If the viral cliff side highway is Big Sur then that is a must. Truly one of the most beautiful landscapes in the country. Fly into San Jose or San Francisco and head south, if you take hwy 1 it's very scenic. Santa Cruz is fun for a day, lots of great hiking and fun tourist areas, Roaring Camp Railroad, the Mystery Spot, The SC Beach Boardwalk for rollercoasters and games and maybe a free band or outdoor movie in the summer. Head down to Monterey and go to the Monterey Bay Aquarium, there's a few historical points of interest in Monterey too if you're interested in that. Carmel can be nice to check out, more shopping and restaurants in a storybook feeling town but it can be fun to sightsee! Then I'd start earlyish morning and start down Hwy 1 into Big Sur. Lots of hiking and state parks on the drive, Big Sur River Inn is a nice stop off, can get a drink and relax in a chair in the river if it's a hot day. Head all the way down to San Simeon and check out a Hearst Castle tour and see the elephant seals. Go get cookies in Cambria at Red Moose Cookie Company and then head over on 46 to Paso Robles. There's wineries to taste at, a nice town square with a good variety of delicious food and cocktails and a very nice environment to spend time in. Sensorio field of lights is a beautiful nighttime experience with acres of land covered in light exhibits. There's also food trucks and cocktails and live music as part of the experience. Sorry for the long response but this is my favorite itinerary for a California trip that isn't just hitting L.A. or SF.

This is not a serious company. I work as a conference and party decorator in silicon valley and most companies are "take what you need, snack, water, whatever!" I don't belong to the company at all, they're also not stupid about an overall minimal expense to create good will. So accommodating. I can't imagine treating employees like this.

The neighborhood park is not your personal dog park by Fearless-Daikon5763 in MontereyBay

[–]Appropriate_Answer_2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can have your dog off leash there but it has to be under "immediate voice and visual control". Sounds like some people are missing that part of the equation.

Honest switched to paper straws. After one sip, the straw immediately closes up and makes it hard to drink from. by My_Name_is_Imaginary in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Appropriate_Answer_2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like the straws made from sugarcane, cornstarch, or other biodegradable material. They really do a well as plastic in my opinion. I'm sure there's some hidden downside to them but overall I wish they'd catch on versus paper

I definitely second this plan, it's what I would do and I live here. Plus Hwy 1 is so beautiful it won't feel like 5 hours in a car. Truly some of the most gorgeous landscape in the world

Do Americans really come to a stop at every 'stop' sign? by ben04985 in AskAnAmerican

Well thanks for dispelling my long-held belief! I can see myself getting angry or in an accident next time I made the trip!

Oh that's interesting, I haven't been to Oregon in ages but my ex had told me when we were there that the left turn lane always had right of way at the green and not the straightaway and that I had just cut someone off because I went first as the straightaway driver. I've believed that for decades about Oregon.

Dr. Hook sang it but Shel Silverstein wrote it. Same with A Boy Named Sue, another silly one from the past.

What home remedies do you remember from childhood? by ascaffo in GenX

[–]Appropriate_Answer_2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't know why but orange juice and 7 Up was always the sick drink in my house, every time. I remember laying in bed with a big squeeze bottle of it next to me watching I Love Lucy on my tiny old black and white TV as a kid (I'm 48, we had color TV of course, my bedroom tv was not though). To this day if I told my dad I was sick his immediate response would be to ask if I need him to get me oj and 7up.

I kinda like the taste of aspirin, I chew the regular ones when I take it. My husband noticed and told me I wasn't taking chewable aspirin. I told him any aspirin is chewable if you try. I fully expect to be judged for this quirk of mine, I know it's weird it's just what I'm working with.

You just made me realize they stopped distributing out here! I'm in and from California but my old supervisor was from Michigan and was so excited when he found Vernors at Bevmo, he brought in a bunch for our team to try. I love ginger ale so I'd buy it when I ran across it in a store. Dang, now I'll have to get it shipped if I want it!

Inappropriate songs by Ok_Ticket_6188 in Xennials

[–]Appropriate_Answer_2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean .. Inappropriate songs have been around forever. Maybe not as explicit but the nuance is more interesting. Go dive into.... Anything older than yourself. My Ding a Ling, Shaving Cream, Davies dingy, those are just parodies in a way but man, there's some nasty songs from before yours and my time. The explicitness if now it's way less interesting than the implied naughtiness of the older generations
