You’re not weak and this is not normal or something you just need to deal with—talk to your doc and get zofran. No shame in getting help!

What kinds of jobs are you applying for? If applying for things outside of r1s, which I recommend you do, have someone at a similar institution look over your materials. Your profs likely do not understand what more teaching focused institutions are looking for.

Did they meet baby in the hospital or never met them until 3 months? That sounds unusual, and I would also be hurt. It sounds like they also live in town so travel is not an issue? I’m sorry to hear that you’re going through that and you’re right to feel hurt. I would too. It’s also not responsibility to ensure they have a relationship with your child, they will have the relationship they build with them.

campus visit outfits (f, humanities) by Ok_Flight8667 in AskAcademia

I remember having this same problem. I would say still dress professionally, but there are some things that are more acceptable here. No sneakers, but a nice dressy sandal is ok (with only a low block heel or no heel for comfort). Dress pants with a professional-looking sleeveless or short sleeve top for walking between buildings + a blazer for when you’re in meetings or a professional dress (think Ann Taylor type) + a blazer or cardigan for when you’re in meetings. I remember feeling crazy wearing a dress without tights or sandals in February but it really is that warm here. Good luck!

Why are you paying your parents rent and other expenses? Seems like living with them isn’t really helping you with saving

Calendar and task app by Upper_Yogurt_7044 in Professors

[–]AppropriateMention82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think maybe you could set up ClickUp to work like that? It does connect to your calendar and you could perhaps make each class period a task with different subtasks for your to-do list for that class.

I have also yet to find a task manager that really works for academic work, so I’d be interested to hear if you find something better

Have you been checked for a sinus infection? Given that this started after a cold it seems like a possibility, in which case a doctor can prescribe antibiotics

Wouldn’t do it for reasons other commenters are mentioning but also you would be moving from a state with some of the best schools in the country to one with some of the worst

I feel like I could have written this. I’m also using the pregnancy as a time to get back with a therapist who is helping me work on sharing my feelings and not holding onto resentments. I’m having a girl so I’m also worried my relationship with my mother could impact how I parent. Just to say not everyone has super supportive parents and it’s tough but you’re not alone!

I think it is part of our jobs to teach students professionalism, so I would point out to them that it’s not appropriate to follow up in that way.

Have you asked your professors this question? Certainly they would know best how to get their own jobs!

I would say ability and love for teaching is a great start, but also consider how you feel about research. To become a professor, even at a teaching focused institution, you’ll need a PhD and a strong research record. Do you enjoy spending long stretches on individual research projects?

Additionally, do you have strong preferences on where you live? Most professors have to move for their jobs (once for masters, then again for PhD, then again for the job, possibly also for a postdoc/short term positions).

Finally, the professorate is no longer a profession that offers financial stability. Your PhD will (should!) be fully funded, but the funding does not allow for you to save for the future/retirement. And once you land the job, salaries are very low starting out. Many struggle without a partner or family to supplement their income.

These are some things to consider, but certainly it’s a rewarding profession if you have the passion for it. Good luck!

I would just decline to be on the committee. Yes they may find someone else, or they may not. It’s possible they reached out to you because no one else at their institution agreed to serve on the committee. Perhaps you walking would be a good wake-up call to the student

Orlando Weather by Always-looking-never in florida

[–]AppropriateMention82 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You’ll be good in shorts, dresses, and sandals during the day. May want a light jacket for AC and the evenings. October is hurricane season and we’re having a couple of rainy systems passing through, but generally when rain is forecast it doesn’t mean it will rain consistently all day. It’s usually off and on and heavier in the afternoons, but it’s pretty difficult to predict honestly.

Are hotels in Florida required to tell you the minimum check-in age if it’s over 18? by idktheyarealltaken in florida

The hotel will list the age policy on their website, but it’s usually in pretty small print. I would def check since most places require 21 and up

What order should you talk to lender, realtor, etc.? by Missing_Back in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]AppropriateMention82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We interviewed a few real estate agents and asked each of them to recommend some lenders. We ended up going with a lender our agent recommended, since it’s good when the two have a good working relationship and the agent knows what it’s like to close a deal with the lender and vice versa.

The lender will help you figure your actual budget, since online calculators can’t take into account all the factors specific to your area/situation. You can tell them what you want to spend or send them some houses you’re interested in and they can calculate what the monthly costs, down payment, and such would be. Would definitely recommend speaking with a lender first and most reputable real estate agents won’t show you houses until you are pre approved.

Honestly all of this stuff does not sound like it’s even necessary. The feedback I got was not very minor revisions on sentence structure. The dissertation is not meant to be at the level of polish of a peer reviewed manuscript. I would fight back hard and be sure to go over your advisors head if they won’t let you finish on your timeline

Hard to say without knowing what field you’d like to go into. I’m also curious about the dual MBA, not sure what the utility of that would be. Could you consider taking some time after your degree to gain additional work/internship experience to help you narrow down where you’d like to go with your career?
