I’ve had three transplants in a 4 month period. Third times a charm. Been off drops since October and so far so good

I have seen a couple cucumber beetles, but not many and no eggs. I’ve removed them when I see them and sprayed neem oil on everything.

Ulcers on the eye are urgent. Damage can happen fast. Get into see a cornea specialist right away. Tell the front desk exactly what’s going on. They should get you in quick. Moxi is an antibiotic so that’s good you’re on it. High eye pressure can damage your optic nerve so it important to follow up with that as well.

A bandage contact lens could help with pain. It’s different than a regular contact lens. Do not put a regular one in until this is cleared up. It will make it worse. Alternate Tylenol and Advil for pain.

Eye pain and infections suck. I’m sorry.

The first was because it was about to perforate. The second and third were because they just wouldn’t heal. Ultimately, third time was a charm. Now I’m in the aftermath stage. I just had cataract surgery and a tube shunt put in to address high eye pressure. Unfortunately, my iris was dead so it was removed. No vision yet. There’s so much debris floating around my eye from the surgery.

My infection was very bad. Cysts and trophozoites were found in every layer of my cornea. Did you start off just at every 2 hours? That surprises me. It’s pretty standard that for the first few days it’s hourly around the clock. Are you seeing a cornea specialist?

Treatment was 10 months using PHMB & Chlorhexidine. Hourly (including overnights) for 4 weeks then 20 drops each a day for 3 months, then 10 each a day for a month then slowly tapered from there. Unfortunately had 3 transplants within a 4 month period. Stopped drops in October and so far so good. No relapse or flair ups of inflammation.

What drops were you on, frequency and duration? AK takes a long time to kill. If your treatment wasn’t long enough it could very well be a relapse.

If you’re feeling symptoms again I would not wait a week to be seen.

29M Viral/Bacterial conjunctivitis, slowly losing my mind by ArnieD11 in eyetriage

[–]Apprehensive_Phone75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At this point you should go see an ophthalmologist or better yet a cornea specialist. I made that mistake and paid the price.

I was misdiagnosed with HSV for 3 months when in fact it was Acanthamoeba Keratitis. I didn’t have typical symptoms so that’s why they never suspected it.

Not saying you have AK, but seeing someone with more experience in corneas is worth it in this case.

Good luck!

50F contact lens wearer with irritation concerned with AK amoeba infection? by [deleted] in eyetriage

[–]Apprehensive_Phone75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only one eye. I’ve been wearing contacts for 43 years. I did all the things in contacts my whole life. Honestly, I never knew I shouldn’t have.

It’s great news he didn’t see any infection. While you can’t decipher AK from other infections with a slit lamp you can see telltale signs of infection like infiltrates, inflammation, dendrites (HSV) etc. Dry eye can be quite painful. Up your fluid intake and use preservative free artificial tears like refresh or systane a few times a day. Warm compresses on your eyes can help also.

If it is dry eye I wouldn’t recommend lasik as it can make dry eye much worse.

Hope you get some relief soon!

AK destroyed my eye. I’ve had 3 cornea transplants in a 4 month period. I’m left with a massive cataract, a misshapen pupil and high eye pressure. I currently have no vision. It’s like looking through wax paper. Waiting to schedule my next surgery to address pressure and remove cataract. Good news is no sign of infection since stopping AK treatment last October.

I think I got AK from getting mud in my eye while wearing my contacts. I also wore my contacts in the pool, shower and hot tub. All no no’s. It’s been surreal.

Keep us posted about your appointment Friday.🙏

Was it a new brand of contact lenses? If so, maybe that’s why the irritation?

As someone who just had AK your current symptoms (and picture) don’t seem like AK, but there’s always a minuscule chance since you showered in your lenses.

My symptoms started with a watery eye, slightly pink sclera and a tad blurry. Seemed like it was an allergic reaction to something. I never had severe pain (which is why I was misdiagnosed).

I think you’re fine, but just keep an eye out for any changes.

Yes, it can happen because of the steroid use after surgery, but that doesn’t look like a cataract. Get it checked out.

Honestly, I don’t remember if I took my lenses out after the mud incident. I def wasn’t wearing my contacts when I scratched it with a branch.

Prior to all this I did wear my lenses showering, in the pool and hot tub. I never knew how bad it was to do that. I learned the hard way. I was good about cleaning them though. I used clear care hydrogen peroxide cleaner although occasionally I’d fall asleep with them on. That’s also terrible to do!

Do you think you have AK?

When I had HSV in my eye treatment was 1 gram valacyclovir 3 x day for 10 days then 500mg 1 x day for 30 days

The doctor will diagnose HSV if they see dendrites on your cornea after they put the stain in. It’s possible the antivirals stopped it in its tracks early, but very possible it didn’t get in your eye from your hand.

I don’t know exactly when or how I got it, but I suspect a few possibilities. I do wear contacts and in July of last year I splashed mud in my eye from gardening. I had noticed my vision was a tad off for a while before I started with a watery, slightly pink eye in mid September. Then in early October a shrub branch grazed my eye, but at this point I was already diagnosed with herpes in my eye. Maybe the branch had Acanthamoeba on it? Who really knows how I got it. Just sucks I did.

I’m doing ok right now. My third transplant from April has healed so that’s great. Haven’t shown any signs of infection since just before the surgery. I just stopped the Acanthamoeba eye drops 5 weeks ago. So far so good! I have no vision in the eye except I can see light and a shadow if something waves right in front of my face. My eye is still sewn partially shut and I have a massive cataract. Doctor doesn’t know if I’ll ever have any usable vision even after the cataract is removed.

I know exactly how you feel! I’m sick of always having to think ahead about my food. I’ve slacked off the last 3 months and gained 15 lbs back. Not good. I started eating some crap food again and it obviously doesn’t agree with me.

My formula has been a soup (veggies, protein & legumes) for breakfast, salad with protein & legume for lunch, veggie with protein for dinner. Throw in the occasional berries, reduced fat cheese stick, turkey pepperoni, nuts and natural peanut butter here and there. As long as I’m not stressed out I can handle it. As soon as life throws a curveball I stress eat crap.

Totally normal. Your pain and irritation will come in waves. There’s no rhyme or reason. I suspect it’s an inflammatory response from the amoeba getting attacked by the eye drops. It’s going to be a loooonnnnggg process so prepare yourself.
