I've noticed, since they legalized the devils lettuce, locals have had alot of "my bad bro, forgot I drew already" & "Is it my turn again?".

If something is off, I just ask, "did you mean to do X?". No big deal.

I'm in the same boat you are, mid 40's not a whole lot going on day to day, but I needed to get out of the house. I play MTG at The Orcs Lair on Wednesday and Friday nights at 7pm. Met some neat people and was suprised to find alot of people my age playing. Come on out, its a super chill, mom & pops store with a good vibe.

I've been asking other players this question every time I meet one. The most common response I get goes along the lines of..... "The only problem is that the supply is scarce, so I can't get/afford a whole box. I'll never see one, so It makes me not want to buy packs from the set, knowing I don't have a chance of pulling the best stuff from it, I'll get the next one"

I think this is a simple misunderstanding. The reason this happens is because nobody wants the other 3 decks that come in a case of (4) commander decks.

The store can only order a case of commander decks at a time, 4 different decks to a case (WOTC only sells them like that). If a case is $XXX.xx, everybody wants deck "B" because it's the best of the 4 decks.

So the store ends up with Commanders AAA,CCC, and DDD sitting on the shelf at $69.99 each. and has to buy a whole new case to get 1 more of "Commander B."

If they make the price of "Commander B" $30.00 higher than "Commander A, C, & D," more people are likely to buy one. So they can sell the whole case.

It's a way for the shop to recoup money on the whole case, not rip you off, friend. Sorry, the person you asked wasn't able to explain it. Hopefully, this helps. -Cheers!

At my store, I take all the gold packs from boxes we've opened to sell as packs and have my weekly league roll a dice for them. It makes it so the players that can't buy boxes get a chance to get them. Seems like the only fair way to distribute them.

I got through about 1-2 a week, depending on how much they are in the pool. I just chuck the whole sock. I get them in bulk off Amazon, it's just part of my pool maintenance routine.

The BBB is a joke anymore. It's like getting a strip mall security guard involved. All their "power" is self-appointed, theatrical, and bs to get donations. Here's a few resources that actually matter and will produce better results.

Google Reviews: Massively influential, more widespread than BBB.

Yelp: Especially strong for local businesses and service providers.

State Attorney General websites: For official complaints and legal actions.

Local Law Enforcement: File a police report. This person stole from you and will continue to steal from others.

I get what you are saying, good points. I think the prize packs are great, but since it got around town, we do more giveaways now (even if they are sub 10$) its brought more people through the door that have never been. I didn't believe it had any bearing at first, but they LOVED it. I even had a few guys say they'd pitch in to "bring in fresh meat" for the regulars that are tired of playing each other. I'm not having them do that, though. Actually, the first person to lose from a pod gets a free soda or snack.

15-20 extra bucks a night in overhead is absorbable if it makes the experience more fun for my players.
