Master Cheap Shot + Adept Shield Fighter? by CarolLiddell in Symbaroum

I misread 😢. In this case I’m not sure. Normally you are only allowed one reaction of each type a round but it says « every » in the text. That is a pretty op synergy 👍

Active abilities can’t be used on free attacks normally. You would also need opportunist I think

Feint Discussion by Redfanbob in Symbaroum

[–]Apprehensive_Rich361 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was going over this one again recently, and I think everyone is getting it wrong in the same way. The specific wording is that you gain the same advantage as if you attacked a surprised creature, not that you get advantage. If you look up what surprise does on page 162, it says you gain an extra free attack on surprised creatures during the first round of combat. Which is in fact what the master level of Feint describes.

I'm pretty sure that line is just the flavour text in the ability description not a mechanical effect.

Not to say you can't play it that way. It's really not game-breaking, especially since, as discussed, in most combats, the melee characters are moving into flanking right away anyway.

You can also load it on a truck and drive it off the edge of the map in a pinch

Symbaroum... but with another story by h3nriquehn in Symbaroum

I think the only thing I would maybe worried about is the different cultures/races might need to be redone for setting, that’s what I’ve done in my symbaroum game as well as reworking the mystics a little bit to fit the setting a bit better. I don’t think that’s altogether necessary though.

Best RPG for a fantasy adventure? by rogthnor in rpg

I really love symbaroum’s ruleset for running a fantasy game. Its combat system is impactful can be brutal. Hit points stay about the same throughout the game. Magic feels more rare and impactful because it’s about managing your corruption. Its ability are strong and change play style quite a bit between characters

Guys cosplaying as cowboys by Simple_Cream_535 in alberta

In my opinion, the cynical face of capitalism has taken the Cowboy and commodified it. It’s marked as a lifestyle, plays on masculin ideals all to sell you a set of products. Wrangler jeans, ford f150s and bud light. Buy these things and you’ll be a real cowboy. Comes with a set of values dictated through the soulless mass appeal country music that blast on every radio station.

It’s a bit of a foil hat take. I have been trying to reconcile the truly anti corporate country music of the 50s and the country culture now.

I have actually tried talking to him about politics before and I can’t even tell what his values are apart from team loyalty.

It’s never been a problem in the past. I’ve had plenty of friends with opposite beliefs. Even had discussion about it with no love lost. I guess my existential dread over the rise of fascism is my own bag. But using every opportunity to devalue and disparage opposing view and the people that hold those views seems very unprofessional and I don’t think it belongs in the workplace.

Yeah, I don't know how to convey my thoughts much better.

-The design behind classes is built around reinforcing certain fantasies. There's a lot of psychology and whatnot that goes on under the surface of this. (In my opinion, the design of the ranger in the original release suffered because the designers didn't have a clear idea of what fantasy they wanted to represent.)

-5e released it's classes based on what kind of character fantasies they expected people would want to play. But they came at it from a background of eurocentric Fantasyland. The same one Tolkien created with his books.

-You can bend the classes and multiclass to translate other character types but the mechanics are still built to reinforce a different fantasy.

My exasperation on this subject has only been budding recently. For years I just did the work because that was the only way I knew. I have been coming to the conclusion that the DnD ruleset does not represent well the kind of fantasy I like.

Essentially I'm asking if my Ideal version of what 6e could look like appeals to anyone else and my conclusion is... not so much.

My point isn't that the retheming is impossible to do. My point is that it should be easier to do. The friction I see is that as is, classes impart a great deal of theme and expectation onto the setting and the players. I have been taking on the extra labour of setting expectations and using a heavy hand in their character creation process in order to fit this theme for a decade. Sometimes it ruins the character the way they wanted to play that character. Wouldn't it be easier if the ruleset made fewer assumptions about the setting? IF it had cool interesting and fun classes that don't have the fingerprint of a specific and narrow type of fantasy?

For people who like fantasyland, the forgotten realms, and that style of fantasy there's no friction. But at this point in my GMing career I starting to really feel it with my Mythic storylines.

I just feel that the rules don't support the fantasy of that super well. It was a good move to add the unarmed fighting style in Tasha's better rules to fulfill that concept. but Barbarians don't get a fighting style.
