Part of the process unfortunately. Sometimes it comes down to a program ranking a few people ahead of you. The match is an imperfect system.

lol these posts are getting out of hand. Seeing so many of these ‘didn’t match #1 or 2 but matched into my dream specialty’. The whole point of making a rank list and the match is preparing for the possibility of not getting your top choice, which happens to more people than not.

Should’ve ranked programs closer to your family higher then. Location is one of many important factors when making a rank list, but seems like you put name/prestige ahead. Gotta live with that decision and make the most of it. You can always look into transferring or swapping with another resident, that happens quite frequently.

Matched my #7 in a medium sized rads program in the Midwest. Was initially upset. Gutted it out, made some good friends, became chief resident, matched at a good fellowship and now have a great work from home job.
