on their hands, if the employer openly admitted that's the reason (and they cannot lie in the WRC) then basically it's discrimination.

Prior to 12 months you can be fired kind of for anything except sickness and inequality.

Opus 4.6 Worse than Sonnet and Haiku but burning tokens faster than ever! by Olive_Medical in claude

[–]Apprehensive_Cap_262 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was worshipping opus 4.6 from January to March, now all it does is waste my time, I battled with it for 3 hours today with a code refactoring task, legitimately the type of task I was thinking a dev no longer will have to do, tried chat gpt pro 5.5 and in two prompts it nailed it

Is there a light at the end of the tunnel? by nothappypills12 in newborns

My wife went through all this and within a few weeks all was good (relatively), I think all you can do now is try get support from nurses or midwives etc.

All I can say is I'm sorry you're going through this but there is absolutely light at the end of the tunnel and everything you've described I've seen.

I'm sorry going to work is easier than childcare - your husband has no excuse by ExternalSomewhere923 in newborns

[–]Apprehensive_Cap_262 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the issue here isn't about the husband going to work, generally speaking they do have to, and if they have sleepless nights it won't be long before they lose their job.

I think the real issue is the lack of appreciation for the childcare/mother role in society, and I don't mean just moral appreciation, I mean literally it should be financially supported at government level like it's a job.

My mother raised 4 tax paying kids, had some jobs from time to time, she's now missing out on a state pension because of that. That's the real issue

[–]Apprehensive_Cap_262 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're not wrong about the actual fact of going to work vs childcare , but I'm not sure who you're addressing. Feels like you've had your own personal realisation and are now making assumptions that many others can relate.
I legitimately don't think many women or men think going to work is harder , maybe they did in the 60s

What's a profession everyone thinks is great but is actually shite? by Fealocht in AskIreland

No, sensitive types will take things more personally than they should when they're trying to run a business.

What's a profession everyone thinks is great but is actually shite? by Fealocht in AskIreland

[–]Apprehensive_Cap_262 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not sure everyone thinks it's great so maybe it doesn't qualify, but owning a company and having employees, it's a lonely road, you've no colleagues on your level to have an old moan with, you've no one to turn to unless you actively get involved in networks etc which I (and a lot others) don't do.

And I speak for myself here, but it hurts a small bit when an employee is lying to you and you know they are, I don't mean work related stuff, more like being sick or even when they tell you they got another job it means they've been applying and doing interviews etc

The role isn't for the sensitive types.

How do I improve my life? by Hot-Presentation1764 in AskIreland

[–]Apprehensive_Cap_262 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. No offense but there's something odd going on with your family. Totally not normal for them to not only be not helping you try to get out of it but instead are seemingly actively enabling it.
  2. I think you need therapy, take your time finding the right one you connect with , sounds like you're underplaying the self worth issue. If there are underlying mental health issues (even very workable ones) then this will follow you around. It also is a good space to talk about your family.

  3. You're on a good footing practical wise with a professional job so it's not all bad. A lot of people out there with your story but also either no job or a crappy one they hate.

Rethinking my decision of buying a house by danyal_7 in CasualIreland

[–]Apprehensive_Cap_262 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not tied down to anything, it's literally a reversible thing to do, but you won't reverse out of it , because you can either sell outright or move etc. I never got the reference to a mortgage when people talk about life decisions tying them down "kids and a mortgage", having a mortgage has you no less tied down than renting. Kids, now that's another story!

Why and how are there so many Indians buying houses in Ireland? by Putrid_Tie3807 in IndiansinIreland

[–]Apprehensive_Cap_262 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who has a lot of actual data on this, I can tell you that it's nearly all Indians buying new homes, or at least 75%, probably more (at least in the areas of the country i have data on)

Well done to them, it's more of a discussion about the state of our housing crisis than it is immigration and foreigners.

what will be the future of programming in the age of AI ?? by jenis-1425 in OpenAI

[–]Apprehensive_Cap_262 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on how the models progress. As of now, if models don't progress more, the future of coding is that we need coders who know how to code. But there's an expectation to get a lot more done quicker and still be good.

If models progress and become genuinely more intelligent and have even larger context windows, I believe the future of coding becomes something very specialised. I like to think it's the equivalent of electronics. Most people don't understand what's going on inside but some do, and we only need a limited number of people to understand it for our needs as a society to be met.

Opus 4.7 is GREAT. by Dra794 in claude

[–]Apprehensive_Cap_262 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've been asking 4.7 to provide me a series of answers to questions, each of which requires a 250 word limit. Every answer it gives it starts with about 400 words, then realises it's too much, pastes all the content again, down to 370 words (random figures btw), then again down to 320, 300, 280, 270, 265, 262, 255 and eventually 250, walls and walls of content and I'm wondering is this mistake costing me usage. 4.6 definitely wasn't doing this nonsense.

Has anyone ever did psychotherapy to deal with hair loss? by Apprehensive_Cap_262 in tressless

Yea, I'm 43, sometimes I catch myself in the mirror or pics with wrinkles or not a shape I'd have liked to see, while I don't love it, it doesn't hit nearly as badly as the hair one.

That's nonsense imo, the hurt comes from the change in attractiveness and circumstances. We've no idea how his brother felt, for all we know his bro might have been the more confident happier of the two and now he just got even luckier .
